MDF vs Birch to put with Birch existing cabs?
Comments (3)This is what most companies are going to, it reduces lines in between the staves or where the center panels are glued together. We order our doors as hybrid, hard maple rails and stiles with hdf mdf center panels. This way you get the durability around the edges but you get the stability of the mdf center panel, You can not tell the difference in the 2 materials once they are painted. If you use a latex paint you could go all hardwood and you may be okay because the finish flexes a little, but pigmented varnishes and lacquers are harder and show the movement more....See MoreSugar Maple vs. Miyabe Maple
Comments (39)That's very interesting, esp. considering our experience last fall. The autumn brilliance serviceberry in the front was still green when all or most of the other maples in the neighborhood had lost their leaves. It coincided with the oaks that turn red. It was one of the very last trees to turn. The one in the backyard changed about a week earlier for some reason, but was still late. The Dakota Pinnacle was the very last tree to turn and stuck out like a sore thumb with bright yellow leaves when everything else on the street was bare. We live near the Bailey Nursery headquarters where they have a bunch of trial plants surrounding their parking lots with labels, and i drive past a lot. Their Dakota Pinnacle birch also didn't change til everything else had lost leaves. And their Sunburst (which is extremely enormous, like an old oak) looked like ours, leaves turning a kind of olive/copper green then falling after frost and snow. They have something labeled as a Japanese maple but I think it's a Korean maple. Japanese maples aren't hardy here. That was one of the first trees to lose leaves....See MoreAre these maple or birch floors?

Comments (8)If you are keeping the cabinets (yellow tones) then the white maple (for me) is out. The blueish tinge will clash with the cabinets (just like the tiles are doing right now). I know you want to replace 'like with like' (white carpet and tiles replaced with white wood) but it won't work very well with the yellow maple cabinets. When 'updating' I like to see some new colours in place of old white. The pale maple should do the trick without clashing with anything yellow in the home. Just remember: maple has a history of DARKENING. Yep. If it starts out PALE yellow it will eventually turn to the mid-level yellow you see in your kitchen. Which means if you start with a WHITE maple you will turn it to a muddy-yellow/burnt white colour. Maple is PHOTOSENSITIVE = the colour gets DARKER when exposed to UV light (sunlight or lamp light...doesn't matter). Before you choose the colour you want you really want to find out if the manufacturer spent money on a UV blocking agent (expensive) to ensure the maple does NOT turn yellow. If in doubt, buy a box of EACH colour. Pull out TWO planks from each box and leave it exposed to natural sunlight for a few months. Leave the rest of the planks in the boxes (closed and kept in a dark place). Once you have had the planks exposed for 2-3 months (longer is better but that might not work for you), go ahead and compare the exposed planks to the non-exposed planks. You should see the exposed will be a snick darker. That's when you know the planks have NOT been treated....See More- 14 years ago
