Today I Got My Piece of the Rock (pics)

Like all of you I love coming here and looking pictures of kitchens no matter what state of renovation they are in. Well today we took a big step toward completion. The granite was installed and I love it. I could not be happier with how it looks with the cabinets (Kraftmaid Holace Cherry Square doors with the Kaffe stain) and oak floor.

If it had not been for this site I would have chosen a much more boring stone. Seeing other kitchens here gave me the courage to go for this beautiful Juparana Arandis.

This is not a finished kitchen yet. We still need the pulls (on back-order), backsplash and the accessories but I am very happy with how it has progressed. Being a DIY kitchen (except for the granite), has been a very rewarding experience.

Mona Lisa, Mona Lisa, men have named you...and I call ya Juparana Arandis.

Sink is now operating!! Krauss stainless double farmhouse

I have missed my induction cooktop greatly over the past few weeks...and now it works!

Woo-hoo! Been following your DIY journey and am very happy for you and the DP. Thanks for the inspiration. And, as per other GW threads, you have substituted the "towel pig" for a "towel butler." Very nice.

Thanks donnas. You can get a free Photobucket account. You simply upload your pictures; I resize the picture in Photobucket so that it fits the page well (without expanding off to the right). You copy the tag, as shown in the picture below, directly into this thread. Here's another hummer shot; I took it at the same feeder at a different angle. I've had the impatiens there since May; I can't believe I've missed such colorful shots! Too bad it was at dusk; it came out kind of grainy :( At least I have a second male. He was also perched on the fence (the same spot that my regular frequents) while my regular male was at the feeder. I was surprised that one didn't chase away the other...

Good to know you're back on better footing. It's a good lesson for all to sleep on the problem before you address it. That's a practice I always recommend. It allows you to cool down and respond correctly to the actual scale of the issue rather than the perceived scale of the issue that is always larger than life and emotional when first encountered. In other words, if this was the final labor on the project rather than just a prelim screwup that the GC hasn't even viewed yet, the scale of the issue would be much higher. You always want to save the escalated response to an inadequate response from the GC after he has had a chance, not the first response being volcanic. 20% for the material surcharge is for the time spent selecting the correct material, any associated required components, ordering the material, arranging for it's transport, receiving the shipment, inspecting it that it is correct and undamaged, and storing it so that it remains undamaged. Time is money and none of those services are free. ;) You'll pay it one way or the other, even if it's not specified in the contract. You'll pay higher labor fees, or you'll get less warranty, or something. The slack gets picked up somehow if the contractor is an actual business man and is going to actually remain in business. It's better to be above board with all charges in writing so you understand what goes into a remodel. If you elect to select and purchase your own materials, then you are the one responsible for all of the above and the contractor is no longer the point of warranty with the product.

trhought- You're right, it should make for some interesting swimming around the boulders in the pool. Those rocks were not in the original drawing, it was something the PB decided to do as he was placing them around the pool. There are two that will be in the water, the largest one is way off to the right (you can just see the edge of it in one of the pictures). I only hope they're secured REALLY well - it would be terrifying to think of one of them coming loose someday.... Right now they are balancing precariously on top of little rocks and bricks. Here's a better picture of the rock on the right.

I think you have achieved a very good and interesting monotone look which one doesn't see in alot of kitchens. The inclusions in the slabs will add depth. It makes me want to re-do my kitchen but we just did a master bedroom/bath,hall bath renovation. I can't believe I'm even saying this as the job took twice as long due to the vanity troubles (Bertch). Anyway my husband says we have no money left so no fear there!!

It's gorgeous. Your cabinets are gorgeous. Your appliances are gorgeous. Your floor is gorgeous too. I can't wait to show your pictures to my dh. Love the counter color with the cabinets and floor.

You have "Good Taste", may I call you "Charlie"?

We installed that 6 years ago, and we still love it!
Our backsplash is the same granite.

We have never needed to reseal it and it still looks as new.

Another name for it is Arandis Gold, we love the movement, particularly in the backsplash, looking at it is kind of like a trip to our local mountains!

Looks fantastic! Granite is lovely and matches the cabinets nicely. I have that same exact Kraus sink! Looks great, but what a giant PITA to keep clean with hard water. It's actually got me thinking about investing in a water conditioning system.

Thanks for all the great compliments. Just a few details about the kitchen for now. I'll post them all when it is completed.

The granite has a 1/2 bull nose edge. I chose this because I wanted a flat surface on the bottom where I could place my hand to catch crumbs as I wipe them off. I also wanted to stay simple to match the style of cabinets.

Flooring is Somerset Country Collection with the buttercup finish. It is hand-scraped and helps hide the scrapes my 2 labs put into it every day. I figured I might as well blend in what I knew was inevitable. :-)

@hsw_sc - I chose boschboy as my name because I carried a picture of the Bosch appliances I wanted with me to the office for 6 months before I ordered them. I had to remind myself what I was working for. :-)
