How to make a drop ceiling look good?

So we have a teeny tiny "room" off of our living room that I would like to fix up to use as my mom cave/sun room. It is actually the front porch which was enclosed years ago by the previous owners. It is approximately 9' x 9' and has 2 large windows (1 facing South, 1 facing West). It also has a really ugly drop ceiling. I lifted one of the tiles to see what was going on in there, secretly hoping the original ceiling was vaulted or something, but there was electrical running everywhere and it would be a lot of work to take the drop ceiling down and make what's left look pretty. I really don't want to spend a lot of money on this project since I hope one day to rip the walls down and turn it back into a front porch. So I've decided to work with the drop ceiling, but something needs to be done. Does anyone have any ideas on how to make it look updated and pretty? I would love to paint the tiles a light blue colour, but I have no idea what to do with the metal parts.

You can paint the metal parts the same color as the tiles. And paint would be the cheapest upgrade--I vote for paint.

I've seen fabric woven through the metal parts, so that it drapes slightly below each tile, but that's a lot of work... and lot of fabric... and a specific "look."

You can also source cheap decorative tile to go over what you have. But I would start with paint and see how that turns out.

Use Rustoelum or similar on the metal. See

Hi repainting, Could you help out another william morris addict? I'd love to buy direct as you did, but I can't figure out how. First I went to the Sanderson site, which led me to the Morris and co. subsite, which, on the FAQ regarding direct orders: "All orders are referred to our Specialist retailers, for more information please visit the "Where To Buy" section on our website for a full list." Perhaps you ordered from a UK retailer with a very low markup? All I can find online are retailers like historic style and pendleton woodworks. Let's see, I'd like to get 4 yards of autumn flowers velvet for a chair I'm recovering; even with conversion, it's $250/yd from historic style. I've got to believe there's a little bit of extra markup in that price! Now, I know retailers have to make a buck, but I guess at these rates I'd rather they make it off someone else. So any info. you have about what you did would be greatly appreciated. Otherwise it's off to Joann during a 50% off home decorating fabrics sale to find a compromise. I can get a velvet at less than 1/10th of the price from them. I'd pay triple or quadruple for a morris pattern, but tenfold more? At those rates, I'd be better off making my own morris stencil and figuring out how to screenprint on plain fabric. Or something. tia, Alex

Palimpsest - Yes, I think that's what we're going to do, follow the stair skirt exactly. Thanks all, glad I wasn't alone in thinking this was crazy (the contractor is still defending his plan - apparently he doesn't see what we all do, but is at least willing to take it off and redo to match the skirt instead). Going to check it tomorrow and help him with the boxes - we're drawing these with pencil first :-)

Make sure they are at least double the width of the window so they are full and use pleated drapes so they hang well and if they are lined, they will look even better. Use a nice rod and you can add trim for more interest. You could add a blind and leave drapes open

There are some nice decorative replacement tile options including Ceilume. They have decorative strips that cover the metal parts too.

Can simulate a tin or vaulted look if you want
