Paper Pieced Guild Name Tag

The local quilt guild members all wear name tags at the meetings. Each member makes their own tag in accordance with the size specifications and incorporates either their own design or a tiny version of a block from the donation quilt for that year. I'm just joining the guild and don't know yet what the pattern will be for the show quilt next year, so I chose a small paper piece pattern. My other passion is gardening, so I 'picked' this daisy. The flower portion is just 3"x3" and it was a challenge for this new paper piecer! Keeping up the gardener's theme, I added a couple bug beads. The whole tag is 4"x6". I used batiks mostly and a blue sky fabric for the background. I'm pleased with the results. (sorry the picture is a little fuzzy)

It looks beautiful!! maybe they require you to make your own name tag as a "test" ~LOL ~. Yea ~ you passed.

My first PP was on teeney pieces. One hint is to trim the seams 1/8" and press any way to get the seams flat w/out distorting. PPing makes me feel empowered....I love using up the scraps.

I love your bugs and beads. You will impress the guild members with your creativity.

I've been thinking of attending one of our guild meetings.
I'm not sure I am ready....please report back on your experience.

Rather than use a stake with a tag attached, I ended up using black plastic "gutter guard" screening. I make a circle around the base of the rose using UV cable ties to close the loop. I then attach the label to the cutter guard. The picture below may help make it clear. https://picasaweb.google.com/HAKuska/HenrySRoses#slideshow/5070748980103566482 I feel that this worked better than a stake as I had the same problem that seil had: "My problem with tags that stick in the soil and not tied to the rose is that they seem to disappear on me." Usually, plants that come from different sources have different tags... some are paper, some plastic... but most fade fairly fast! It would be so nice to tag a plant once, and not have to worry about reading that tag after winter or heavy rains. Soda cans would be a good source of aluminum, and it would be good to recycle something... but I bet aluminum could also be found at craft and hobby shops, or in the aluminum siding or gutter sections of home improvement stores. Thick aluminum food trays or pans might work, as well. And the only tools required would be a pair of tin snips or heavy duty scissors, a hole punch or sharp object, and a pen or stylus... something to emboss the tags with the plant names. It's so frustrating to write out wooden or plastic tags, only to have them fade blank by spring!

One thing I did forget to mention, when you're scribing the letters, do it on something cushie, like a mouse pad or a pad of paper. A hard surface won't work.

What a fun thread. I love the playing card idea. You can get clear labels in many sizes to print on your computer then stick it onto a vintage playing card or what ever and the design will show through. I have some clear labels here at the office, elephantear. I'll take some home tonite and see if they stick to concrete. Something else that occurs to me is you can probably print on masking tape if you buy the wider one and really stick it down good on a piece of transparency film or something with some bulk that you can remove the tape from after. I've done similar with scrapbooking - that is printed on a little piece of paper that I've already cut out by sticking it onto something 8.5 x 11. Here is a scan of transparancy film with masking tape and printing that I just quickly did this in word as an example. I kind of like the rustic look of the masking tape. In order to get the space right you would type up a full page of what you want in Word and print it on plain paper to check if it is spaced right for your masking tape "layout" then adjust. The transparency film with tape pressed carefully down would probably also go through a copier and be more water proof than an ink jet printer. I just put one piece of tape at the top, but clearly the page could be filled with them. And it is perfectly straight, as printed, I just scanned it crooked :). kathy

That's so cute. Our guild pins a tag on us but all the same cardboard. I wonder if they'd throw me out if I showed up in something like yours. Hmmmm.

If you like the pattern and want to give it a try, here's a link to the daisy pattern. From start to finish the sewing took less than 2 hours and I'm a PP novice. I tried one 1/4 in a different color first, then changed my mind and started over, changing to a purplish fabric for the largest petals. The beading was another 1/2 hour. I just used a fabric pen for the name. It really didn't take very long at all. I guess that's the beauty of PP - it looks much more complicated than it is!
