Another way to get rid of the light switch in the pantry is to put a door light switch in. Door opens and light comes on. Door closes and light goes off. I've had one in my last two pantries and love it. There is a link to one below. Didn't research them at all so don't know if that is a good brand, just wanted to show you what I was talking about.

The 6" isn't a "pantry". It holds small items, but nothing very large at all. If you can't do at least a 12" pull out, I would skip it. The expense vs. storage gained isn't worth it unless you have a very tiny kitchen. With your description of a separate pantry, this isn't a very tiny kitchen.

is there a bulb already in the pantry? if so, you can buy a part for it to turn light on by motion.

side of fridge shelves - can you have sockets put in it? use a shelf for charging.

if you keep a few shelves open you could put decorative things on it. behind doors 6" should fit 2 cans deep of campbell sized soup. 1 can deep of larger cans. also thing like salad dressings, pickles, ketchup - other condiments. a pkg of paper towels, extra dish soap and dw soap, sponges/scrubbers, spray cleaner, Windex, stack of light bulbs, vitamins and other meds (if no kids) - lots of things will fit on those shelves. it's usable space.

water bottles and soda bottles/cans too.

6-inches might be better served as a broom closet or a pegboard that pulls out rather than pantry storage, I think 6'' storage is important as part of a pantry but I don't know about the cost-benefit analysis in this case.

Poohpup - another great idea - you are always thinking of great ideas - of course I would have to close the pantry door - one problem is the pantry tends to be a bit warm due to hot water pipes up one wall, so I do tend to keep the door cracked open so the onions and potatoes don't sprout too soon.

Green design - you are probably right - maybe a better word is a "filler" - it would hold small items and some oil and vinegars because the pantry is too warm. I will probably nuke the idea but will go to the KD and take a look at it.

We have narrow drawers in an 8" gap next to our fridge, and they hold a really surprising amount of stuff.

(Have you used a pullout before? My one caveat would be that you've tried one in person first - I had a tall narrow pullout in a rental kitchen and just hated it, I was forever dumping things all over the floor when I pulled it out or slid it in. Because it was so thin, most of the things that fit in there had pretty small centers of gravity compared to their height, and tipped easily.)

Poohpup, those pressure switches are great if one actually remembers to close the pantry!

I have motion sensors all over the place and love them. When first installed, my electrical bill dropped dramatically. My STBX never turned off a light to save his life, so motion sensors did the trick. I also have 15 pocket doors and swear by them. :)

I can't speak to such a narrow pantry, but it sounds like a great use of space to me. Nothing like a blank slate!

My first thought was the pegboard pullout for your broom and cleaning tools with the 6" space. I have seen it done with as little as 4". You can hang a lot of stuff in there as it is a tall cab. If you hang baskets on it you can put rags there, zip loc bags, garbage bags, etc.. I bet you can think of many things to store there that the heat won't bother....

I hate wasted space and I hate regrets -- especially those resulting from being afraid to ask, so I'd at least have to ask and then make a decision on whether the changes are worth it. We almost didn't do the hutch in the breakfast room because we thought it would be too much. Turned out to be a great thing when we did.

If you have the 6" space next to the fridge with a panel to cover, you can always decide whether to pullout, hinge, attach a wire pullout, pegboard or whatever as you progress. You could even change it over time. If you don't do it now, you probably can't go back and recapture it.

what lascatx said ... if you stick a RevAShelf pullout into that 6" space, a considerable amount of it is devoted to the thing itself, the little metal rails that go along the side of the shelves, for example. Circuspeanut's shelves probably hold stuff more efficiently if that matters for you. I have a 6" pullout next to my range for oils and the like. I'm sure purists would wonder about too much heat for things there, but I haven't noticed a problem. I like it in that location but if I needed it to hold a lot of food, I'd be less thrilled.

I didn't tell DH about the filler cabinet idea - I am going to look at it at the KD over the weekend.

I really need something to cover up the floor where the ventilation was routed to the second floor - so a filler would work - just not sure about function.

Back in touch after my journey to the KD. OK - only about 25 miles away - still a journey (via bicycle). I will look at drawers also.
