I think it will work beautifully!I like to mix designs in a taseful way. It shows creativity and thinking outside the box. I love the red and white floor in the mud room. It will look great next to the wood floor. I do like the pendants you selected even better than the ones in the picture. I think your bungalow will look charming and tasteful.

I completely agree with Gracie. Your schoolhouse pendants actually seem much more in keeping with the style than those pictured in the inspiration photo. And I love, love, love the flooring you're wanting for your mudroom. Perfect vintage touches. Personally, I don't really care for homes that are period down to the last little detail. That's fine -- for a museum -- but this is your home, and should most definitely reflect your personality. Will you post pics when the house is complete?

I just have one word of advice about the flooring. I hope you're not planning on red and white checkerboard. Or ANYTHING and white checkerboard.

These floors look great in photos but are SO frustrating to keep clean.

I like the s.h. pendants with white cabinets. But if I were doing stained, I would go with something warmer like the amber shade pendants shown in the photo, because I see an opportunity for a gorgeous glazed color tile backsplash.

But then again, if you are going for the s.h. lights, are you thinking about white subway tiles for the backspash? I guess it could look okay then, but I think that you would be missing some really great options.

IMO bungalow and cottage style are pretty closely related, and if you're not restoring a period house, elements of both styles can blend nicely in the same home. Publications like "Cottages & Bungalows" and "Cottage Living" show examples of that being done all the time.

"Cottage" has a lot of interpretations. It goes from one end that is flouncy, country, shabby chic all the way to a sparse Shaker style. It sounds to me that the things you envision in your home are closer to the latter, which IMHO, looks appropriate in the style home you're building.

I have all periods of furniture in my 1923 colonial revival house, esp. my dining room. My table, chairs and china cabinet are Duncan Phyfe(Craigslist!). The upright grand piano we refinished is from 1911. The Sheraton ? chest/highboy is from the late 1700s- early 1800s made by an ancestor in Newfane Vermont, my grandmother refinished it in the 40s, and a Victorian marble top washstand locally made with white marble from the quarry in Marble Hill, Cockeysville MD also a family piece. The wood tones are similar and I enjoy them every day. I enjoy the Karastan oriental rug that is in there too, on the original oak with walnut ribbon inlay floor. All of these things say "me". I guess I walk my own path for somethings.I think they work together and if they don't that's cool by me. BTW your house will be lovely Sue

We have a 1918 bungalow. We have checkerboard marmoleum clicks in rust and light beige...we love them. And yes you have to take extra care keeping the lighter colors clean. I'd do them again, though - ours adjoin white oak floors that aren't stained and we really like the look. We have corner windows like you, but we have 3 on each side. We went with Arroyo Craftsman Glasgow pendants and flush mounts and ours have tan glass, but I think schoolhouse will be work well. Our cabinets are quarter sawn oak, stained a traditional mission stain.

I think you are heading in the right direction. I like the house style very much.

Honestly, it looks like it's going to be a cute house, but I think the soffits are a huge mistake. If you like that closed in feel...put cabinetry up there, but soffits are the type of thing that people spend money to remove, not to build in. It's a constant post in the kitchen forum...how do I get rid of these soffits!

As to the styles, they're all complementary, and yes they're mixed, but that's ok :) Even if I lived in the home we want to purchase, I'd not try to use one style and one style only in the home, but instead pick appropriate complementary styles that suit the place. But I umm wouldn't add soffits :oP

Re: checkerboard floors
It seems I'm constantly having a mental battle between what I like and what I'm going to be willing to maintain through the years. (This will be our forever home.) I usually come down on the side of easy maintenance, but I might go the other way on this issue. I WANT those floors! :) I like the red, but my husband isn't wild about it. If I can't bring him around, we might go with green/white or gold/cream squares. I think we're going to use gold and grayed green paint colors, so those options would blend rather than making a statement. I'm okay with that.

Re: lighting
I'm still undecided. I'm glad to hear that the schoolhouse pendants work, but the suggestions to consider lighting with amber toned shades also make sense. This is another pic from my lighting idea file. The iron-look finish and warmer toned shade would complement the Arts & Crafts look.

kec01, it sounds like you have fabulous taste! It's a lot like mine. :) I looked up the Arroyo Craftsman Glasgow lighting. That's the look I want for the exterior lights. For the interior, I prefer something a little softer in form.

Some of the other factors influencing my decision are the trimwork and the backsplash and countertop materials. We're probably going to go with white trimwork and stained built-ins. If the trimwork is white, then I was thinking about using white subway tiles with an accent border to try to tie things together a bit. If the trimwork is stained, then I think I'll probably go with glazed tiles in a muted color. (We're thinking alike, paint_chips.)

Re: soffits
I've seen those posts! I can understand the argument against them; they really aren't a good use of space. However, I haven't found an alternative that I'm really satisfied with that still gives me the boxed-in feel. I've considered a framed in display shelf or cabinetry above the windows. Those are still options, but I haven't found an inspiration picture with that look that hasn't felt too 'busy' for me. It's SO difficult for me to visualize how things are going to look. I need a picture! That's where these boards have been so helpful. How did people do their building/remodeling research before the internet was available?!

Many, many thanks for the kind words about our plans. I will gladly share our progress along the way. We're very early in the process. We've worked with an architect to develop our plans and are now getting bids from builders. I'm trying to work out all of these details now, so we can get them into the contract and avoid change orders later.

Your plans are really nice. I understand why you'd want to close in an area (re: soffits) in your kitchen, as an alcove makes it feel a bit cozier. Personally, I'd recommend you get more light by adding transoms in the corner (do you think that's because it's what I did?) If you tell your architect you'd like the feeling of an inglenook, you might be able to add this without doing the soffits. We kept the old ceiling elevation in our BP, and raised it in the kitchen to create that feeling. You can see the pictures on My Page.

Thanks for your nice comments, gala. Try painting and staining some scrap wood before you commit to one or the other for your trim. You'll be able to get a better feel for what things will look like. We did that and ended up staying with all stained, but our trim is a different color stain than our cabinets.

HI, I think the soffet question might depend on several other elements of the design, such as how large the room is (where they would help define or make an area closer) or if they tie some elements together (like a beam coming across to a wall). We ended up with them on two walls of our design for I think good reasons, although I tore them all out of my current kitchen to open it up more.

On the light fixtures, the first ones seem to busy for a cottage/craftsman look. I've seen the Schoolhouse fixtures used with stained wood cabinetry and windows and they look fine - more casual though. The third fixtures would also look good, and possibly dress the kitchen up a bit more.

I hope that other people will post pictures as this is the look we are going for too. The quick cheap way to find more photos with soffets, or taller cabinets, or niches for storage are kitchen cabinet catalogs which I found at Home Depot for free - four different brands so a lot of different room views and configurations to look at.

Gala, Sorry about that. Don't know what I was thinking or doing. Here's the real link...it was taken before the last bit of crown molding was up put and before we moved in. The paint color in the picture doesn't look anything like it really looks.
