Pool and spa lights on dimmers have gone crazy

Hi all,

I have not been around much as the pool has been working pretty well but a few months ago, I noticed that the lights on the pool are not working correctly.

I have 2 500w lights in the pool and 1 100w light in the spa. They are both on dimmers that work with my Jandy Aqualink RS8. They have been working fine for about 4 years (we really don't use the lights that much) but found that both of them are erratic now. I can from the controller inside the house select any power level - 25 -> 100% and the chances a light will come on are about 1 in 10. From the spa switch, the spa light will come on to whatever power it seems to want, if it comes on. Sometimes the light will be on in the spa, but the OneTouch controller will indicate it is off.

Called the builder and they suggested making sure that it knows the dimmers are present. It does, but still won't work correctly. For the pool, when the lights come on, they both come on, so the bulbs are not burnt out. Everything was fine until this winter when they both went out.

Any ideas on what to check? I think it strange that both relays would go out at the same time....

Check the power. If they share the same breaker...

My best guess is you have a wire or connection somewhere that has become loose or corroded. It would definitely explain the erratic symptoms.

Applewood Annie, bless your heart for remembering me. I'm still around, though since I lost my DH last summer my time for checking in on GW has not been the same. Used to be that I popped in every single day - sometimes more than once, but I've no time for that any more, and not so much time for my gardens either I'm sad to say. I've tried to make a promise to myself to photograph the gardens more this year, even if only to help me some day remember the beauty I created around a home I no longer can view as being the place I'll stay the rest of my life, sigh. Sorry to hear about your health problems. What a terrible time you have had! I hope you have some beautiful roses anyway this year - and better days ahead. It's fun to see so many people pop in, but sad when I see the names of some very wonderful people I met here over the last 12 years and now so many of them are lost to us all. That's the nature of this way of relating to people. We only see a small window on someone's life and they can close it and turn their backs at any time, leaving us in the dark as to what happened. That's the trouble; never having the end of the stories...

Table lighting driving us crazy!! Help needed

Thanks, dim4fun. The table is used for all meals but it also is used for grading papers, paying bills and other tasks. Having good light is important for a variety of reasons so I hope to have some flexibility in lighting this area. Just a central chadelier doesn't seem to be enough, so I think we would like to use the downlights at the ends as you suggest. Now, if we can just figure out where to place them. If we use recessed cans straight down, where should they be placed--near the ends of the table or pulled in closer to the central fixture? Other cans in the room will be 6-inch deep black alzak cones. Would these be appropriate to use as the two end fixtures or should we use something smaller over the table? I want the central fixture to be something that will light everyone's faces, but how low do I need to go to make that happen? Our ceilings are not quite 8 feet high. I would prefer to keep a fixture closer to the ceiling to avoid blocking the view of art on the wall behind the table. If I keep it close to the ceiling, however, will I lose the benefit of lighting people's faces? People vs tasks vs artistic aesthetics--we need to find a happy medium! We need something that will give us enough light to complete our tasks (eating, reading the newspaper, grading term papers, paying bills, etc.). At the same time, we want a pleasant place for the people (flattering light without glare). Creating an artistic view from across the room is the least important variable, but it would be nice. Well, now we are just waiting for the Archetictural Review Board to review our plans. The ARB is kind-of a joke because we only have 3 houses in our neighborhood. Anyway, we went with a 7.5' spa. I though 7' was too small and 8' was too big. I "borrowed" some of all of your suggestions and ideas and went with all stone surround added a step, all Pentair and 400,000 btu. Still trying to decide on 7', but the ARB does not care about that. Thank you for all of your help! I'll post more pictures once we get started.

I need light. Over the past couple of years that need has increased dramatically. I don't know how old you are, but I'm told it happens as we age. My old kitchen had one ceiling fixture with two 60 watt bulbs, a small can over the sink, and the light from the OTR MW. I constantly had shadows everywhere and it drove me BONKERS!! I had to add a couple of lamps under the uppers to help, but it still wasn't enough. I move fast in the kitchen. I cook a lot and am over-ambitious with what I try to make. Consequently, I'm in a hurry. With kids fussing around left and right, toys flying through the kitchen, cats pestering me for food, my stomach growling because I'm hungry, and Children's Songs From Around the World blaring in the other room, I worry about my very sharp knives relieving me of a much-needed finger because I have trouble really seeing where its landing. Like I said, I want maximum light when I'm going through this daily battle. When it's over, I'm happy to turn the lights down a bit. Other dimly lit rooms in my house bother me too. As does my MIL's house where she insists that its mood lighting to have a single lamp from the family room light up a dark dining room during a meal.

Scott, I assume it is OK because the circuit is not tripped and the GFCI outlet that is on the same circuit seems to be working fine. Is there something else on the circuit I should check? Chris

Assume nothing. A loose connection won't trip a breaker. It could very well be a loose connection or broken wire that makes when the vibrations are right.

So, is there anything to worry about if I turn the power off at the main circuit breaker panel (to the whole Aqualink unit) and open up it up?

If I can't find any wires that are broken, I guess I will have to call the builder but since they don't like to come out unless they have to it should be worth a look. Just take notice around the dimmer relays?

Well, I turned off the power and checked the wires I could see and such. I found a couple ground screws that were not that tight and tightened them up.

The spa light seems to turn on now, but it likes 75% best and never 100%. Both pool lights I guess were worse than I thought and don't seem to want to turn on at all. Guess both relays could have died at the same time (??) Maybe I will have the pool co come out and if the relays are bad, just have them put in the old, standard relays for now. I would prefer to upgrade to LED sometime anyways.

Well, just to close the loop on the thread, the PB found that both relays were burnt out for whatever reason. I just had them put in the standard relays that I had sitting around.
