How do I paint my pool edging (pic included)

Hi, I have an old inground pool that has a plastic coping and a metal edge that looks pretty faded as you can see from the picture below. Could you can tell me how I can paint this coping and edging?

Do I need to prime these surfaces before painting?

I would think your best bet is to tape painters plastic on top of the pool and under the coping...then tape a mask of painters absorbant paper over that (kinda looks like thin paper trash bags -- and under the coping. Gonna be tough though to clean it and paint it. Is that metal Aluminum....because paint don't take too kindly to aluminum and has a tendency to do that over time. Is it possible just to remove that metal piece...it has screws. 1. It might look better without it and 2. It will be a lot easier to paint.

If you can remove the metal piece, you might be able just to rock the other part (or use slate)...it looks like concrete. Then use something to transition the height back to the deck. Thats what I would do.

I have tried blow up Allogators, I have an automatic pool cleaner, I have tried Duck off in fact I have tried everything above except for the Solar cover!!! So I am going to give that a go!!! It's horrible having to clean around the pool every second day due to all of the duck droppings!!! Not to mention the health hazard that the ducks faeces causes on humans!!! I have had a double lung transplant so for myself it's a serious concern as it is for all of you!!! These ducks are so arrogant lol they just keep coming in all the time as I live on acreage!!! I have lived out here for 40 yrs and never seen so many ducks before!!! It's crazy!!! It truly is upsetting to see the beautiful pool area spoiled by Duck Poo!!! My dog runs around the outside and that does the trick but only for about an hour!!! So I am going to give the Solar cover a go!!! Thanks for all of the information!!! It's fabulous living in sunny Queensland OZ but it's not so good not being able to use the pool due to the above reason or the health hazard for myself due to the transplant and not having an imbue system!!! So fingers crossed the cover will work!!! again thank you hodes xxx

The fence situation is the kink of the whole property, and is causing me the biggest grief right now. What you can't tell from the photo is that the pool is actually raised higher than the yard behind it, and there is approximately 10 feet behind/between the pool fence and the split rail fence that runs the perimeter of the yard. The lattice is largely there for privacy, as none of the pools in our area have fences for code. Neighborhood rules dictate that you can have a privacy fence around your pool, provided it's far enough back from the property line. (Where the split rail fence is) I want to do just what you're saying, but it would be ALOT of money right now. They'd basically have to come in and build a new retaining wall behind the pool, add fill dirt to bring the surface level with the existing pool deck to expanding the area (to allow for flowers and the like), and then we could fence around that. However, we would then be very close to the setback requirements. Arrgghhhhh....... Since we're so far over budget on the interior renovation, this project may have to wait until next year. :(

Dear Polar Princess, I am happy to read of your recent survivorship and a getting new lease on life. I think your oak cabinets look very well made and can be a star with some new accessories. Oak is a timeless, beautiful wood. Here are the changes I would try for minimal cost: 1) As has been mentioned numerous times: remove the stenciling & ivy to freshen the look. 2) If you can easily remove the light bridge over the sink and add molding to the top of the 2 cabinets where it connected, that will also modernize the look, as previous poster suggested, for not much money. 3) Backsplash: Provide Maximum sizzle and splash, which will transform the kitchen with a shimmering glass tile mosaic. See link below as example. Your area is not big, so you could pull this off for only $200 to $250 in materials. 4) Definitely bring in the brown leather bar stools you like or even something very modern in style as a contrast. 5) Counter tops: white laminate is not necessarily bad. In fact, if you add a shimmering glass backsplash that is a nice counterpoint to the white counters, you may find they are now more pleasing to you, without going to the expense of adding granite. You already know how easy to maintain your laminate counters are. You might jazz them up with some interesting place mats or update your centerpiece to be more in keeping with the brown leather & mosaics. 6) Window valence: maybe replace the lace look with something more tailored to complement the new backsplash and stools. 7) Wall paint: See how the backsplash changes the look and decide if you want to add wall color or not. 8) If you still yearn for SS appliances, check into changing out the front panels of the frig and dishwasher with SS. Don't think that is possible with the stove. I would really keep the bisque because they will look nice with the new backsplash as well. Also check out several of the Spectralight (with and without El Dorado), Shimmerfly (one is Honey Pearl)and others which might complement your adjacent room colors. Good luck with all your decisions. les917: I love your suggestion for the bathroom, especially the monogram towels. The monograming at the very least can help me with the battle of who left their towel on the floor. Their bathroom has white cabinets, white countertop and white floor tiles. There are so many different shades of white, what do you recommend? We really don't have the time to start and finish this project before school starts. DD works roughly 30 hours a week and has quite a bit of summer homework for her AP classes due the first day of school. I think tipcut is saying the tan coping is plastic and it's on top of the fading metal...looks like galvanized sheet metal? Unless money is the issue, remove it all and an upgrade to a current finish like stone or concrete sounds best. Otherwise, maybe use some sort of elastomeric deck coating application over a prepped surface better than prime/paint.

15 years ago we repainted our old aluminum siding. Everyone said it couldnt be done because back then the siding was so chalky. It took us a month because we both worked and only had the weekends. On a Friday night, we scrubbed the one side of the house with TSP. On Saturday and Sunday we painted 2 coats of paint on that side (one coat each day). At the time we used the best Benjamin Moore exterior latex paint they had. It lasted for 10 years until the new homeowners added on and resided the house. So with the proper cleaning, and in your case I would buy a spray on primer, I think you can successfully repaint the metal and cement and be able to get quite a few years of enjoyment out of that old decking. Worst case senario, it fakes off and you replace it. I bet it works out fine.

Success in repainting something like this is all in the prep. You need to get as much of the old finish off as possible. On the metal, first you need to clean the surface. It looks like the existing finish is flaking off, if so then you'll need to get it all off of there. Try solvent-wiping, if that doesn't work try steel wool (be sure to clean the coping very well afterwards, any steel wool fragments left behind will rust). After cleaning it you'll want to apply an etching primer, then paint it with a metal paint.

For the plastic, you can get pretty good finish results with Krylon Fusion (it's intended for plastic). If it were me I would pull all the plastic off to prep and paint it separately. That'll leave you with a lot less masking to be done.

Just as an FYI please very careful when removing old paint. If you scrape it you could very well put lead into the air. Not good for you to inhale!

Thats not plastic it's aluminum and you cannot buy that coping anymore so be very carefull with it....
