Pentair- Clean & Clear plus filter drain plug problem

I tried to drain my filter by opening the bottom drain plug. I tried turning, what I thought was the plug, and this cap like looking thing broke off exposing what is the plug.

The way my filter was installed, the plug facing the wall of my house, it is very hard to reach this plug.

I used channel lock pliers to grab a hold of the plastic

hex nut and was able to loosen plug and drain.

My question is, does anyone know if I can replace that

cheap plug with o-ring with some kind of plastic or metal

ball valve? Will I still need an o-ring if I use a male threaded ball valve with teflon tape?

It just seem's to me that there has to be an easier and better way than what Pentair has.

Any thoughts, suggestions, help from the experts would highly be appreciated.

I've got the same filter and when I was going through pool school the PB rep told me to remove that plug to drain the tank before removing the filters and I was like "You've got to be kidding me!! How the heck can I even get a wrench on that thing, and then get it back on without cross-threading the plastic threads on it??" Then I pointed out to him that there is a hose bibb installed on the plumbing that is well below the tank seam, and why can't I just open that bibb up to drain the water down low enough to remove the canister top and pull the filters? He looked at it thoughtfully and said that indeed he couldn't think of why that wouldn't work. And that's exactly what I've been doing, LOL! It works great. Hopefully you have a bibb like that on your setup as well, if you do then give that a try and leave the bottom plug alone. Don't forget to open the valve on top of the filter canister to let air in as it's draining down.

They make a tool specifically for that plug. The plug is best replaced with the original. A pro can remove it pretty easy as we do it hundreds of times. That's probably why your guy said to remove it like it was a no brainer. The wrench is easier though.

I think you are right; it's probably turning the water over about every 1.5 to 2 hours. Is that not good enough for a very few koi (4 maybe?) in such a big pond? I do want the water to clear up first. Your advice is very sage, Horton. And I had read something like this at the Skippy site. I kept telling my "pond guy" who works for a koi guy that one is supposed to leave the filter alone and not clean it. The bacteria is supposed to settle in that filthy filter. I was glad he cleaned the bottom of the pool -- he did not scrape the sides. Glad to see that it really wasn't that bad, but there was some sludge. Now we can start anew. We have a handful of small goldfish and a bunch of mosquito fish in there now, and that's all. Every once in a while we see a frog. That is all the marine life. We have tested with the little test strip that tests for 4 things, and the water tests normal. So should I just wait about 4-6 weeks without any filter cleaning and see what happens? Maybe it was good to clean it that twice because the pond had no aeration for many many months. Now that it's quite aerated and hopefully filtered, maybe the bacteria collection can start. All my previous floating plants died off (when there was no water filtering). My lilies are very happy though, and some other plant that is reed-like with violet tiny bottle brush flowers is enjoying it too. I am starting to order more plants -- ordered some hyacinths this week and will attempt them again. I can't imagine starting to "winter" one's pond. Poor cold climate ponders! :( But then you get the beautiful seasons. I don't suppose we will have to ever do any wintering like that. I am curious how cold the water will get in the winter, but of course we never even have FROST here with our marine layer of cloud coverage. It keeps us pretty mild. We have not seen any of this stuff you all describe, this string algae. It always sounds so horrible. All we have is something clouding the waters. There may be a few inches of visibility but I'd hardly call it clear at this point. It used to be that the steps where the plants are would be actually clear, only around the plants. No longer. I will try not cleaning the filter. My "pond guy" will not agree, but hey - I can try this. I'm the boss. Though he is pretty wonderful and a very hard worker.

I had a hard time starting my GT 5000 and when it finally did start it would only run with the chock all the way out. Every time I pushed in the choke it died. The gas tank was full as I keep it full at all times when I'm done using it. Anyway, I siphoned the gas out of the tank and then ran the engine until it stopped. I then put in about a cup of gas and ran that out. I did this about three time and the engine began to run normal without the choke pulled out. I then put in a gallon of gas and drove it until it ran out. I then refilled the tank and it is running fine. My question is: Did I have a bad batch of gas? It was a couple of months old. Or do I need to change the fuel filter? I have a total of 22 hours running time on the engine since new with the original filter. its a 2005 model. Is it better to run the gas tank dry before storing the tractor for lets say 2 or three months or maybe longer? Thanks for any advice.

Hayward C series cartridge filter = On a clear tube that runs up the middle. Vial shaped. Pentair 320,420,520 = On top of the manifold under a spring. Mushroom shaped. StaRite System 3 = On top of the manifold. Kinda vile shaped. Hayward DE = Long fabric coated finger thing on top of manifold. Pentair FNS+ or Pac Fab FNS = On top of manifold. Mushroom shaped. Actually the above information is incorrect. When talking full rate pumps, none of the major manufacturers have a 1.5 hp 115V pump. 1.0 is the largest full rate that is convertable. As far as conserving energy goes there is no difference. You pay for your electricity by kilowatts. A SQ1102 1.0hp motor takes 9.6 amps at 230V Which is 2208 watts or 2.2KW. The same motor at 115V consumes 19.2 Amps and consumes the same 2.2 KW. The formula is Amps X Volts = Watts. The advantage of using a 230V motor is that you can use smaller wiring to go into the pump. At 19.2 amps you should have a #10 wire and a 25A or 30A Breaker. At 230V you can use a #14 and a 15 amp, or the more commonly used #12 230V. There is no need to put a 2 1/2" suction on a 1hp pump, especially not when you have a dedicated main drain and skimmer line. Getting back the original question, you are on the right path, but there is no reason that you need even a 1hp pump. To get a 6 hour turnover (overkill for residential) you need to move 24GPM. A 1/2 hp whisperflo should almost do double that. A 220sqft should be seriously overkill as it is for a pool of this size. You can always go larger, but I feel in 8900 gallons of water you would be wasting money. Godspeed on your new project. You will really like the whisperflo. I used a be a sta-rite fanatic, untill I started installing them. My only compliant is that they tend to need less service than the sta-rites.

I'd imagine you can get one anywhere. e-mail me and I'll find the part number by then. I know they are about $45.00

repair guy - thanks, but for $45.00, I'd rather drain it another way, and use the $45.00 to get a half a tank of gas.:)

Channel locks work great but when one can't get that to work, the wrench is the solution if you want no headaches. I use it all of the time but then again, I use it 15-20 times a week.

Well I guess I was a little confused.
The plug itself had a plastic cover over it that is glued on. The first time I cleaned the filter, I turned the cover, and the plug came out, and I reinstalled it.

The next time I went to remove the plug, the cover broke off. Why that cover was over the plug is a mystery. It had a small hex nut on it for a wrench, but the cover is only glued on to the plug.

Pentair sent a warranty person out today and he installed a
new plug, but even he didn't know why that glued on cover
was on there.
He did give me a tip on removing the plug, use the shaft of a screwdriver that will fit in the slot of the plug and turn it. I'll try it next time.
I do have this to say about Pentair to anybody who is
trying to decide between equipment. I called about my plug
filter problem one day, and they were out the next day to fix it. Now that is service!!!

That slotted hex plastic plug does loosen easy with a screwdriver blade but it is sometimes a bit tough on the Pentair. The same plug is on the Hayward and the access is easier. The newer versions of the Pentair tank have a totally different plug that can be turned by hand.

The only drawback to this filter is that every piece of black fitting that engages the tank is weak. From the bulkheads, to the plug to the air relief. They crack, leak and loosen more than any other brand out there. The only saving grace is that the tank itself is probably the strongest compared to the others. You'll replace more tank lids and bottoms on Hayward.

I overtightened the drain plug on my pentair ccp 420 and it snapped off. Is there any easy fix to this i.e. JB weld? That part that snapped off was the plug and the part it screws into leaving I am not sure what? Seems that would have to be taken out somehow and replaced with both new parts..

I snapped off my plug this week. After scouring the internet l thought I would use the technique of epoxying a pvc pipe inside the plug and twisting the plug out. I was afraid it would be my luck to epoxy the plug in.

My solution was to us the small straight pick (63697) from Harbor Freight. Going from inside the filter I was able to get enough torque and bite to get the plug threads out
