Trying to learn hoe to do this: an old quilt (when I was still a pretty new quilter: called "Rhythmic stripes".

Adding according to the soil test recommendations will give you a good, general level of nutrients which will start your plants off well. Most of the nutrients are fairly stable in the soil and won't disappear over the summer, other than uptake by the plants. Nitrogen, however, is fairly easy to leach out of the ground with excess moisture and can gasify under some conditions. Your recommendations for a general garden may need some adjustments depending on the favorite nutrients of the plants you are growing. As mentioned, corn loves nitrogen, and you would likely want to side dress with some additional nitrogen when the corn is about 2 feet high. Corn, however, isn't the only nitrogen lover although it is extremely transparent in telegraphing its nutrient status so shortages become quickly and easily visible. Pretty much everything other than legumes (which use bacteria to make their own) love nitrogen too, and even legumes can respond to nitrogen. Watch your plants around 6-8 weeks after planting and if there are any signs of potential shortage or weaker/slower growth, then side dress with some additional nitrogen. After mid summer, let the plants use up what is available in the soil. You don't want to fertilize so heavily that you leave a lot of available nitrogen in the soil at the end of the season where it can leach to groundwater or anywhere else.

It's just the standard milky way oval mold....i just fill it up Â½ way instead of all the way, & thanks for the complements...... and, yes, Jill, sleep is overated...at least at night... LOL!! Also, sorry the picure is so big...i did re size it, guess just not small enough. Hazel

Irina lot of good info from you. I do appreciate it. There is always something to learn. I had no idea LE's were THAT unstable! And yes $1 now can hardly buy a leaf! lol ! You mentioned variegation going down. Usually natural for this time of year. But the weird thing is,,,,,my Opt. Modesty is going in the opposite direction. It is more variegated now than it was in the cooler winter temps! It will be due for fertilizer in about a week when I clean/water all wick reservoirs. Then everyone will get fertilizer again. I give fertilizer for about two times in a row, then I give plain water. She sure is beautiful! It does have some green, but not very much compared to the beautiful variegated colors! Also setting flower buds again. I think she is just showing off. As far as collecting a certain category of violets, I am more of an "all over the map" person. You know about my infamous Wish List ! I acknowledge the instability of violets. That won't change. But think about it. No matter what I comment on I do still grow/buy/trade for them!!!!! And I would love to have Amythest! Some day maybe!!!! Rosie

I'm a lurker here, posting once in a great while. I just learned to post these pix, 1st time, am very excited about it.

I hope to add some more pix in the next week or so as practice in doing this. Clearly, I don't have the link part right!!!

Another oldie but goodie (approx. 15" wide x 12" high):

Very special as I batiked this myself using Procion dyes on silk & then quilted it: 28 yrs. ago. Was a sample for a wedding quilt for friends which I decided not to make for them after all.

The grey/green had been a darker, brighter forest green but in the intervening yrs. it faded; interestingly the earth tones faded much less than the grey/green.

Another older quilt, about 12-15 yrs. old when I was teaching myself to quilt.

Sorry for the less than great picture quality, was taken w/ disposable camera.
