Post your seedling pics.... PT-2
Comments (108)Late to the party, but just took pix so figured I'd post. Potted up most of the peppers to individual cells weeks ago, but still have Alma and Tequila Sunrise from Bill multiples per cell. Hope I don't kill them separating them. They're up front on the right (with white envelope in front) - don't they look nice? These won't be transplanted for another 4 weeks at least. But if I can get the tomatoes out of the house this week, I'll have room for individual pots for the peppers. Comments (6)Thanks for the info guys. Ken - I'd love to see what you did but those pics aren't showing up for me. Steve - thanks for the idea, I'll consider it. About the cumaru - although I've never worked with ipe I imagine that the cumaru is more suseceptible to cupping based on what I've seen. All I can say is thank god I face screwed my deck and didn't try the hidden fasteners. I don't have any real problems but there is definatley a tendancy to want to cup. This deck has been taking me a while so it has been exposed (unfinished) to some very hot and dry weather this summer. I was given some "extra" boards with my order. To be honest they shipped me a lot of extra lumber - I think they goofed. The "extra" boards I believe may be ipe. It is definately a different wood than the cumaru. It seems just as hard as the cumaru but more stable - this is the wood I will be using for the post wraps. Not sure how to tell if its ipe or not but when you cut it the saw dust is almost greenish where as the cumaru is reddish. The grain pattern is different also with this wood. The cumaru is more of a crazy intermixed grain pattern, this other wood is more linear grained. If I leave a scrap of cumaru on the lawn overnight it will really cup good, the other wood won't move at all - after a few days it will cup slightly....See MoreScrewing 4x4 Ipe
Comments (15)jtcm - I both glued up 1"X10" garapa plus bought glue ups from East Teak. Both failed in spots. If you are going to do that, make sure the PT is fairly dry. Otherwise, just rip the bullnosed edge off the boards that you will use for facia on the open stringers. In that way, it will not be so obvious that they are deck boards. BTW, on your stair treads, if you have a router, consider putting a bullnose edge (1/2") on all exposed sides. Has a real good look (tip from brooklyn decks)....See MoreInstalling Pergola Posts
Comments (6)I think you also have the option of setting the posts in "Quarry processed" (QP) gravel. This stuff is 1/2" to 3/4" stone with lime. When it "sets up" it is like weak concrete, but it drains water. Of course, it is not as solid as 'crete, so you will have to go down pretty far. If you don't get below the frost line, they might "push up" I have a white cedar fence in QP. (28 posts, 3' down). Last year a bad ice storm pushed a few posts up about 1 inch. But I just tapped them back down with a sledge. No big deal. But maybe John H. has some other experiences / thoughts....See Moreblottfish
