DH Got a Traffic Ticket

I was so shocked because he is such a good driver & the only ticket I remember him ever getting was for not wearing a seatbelt when the law first went through. Boy, the prices have skyrocketed. It's gonna be around $135, plus $50 for traffic school so he doesn't get it put on his DMV or on the insurance. All because we didn't see the sign for no left turn & the fact that a motorcycle cop was right there on the job (didn't see him either).

Glad he gets the school option. Sure wish we did.

That sounds pretty cheap to me! DH has more traffic tickets than anyone I know. In Texas you can only take defensive driving once a year, and he hasn't missed a year. I got one 4 yrs ago in Waxahachie, Tx. and it cost $250. I creep through little towns now. DH does have a radar detector and that's saved him more times than one!! Especially on the interstate.

Yeah, insurance costs in Michigan were a huge shocker for us when we moved here. It was more than double what we paid in California without any tickets on either of our records. Apparently, part of the reason it's so high is there is no cap allowed on medical expenses for the insured. I don't know the specifics, but what has been explained to me is it doesn't matter what the cause is, if you have a heart attack, have an accident or get any type of injury while in your car, the auto insurance is responsible for your medical needs until you don't need them anymore. No matter what the situation, if you're in your car, you're covered. Also, it's a no fault state so for example, when I was rear ended by a teenager (texting?) while at a dead stop behind 8 other cars at that same light, it was my insurance company who took care of us and paid for our repairs. After we were back to new, they then negotiated with his insurance company for reimbursement. We were hit on a Saturday and our rear end was in need of some work. Within 24 hours an adjuster was at our house and 4 days later I was back on the road good as new. When a similar situation happened in California, I was in a rental for 2 months. It costs a lot and insurance companies are picky, but it seems you are completely protected in the end. I think the there is something terribly wrong with the system if there is no way someone can prove their innocence and be let off of a ticket. The entire system is just broken and corrupt.

would you pay from $700-$6,700 for a football ticket?

i'd spend double that $6700. to see a chicago cubs world series game and i'd pay it per game! of course i grew up going to games as did my father and neither of us has had the opportunity to get to spend that much on a cubs world series ticket :-( i might spend $500-700 to see certain concerts once my dh is done w/ his MS degree. i believe in buying an experience and having that memory forever...~ liz

Tickets? No Tickets?

The problem, as I see it, is that reunions can be a pretty pricey fee, and people who use to all live in the same place are now coming in from all over. I've done fundraisers where we might have one or two "But I paids!", but they're local and since the costs are low, we can just comp them on their word and straighten it out later. Here's an idea: Get a free email account from Gmail or Yahoo in the name of the reunion. When you receive a payment, enter it in your spread sheet, and send a confirmation e-mail to the payer, including names of attendees (or "2 guests" if you don't know) and amount paid. If they don't have e-mail, send it to the Reunion's e-mail (i.e., self) with the payers name on the subject line and mail a printout of it by post. For last minute payments, do the same thing but keep the printouts and hand them to the people as they arrive. If you save a couple of template e-mails, you can just plug in the names, amounts and e-mail address and send it off, so it shouldn't take any more work than mailing a paper ticket would. On the invitation, tell people that their confirmation e-mail is their ticket/proof of payment. This way you have a double check that can't be accidentally written over for what came in, you can look up if you sent the e-mail, and they can show you a print out, or the e-mail on their phone. That said, one of the emotionally worst things I've ever had to do was stand at the door of a paid event with a caterer, where the caterer demanded an exact headcount, and tell someone who was a member of the organization, but who hadn't paid, that she couldn't come in. So that's another piece of advice: Plan a few extra meals, etc., so you can comp someone rather than turn them away hungry.

I got my first speeding ticket a few years ago (after having a license over 20 years). $150 or so, but made my insurance go up over $100 for 3 years! Then a few months ago I had an expired inspection sticker ($160, oops) and a written warning for speeding (45 mph on a road that should be 55. I was on automatic pilot on my way home late at night, my fault). Then less than 2 months after the inspection ticket I got pulled over about 10 minutes after picking up a rental car. I usually drive an SUV and this was a little sports car. I didn't realize I was speeding, I was just moving along with traffic. The cop gave me a terse lecture (as did DH, who was sitting next to me) since I'd just had the written warning (same town!), but he let me off with another written warning. My father is a retired cop. I never pull strings, I always pay for my tickets.

I never used to get tickets when I was younger. I don't know if the cops are stricter, or my being less cute matters.

Vannie,
which one of our WONDERFUL guys gave you the ticket? there is one cop here in town with a horrible rep for taking out his fights with his wife on the driving public...

He gave me one about 4 years ago too...

I got my first one ever a few months ago. The cop said I was going 63. I was on a parkway (where the speed limit is 55 but should be 60). There's one little short zone where the speed limit drops to 50 & that's where he pulled me over. That area is a speed trap; I know several people who have gotten tickets in that one little zone (maybe two miles).

I looked into traffic school, but my ins. agent said that I needed to get the speed dropped & that traffic school wouldn't fix that. Apparently here the traffic school only works as long as you aren't too many mph over the speed limit. I paid a lawyer $250 to plead it down. That $250 paid the lawyer, the court costs & the ticket. I didn't complain.

Please note that many cities here in ND had to scale back on the amount of any tickets, because they cannot charge more than the state law allows. Check your state law!! They may be breaking the law. EX: Speeding in the Fargo area was over 100.00, now much less. So, I imagine they will be giving more to make up for the change.

Another thing, if you suspect a speed trap--contact both the Auto Club and your state attorney general. Most states will cooperate.
