A Letter From My Father

My father was such a funny guy. I have several letters he wrote after they retired to Georgia and this has always made me laugh so hard I cry. It was written 11/15/76 one of the first after the move written on 11/15/76. He's gone now, but "Happy Father's Day, Dad".

"Last Wednesday Uncle Gene and I went fishing. Skip was going to go too but we got away too late and he had to take care of Lee while Ann went to class. We went in at one of the three ramps here on the island, none of which are very good and so narrow that you have about 2 inches on each side of the ramp walls. By getting away late we went out when the tide was going down and that is wrong for fishing and we did not do any good.

When we got back to the dock the water was too low to load the boat so we decided to tie it to the pilings until later and come back after it. In the mooring exercise, Uncle Gene (who had consumed a considerable quantity of Irish during the afternoon) fell overboard. I went in after him and got him onto the cement part of the ramp. Now when the tide goes out it leaves a layer of the slickest, slimiest mud on things you ever saw and Uncle Gene proceeded to go down again, taking me with him. He was as wet on the outside as we was on the inside and his hearing aid shorted out from the water plus both his ears being full of water and he could not hear a damned thing I said to him.

He had on his hip boots and they were both full of water which was good for he needed all the ballast he could get. I finally got him to the top of the ramp and got his boots off and finally loaded him in the truck and took him home. You can imagine what a warm reception he got from Aunt Anita.

In about a half hour she called and said Gene had lost his billfold which only had a few dollars in it but had his driverÂs license and credit cards. I told her I had handed it to him when I finally got him in the truck but would go back to the ramp and look for it. Later, Skip and I went back and got the boat on the trailer and we could not find the billfold. They found it the next morning in their own front yard. When we go the next time, it is going to be early in the day (before the bar opens) and he stays in the boat until I have it on dry land."
