Thank you both so much for your suggestions! I tried to take some photos to show the light conditions now that the leaves are out. This is in the morning, and there's some sun filtering through, but I can tell you there's almost complete shade from the stone wall at the back to about 15-20 ft. in front of the large maple tree all day. From the picture in the next post, you can see there's shade well into the parking lot as well. However, I'm really glad to hear you both think 10 ft. should be sufficient height. Yardvaark, you make a good point about competition from the small maples. So, I think we'll take those out, and possibly the smaller of the hemlocks as well. Then, put in a mix of evergreen and deciduous shade-tolerant shrubs/small trees that reach 10-12 ft with staggered layers for depth. I'm also somewhat relieved you said 'it's not a formal solution'. That means I should just relax since I can't really make a mistake! Lazygardens, I've wondered what the huge rhododendrons people grow around here were - I guess 'rhododendron maximum' is it! Regarding the fence, it's a good idea. I'm not really a fence person, but if we put in smaller, slower growing plants it's going to take a while to screen with greenery, so the fence may be the best short-term solution. Then we can take our time building up the plantings. Yardvaark, I really like your idea of testing out a few small varieties first to see what does well and then increase from there. Cheaper that way, too! Let me know if you have any additional comments/suggestions based on the new pics. Thanks again for your help!

It sounds like what you are saying is that your GP page is opened part way and you are still missing the bar at the bottom. The little square you are talking about is at the top of my window and nothing is on the bottom except the bar. You have two options you can try.You haven't said anything about the tool bar on top so I'm guessing it's there. If so, click on "view" and click on tool bars and make sure "status bar" is checked If it isn't,that bottom bar will disappear from your GP window. See if that works for you.

Just a couple of practical notes: What is boggy now may not be all season, so if you haven't been there a full growing season, do planning and prep now and over the summer for fall planting. In the long run it will make your choices more successful. IME regular lawn grass doesn't grow well in really wet soil, and yours looks OK from the photo. What needs do you have beyond screening? Dogs? Kids' play area? Patio for sun or shade? Storage shed? You will want to plan and include spots for all your needs even if screening is going near the top of the to-do list. Where are you? Once you have decided on a general design, you can ask for suggestions of particular plants in an appropriate forum such as the tree, conifer or shrub forums, all of which are quite active. If you want to add location to your profile so that it posts automatically by your name, here's how: Go to Your Houzz in the upper right of every page, click Edit Profile, and on the left side click advanced settings. Well down the advanced settings page is a blank labeled Climate Zone for Garden Forums along with a link to find your zone. If you add info on your state or the nearest large city you will get even better information since zone only relates to average coldest winter temperatures. Then return to the top of the page and click Done Editing.

Okay, there is just a whole lot wrong there, and it is not just the shower pan, thus some of the harsh comments. The tiles do not overlap the pan, providing no mechanism to channel water from the walls into the pan. Water will get through the grout on the walls. It should then travel down a waterproof membrane, into the pan and down the drain. Your installation can't do that. The water will go down the waterproofing (assuming it exists), outside your shower pan and into lower walls and/or your floor. Even if your tile DOES overlap the shower pan, water can still wick out side the pan area, then down the wall, into the floor, because your pan isn't big enough. Simply purchasing a new enclosure to sit on top of the pan will not solve this problem Your existing glass panel doesn't even reach the end of the shower pan, providing an easy avenue for water to reach outside the shower "enclosure. Even if you increase the size of your shower pan to cover the entire area, if the waterproofing wasn't done correctly, you will still have water in your walls. Unless your entire bathroom floor is constructed like a wet area, with waterproofing and a drain mechanism, then this is destined to be a problem no mater what you do with the enclosure. Given all of that, we are back to, "This is beyond stupid." Reality is, you will replace this now for a large fee, OR you will replace this and repair the water damage for a really large fee. Pay now or pay more later - it's as simple as that.
