Suggestions for Paint Colors - Photos

Hi All, I'm back for much needed advice from those who know best.

I plan to relocate to a condo my Mom left me in Scottsdale in a few months and need help choosing paint colors. I plan on doing a complete gut renovation and replacing all the furniture but will not be in a position to do anything other than paint and replace the countertops until I sell my coop here which might take a while. Right now I'm stuck with what's there.

Anyway, I'm looking for suggestions for paint colors for the kitchen cabinets and walls. I want to have the cabinets painted a creamy white and the walls in the kitchen and living room a slightly deeper shade of white or other neutral color. Right now it looks as if everything has been painted the same stark white. I love white but this is even a bit much for me. lol

Any suggestions would really be appreciated.

I'd suggest a deeper, warmer beige. Maybe like Stone House? Perhaps something even warmer? I'd just avoid gray.

How about something like Ellen Kennon's Light Terracotta? Something with warmth and color and punch. You could see this color using her color visualizer.

Samples are super important. Your money will be well spent. As all white kitchen owners will attest, lighting, other elements in your kitchen, even things outside your house over which you have no control (e.g., vegetation) will influence how your white looks at various times of the day. Using foam board is the easiest way to get a large portable sample. Put it somewhere in your kitchen and leave it for at least 24 hours. Then move it to a different location. I was fortunate to have my two finalists (BM Cloud White and Simply White) on two of my old doors, so I had the right context. At some point you have to stop comparing colors. If you have two or three you like, separate them. You need to stop comparing colors and see how each look as they stand alone.

I prefer the 1st, too. I am finding that rather than beige, people are choosing darker tones of beige, telling themselves they're "doing color." [LOL] It's still beige! :) Your room is dramatic, and with that subtle but bold color it'll really cozy/warm up your space. Plus, if you're keeping your love seat? I think it should look good with it. Beautiful room you have.

Blue does not have to be blah or depressing, even with only indirect natural light like you describe. With the light wheat counters and the red oak floors, you have warmth that can support a cooler color. In fact, cooler may give better balance than a tan. I'm biased, because my walls are blue/green/gray. Palladian Blue is one of the samples I tried on the walls. I ended up with Quiet Moments (also BM). My DD 11 described it as "cozy" of all things... not a word I would have chosen, but definitely not blah or cold. The green tones give it warmth. It's a very welcoming color but beyond definition as blue or green or gray, which is what I love most about it. I'm not a wallpaper person (and you said you are removing wallpaper) but bmore's suggestions sound lovely as well. Blackcats' color combination sounds intriguing and bright ... I've seen the lavender and blue combination and loved it, never seen the yellow with it on walls like that.

One of the best tips I've seen on Houzz when trying to match a natural stone piece is to use a color gauge to pick out colors within the slab that you like and then get the paint color matched to that. Here's an example of one such product, the Color Muse: Color Muse Home Website.

Myredhouse, Thanks for the suggestion. I tried to find photos of Stone House and some that I found looked great and others looked little darker than what I'm looking for. I'll keep this on my list for when I paint samples.

Deltabreeze, Thanks for the advice. I like Light Terracotta but am not sure I'm brave enough. I have to admit that I'm a little afraid (actually, make that "very afraid"- lol) of color on the walls, especially when the area is small and there's not much light. I purchased from Ellen before and she is such a pleasure to deal with and very helpful. Actually, I just asked for her suggestions and am waiting to hear back from her. My guess is that she will also suggest Light Terracotta. lol

I was just browsing the kitchen section and came across Redroze's kitchen. http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/load/kitchbath/msg030117443299.html I know the current decor style (if you can even call it that-lol) in the condo does not compare in any way, shape or form but I love everything about her kitchen and living area and was wondering if the paint colors would work in my space - BM Chantilly Lace on the cabinets and Natural Cream on the walls.

When it comes to paint colors I get so confused and normally just stick to shades of white. Maybe by the time I get around to actually renovating and buying furniture, I'll be a little braver . lol
