Scrap-booking or genealogy suggestion

Posting here as the scrapbooking forum is slow.
Since I collect stamps and do other crafts, I try to mix/match/use products where ever.
I am putting some very old newspaper clippings in a book, I wanted to put them in a protective cover. Then I thought of my stamp supplies. SO-- I use the clear mounts ( not the black backed ones) to put stamps in and because they come in all lengths and widths, found that the newspaper clippings fit. You just put them in a mount, lick the glue on the back and put in the book. Easy to do, easy to change, easy to see, and no damage to the notice. You can get them from any stamp dealer, on line, and most collectors would be glad to give you the left overs. Wish I could post a picture, but I don't know how. Any one interested I can send a sample of the mount.

Are the mounts acid-free, Marie? I'm guessing they are, since collectors would want to preserve their stamps.

I spent a couple of days last week putting newspaper clippings into acid-free 8.5 x 11" clear plastic sleeves that fit into a 3-ring binder. In many case I used scrapbooking tape to mount them on card stock before placing them in the sleeve.

The clippings are all reviews of performances by my paternal grandparents, both singers. All are over 100 years old, and resided in a decorative cardboard box all this time. They are beyond fragile. I scanned some of the most interesting before filing them in the binder.

Good tip, Marie. I've seen stamp mounts on eBay.

I believe that newsprint is acidic. For archival storage, the clipping should be neutralized before mounting. I was at a genealogy class tonight and learned there exits pens for testing papers for being either acidic or basic. It does no good to store an object in safe sleeves if the object itself is acidic.

They can be pieced together (sewing straight lines) to make cusions for your porch, bed,ect. Pick all of the colors that match your kitchen and make a patch work table cloth and dont forget napkins. I made a mattress cover using scraps. Placemats for the table. Pot holders, aprons, vallances for windows. Table runners. Rip them up and make a rag rug. Donate leftovers to a nursing home that has a quilting club. Baby quilts, recover small lamp shades. Tea Pot cozys. Cover Books. Christmas stockings. Lawn furniture covers. Have fun!!!!! susie

Hi Barbara! My fiance, Thomas, is infantry with the United States Marine Corps. I'm *always* looking for military SB page ideas. I hope more people respond to your post with suggestions. I don't have an entire album devoted to his military career but I do have a few pages. I've linked them below so you can view them. There are more samples of military layouts on Dmarie.com (they are categorized for you). I find a lot of military patterned paper a little too "cartoon-like" for my tastes so I use a lot of neutral coloured cardstock (i.e. various browns and muted greens). However, Paper Pizzazz (Hot off the Press) puts out a book of military patterned papers. A friend of mine gets various military logos/images from bumper stickers (etc.) she gets at the PX (safely buffered away from her photos of course). I have a BUNCH of military poetry I've gathered from the net (most of it is husband/wife themed but they might inspire you still) -- if you or anyone else is interested, email me at leahtommy@hotmail.com and I'll be happy to share them. DH's aunt was Frances Geary, Mrs. John Richard Geary. She was very close freinds with Adele Hankey. We still keep in contact with Adele once in a while. Frances was born Frances Gertrude C. 21 Aug. 1916. Married John Richard Geary 22 Sept. 1945. Died 29 November 2001. There are many pictures we assume were of friends and their families and LOTS of newspaper clippings, some whole pages, maybe whole papers. Frances was probably born in either Walnut, KS or St. Paul, MN. I don't currently have that info. Some of the names I listed above are in the pictures I have, but to our knowlege. per her sister, they are not related to us. Tami

I also get sucked into genealogy, running down leads and finding the unexpected. Here's a short story about my ggrandmother Ella. In 1904, she had 6 young children (including 2 year old twins, one of which was my grandmother). For some reason I have not been able to discover, her husband died. Several months later, she was "compelled," a newspaper story said, to surrender three of the children as she couldn't provide for them. The article was called, "A Mother's Sad Thanksgiving." The twins were split up, each going to one of their deceased father's sisters. Now, here's where it gets REALLY interesting. Apparently ggrandmother was living with a gentleman who was nearly 30 years older than her, keeping his house, I assume. I found a news story telling of, as it said, "A Dastardly Plot" by a young man and 2 of his friends who were quite fond of my ggrandmother. They conspired to kill the man she was living with, shooting both him and his dog. The man did not die, and subsequent newspaper stories claimed the shooter was convicted of the deed BY THE DOG, who growled and was very aggressive toward the shooter. LOL!!! Anyway, to make a long story short, ggrandmother married the older gentleman. 7 months later, she gave birth to another child. I remember ggrandmother Ella - she died when I was 10 or so. And she remained active in my grandmother's life, even though she didn't raise her. She was quite feisty and full of life. Now I know at least SOME of the rest of her story. I am looking for still more on her. How every interesting to learn these things!

One of my duties when I worked in the Philadelphia Library was to maintain the clipping file. Every day I read a handful of local papers and clipped articles that might be useful to our patrons or staff. These papers only had a local circulation and were too small to be indexed in any of the major published indexes.

This was back in the 70's before we had a computer on every desk and cubby. Retrieving a newspaper or periodical article meant locating the microfiche or microcard and using the appropriate readers.

Newspapers in their original form were too fragile for long term storage unless in an archival setting - controlled temperature and humidity, light, dust and pollution free etc.

In other words it was a royal P.I.A. - Any clipping that we deemed important was photocopied onto permanent paper - paper that was acid free, lignin free, and tear resistant.

I guess I'll scan more of them then. The scanning worked well, and I could even print them on card stock, or heavy bond. Thanks for the information!
