If the trim has to be white, I'd look at blues. Take a look at houses with BM Van Deusen and Van Courtland on them. Historic colors, so they look great on Colonial/farmhouse/Victorian style houses.

I think the OP is using vinyl siding, in the Mastic brand. I have linked their colors below. The closest name I found is the second row green, last on the right, which is called 'Lakeshore Fern'.

tribbix, thanks. the blues are lovely but when you go to vinyl you lose A LOT in the translation. the blue vinyls are not very pretty. it's my punishment for not wanting to upgrade to something paintable.

so far am thinking of these 3 options but am open to others.

1) lakeshore fern (green) vinyl. white windows 2 over 1 double hung.. white trim everywhere, light blue porch ceiling. bright front door---color? porch floor stained or composite color ?

2) mustardy color vinyl. forest ridge "amber" . black windows white trim everywhere. white porch ceiling. bright front door--color? porch floor as above.

3) medium grey vinyl siding. black or white windows???? all white trim. light blue porch ceiling. bright front door -- color???? porch floor as above.

Are the windows paintable? If so, you could do them in an accent color for a little more design oomph:

I am partial to grey houses. So, I'd go for Victorian Grey, Silver Grey, or maybe Deep Granite with light blue porch ceiling, and a red or cobalt blue door. With this style house, I'd keep it one color. Note, I have two, but my house looks like Tibbrix's second pic (i.e. triangular eaves or whatever that part of the house is called.)

With a grey house, you can have red, blue, green, yellow, orange, purple, etc. for your door.

I couldn't find Forest Ridge Amber, so took a wild guess. Also took the liberty of a different door. The perfunctory 6 panel isn't farmhouse-y enough, IMO. Just throwing the idea out there...

How about classic white with green roof?

I was about to suggest white also because of what you say is the large white garage next to it. If it were me, I'd want to make them appear as a unit (even though detached), and the white might help accomplish that better than just having white trim. Plus, white houses can be really pretty. The one in this picture looks like it may have a detached garage in the background. It looks like they trimmed it out in black or some dark color. I'd also go with a dark or black roof. Just an idea anyway....

Love the grays with the bright doors that nosoccermom posted. That's my vote. I have a light "greige" beach house with teal painted doors that I love. The nice thing about gray is that you can do pretty much anything with your door(s)! Love the turquoise, bright good, or red options.

Love that gray with the facade detail. Can you do something like that in the apex of your house?

Fish scale shingles in the upper triangle of the facade may look nice.

The only thing may be that it might look more squatty because the angle is very large, and a horizontal line may squoosh it even more.

thanks, everyone. so far the people in my "real" world agree with nosoccermom's suggestion of grey with red door (black windows, white trim, and maybe blue ceiling).

so have given up all thoughts of whimsical/multiple colors. the contractor and the neighbors just breathed a huge sigh of relief.

and i think the gray color goes with the feng shui suggestion from boopadaboo.

maybe i can find a whimsical but tasteful gable design thingie. the gable space is probably too wide for the suggested scalloped shingles,
