TMJ...anyone have some insight

I have had this for some time but recently it flared up beyond even the dentist's understanding. I have had many x-rays etc. and just recently have had impressions for a dental bite plate. It is very painful and there seems to be no reasoning to it.

I am sure others have it and wonder if anyone could offer some insight into dealing with this.

It can be caused by grinding your teeth when asleep.

One of the things to relieve it....dentists have strips of plastic in varying thicknesses. You start by putting a thick strip between your molars, then grind back & forth...then continue with the next smaller thickness....until it's paper thin. The planned grinding can help....it's like exercising a sore muscle, but gently. And asprin is good.

I'm not sure what you mean by a dental bite plate. My dentist made me a personalized mouth guard and kept adjusting it. I do think it's to help you from grinding your teeth or to readjust your jaw, I can't really recall what it does. It did cost some money, and took a little time, but it did help and pretty much cured my TMJ.

I've have a lot of health problems but TMJ has been the most painful thing I've experienced. Good luck to you.

Hi Andy. Sorry I took so long to get back to you. I've been preoccupied. I've only spoken to the owner a couple of times through email. As far as I know its just caged and mulched like in the picture. Then it gets christmas lights burlap and plastic. Thats it. If I were you I'd plant it in the ground. At very least sink the pot into the ground. Another thing. I think the burlap and plastic method could backfire. If they are both wrapped to close to the ground the whole thing could turn into a big candle wick and suck up all kinds of moisture. If it was me doing it I would use christmas lights and a double or triple layer of frost cloth. It will get cold protection but will still be able to breathe. Not that what he's done hasn't worked thus far. I would just do it a little different. Hope this helps. Jay

So sorry this has happened to you after good luck for so long. My first thought is House Wrens, they can and will pierce eggs and throw eggs and or young nestlings from the nestbox. Normally once the nestlings are 7+ days old they are too big for the wren to throw out though. How old were the baby blues? sialis.org has info on house wrens and lots of other great info on hosting bluebirds and other cavity nesting birds. Glad to hear you have a spooker up if you have HOSP in the area...they aren't nesting in another box in your yard are they? If you have HOSP in the area, house sparrow management is a must. Also just to make sure, is your box mounted on a slick metal pole with a predator baffle and at least 15 feet away from any fence/tree or anything a predator could jump from? What you need to do right now to get the Blues to renest is to clean out the nest and either move the box a bit away from where it was (unless you have another empty box near there) or move the direction of the box..if it was facing east, maybe turn it north. Normally Blues will not renest in a box that they had a failed nesting in but by moving or turning it, they might renest. However if this was a house wren you may end up with the same problem. Wren guards work (sialis has this info too) but normally if the wren knows the box is there, they would still find the hole with the wren guard on. So first you need to find out if indeed it was a wren or something else if the box isn't baffled, however most predators would eat the nestlings not throw them out like a wren does. Good luck! Donna

I agree TMJ can be very painful. You probably are grinding your teeth. I had a dental appliance and it does help but the best advice I can give you is go to a chiropractor. Make sure the one you pick does TMJ adjustments. I had a horrible headaches over my right eye and NOTHING could get rid of it. I just happened to mention it to the chiropractor when I went for something else. He did adjustments a few times and the headaches disappeared and never came back. That was almost 30 years ago. Now, I am not going to tell you the adjustment doesn't hurt because it does, but not for long and it's sooooo worth it. Good luck.

yes it is very painful. I have TMJ and I wear a nite plate that was made for me. I only wear it if I have flare-ups, which is very seldom now. I think my nite plate is to keep my jaw aligned.

I thought I had tmj for months and was treated and then I went to my physician who tested me for infection and, sure enough, I had a sinus problem that cleared up with antibiotics and the tmj disappeared.
