Did we have a worse winter than usual for zone 5? My 1 yr sweet autumn clematis hasn't returned. Another established clematis, type 3, didn't return. If it's Venosa Violacea I'm going to be upset, I have to check my garden "map". My container spruce, which I wrap well each year and made sure to water during warmer temps is really brown. My 2 year Fothergilla Major Mt. Airy died. My 1st year Willow Hakuro Nishiki looks completely dead. My 3rd year Golden Spirit died back to the snow line, but this didn't happen in prior years. My "Grace" came back a real winner, no dieback at all. My Sombreuil Rose bush, which I usually bury the crown, wrap in burlap and cover each winter, though the only thing I did this past winter was cover the crown and nothing more, returned with very little dieback to my amazement. Better than any other year. Go figure. Some hostas, which I was warned last year after purchasing that they aren't hardy, never to be seen again. Some groundcover sedum which probably never had a chance to establish -- nothing. Also lost a Weigela My Monet, thankfully still under warranty. Very Bad year!!!! Oh, and don't fret about the Asters. I had several varieties and they've all disappeared. I suspect it's the rabbits.

Hi Susan! I absolutely agree with your approach! Too often you will see many people panic and run for the pesticide/insecticide/miticide or insecticidal soap/neem/etc. with little thought for the overall consequence of their actions. I know that God created every single creature for a reason, and this is true in the garden just as it is in the rest of the world. When a gardener tries to wipe out any given pest, they disrupt the food chain and throw everything off balance. Once your bug populations are out of balance, it is very easy for any given pest to overpopulate and become an actual problem (instead of being perceived as a problem just by their presence in the garden). Your example of the milkweeds, aphids and green lacewings is an excellent example. Suppose a butterfly lover were able to wipe out ALL the aphids. With no food to support their population, the green lacewings will either move on to an area with a good supply of food, or they will die. That butterfly gardener's entire garden is then more vulnerable to any bug infestation because the lacewings aren't around any more to keep other bug populations in check. So, obviously you have done the correct thing by letting the natural system work in your landscape. If I have learned anything at all from a lifetime of gardening, it is that the various insects will pretty much take care of each other. That's one reason I prefer to release beneficial insects...it is working within the natural system instead of outside of it. Could you and I ever convince some of those butterfly gardeners to let the aphids stay on the milkweed and then let the green lacewings take care of the aphids themselves?I doubt it. I think the whole 'working within the realm of nature and its cycles' thing is a unique wisdom a gardener acquires over time. Some people catch on to it sooner, some later, and some never. Does this mean that I don't panic when a specific bug population appears to be out of control? No. Of course I still get concerned. But I try to figure out first if there is an actual problem. I try to wait it out and see if nature will correct the situation (it usually does). I try to determine if the damage...like holes in leaves, for example,...is just something that is "visually unpleasant" or is actually damaging to the plant. And I have learned, through the years, that often the best action to take is "no action". So, I guess our approach is best thought of as working with nature, instead of against it, and how can that be wrong? Dawn (who is tired and will now climb down off her soapbox and stop ranting)

DH is doing all the cooking tonight. DS would help but he is not very good at it. We are having 'Surf n Turf'. He picked up top sirloin steaks which he is cooking on the grill, giant crab claws, fresh asparagras, mashed Yukon Gold potatoes and some homemade sourdough bread I made today. For dessert we are having killer Trader JoeÂs Ice Cream Cake. He picked that up yesterday. It is a layer of rich chocolate cake, topped by a layer of the chocolate-est of chocolate ice creams, topped by a layer of crunchy chocolate cookie crumbs, topped by a layer of creamy chocolate chip ice cream, the outside of the cake rolled in more chocolate cookie crumbs, and decorated the top with rosettes of whipped cream. Just hand me a glass of wine and I will be all set. Oh, almost forgot, he made oatmeal pancakes for breakfast this morning. And I got to goof off all day. Clare

This is an entertaining thread. I've read all the way through, and realize that dh and I are extremely fortunate in that our tastes coincide on so many levels, and he's very agreeable after I spend hours researching agonizing over selections. What I have learned though, after we built a home 10 years ago, is that it all needs to be done at the outset. Because after the initial construction is finished he is extremely resistant to more construction mess. I had FREE labor offering to help me finish my sewing studio - no go. And the backsplash that we were going to finish after we moved in and lived with a kitchen for awhile - never happened. We sold the house 7 years later, and it was still ABB. So this house, my studio has been an integral part of the plan, AND I just found my perfect backsplash. I can't join the ABB club, or I will forever be without a backsplash. It's all just knowing your own particular dynamic. I'm agonizing right now over which sink to put into the kitchen. I've asked his opinion - he said "get whatever you want" We've gone over our plans with a fine tooth comb in the last week, and I found a few places where we could change selections or leave off, and he pretty much added everything back in.

So is it a treat when a gentleman opens the door for you, or it is something you are used to?

Me, being independent, as I am, went for the door handle, and he politely said "let me".

Oh, gosh, I've been with my husband since 1981 so it's been a very long time since there's even been an opportunity for another guy to open a door for me.

Hubs is a keeper. He always opens the car door for me to get in, and most of the time he jumps out and gets around to my side to at least help me out if he doesn't make it time to also open the door.

He always opens doors for me going into or out of a building, too.

Nada, not that one!

He's my neighbor, who doesn't really live here. He has a main home in Peach Tree City GA, and bought the condo when I bought mine.
Bought it so he'd have a place to stay when visiting his lady friend.
Now she's not AS available, so he just comes in for a nite then gone again.

Never been invited to lunch, but he just knocked and asked if I would like to have lunch with him. OF COURSE!

He's extremely nice and it was just nice to be with the opposite sex and be treated as a lady!

I am with you,Glenda; it is nice to be treated like a lady. I understand that young men today are not sure what to do as some young women resent anyone holding a door or chair for them and tell them so in no uncertain terms.

And yes,the youngster,inasmuch is he is one of the younger generation,is a most discernable gentleman..all the time.

How exciting! My DH grew up in another country and they didn't have a car and they don't date over there, so opening car doors wasn't something he knew how to do. When I met him, he didn't drive, so I was always driving. He has always opened doors for me (or any woman). I get annoyed when my DH holds the door open for another woman and she sails through without so much as a thank you. I generally say loudly, "YOU'RE WELCOME". He doesn't have to do if for anyone else, but some women feel it is their right and don't bother saying thank you.

Glenda, I am wondering about his lady friend, though. Does she live in the same condo place you do? Maybe you'll become his lady friend.... :)

P.S. My mother was 6 years older than my father and they were together 39 years until her death at 66.

The first man who treated me like a lady was my Daddy.When I was a kid,and we went for a walk, he insisted on walking on the side of the sidewalk by the street. He's been gone since 1998 and I still miss him.

How fun, Glenda!!! I am sure it was just fun to dine with a gentleman....hopefully it will happen more! =)

Dean is very much a gentleman with doors! He also made it hard for the girls' BF's!! Kalie doesn't care as much, but Caryn expects it from a date! She will stand at a door and WAIT for it to be opened for her by her date...some guys have just never been taught that...ever!

I insist on being treated like a lady. I will move slightly aside at a door, if there is a man behind me, so he knows that he is supposed to get the door. Works every time. I do always say thank you and flash a smile. I think most men like to open doors for women, they just forgot how, women's lib and all

Denny has always treated me like a lady....

But since his stroke I have opened a few for him...Some of those door are so heavy and hard to open it is hard for him. I'm careful though to let him be "the man"....
Strokes take a lot away from a person...I try to let him feel like the man he still is to me.

Glad you had a fun day Glenda....everyone needs days like that every now and then.
