OT-over the edge-cable TV

I cannot believe I just did what I did. I went into the cable office to pay my bill, my whole $9 cable bill (we have "economy", no frills, never anything on)....I upgraded...yuppers...me. My kids begged me for years to upgrade. I wouldn't do it. It's not worth it. Wanna know what put me over the edge???? NASCAR....yup. Too many races were on TNT and we didn't have it. Drove me crazy. My DH will probably have me committed tonight. I was SO against this all these years. What a splurge! hehehehe...just thought I would share. OH..and now I get the food network, and HGTV...and...who knows what else, TNT!!! hehehehehehehehehe

So, if you don't hear from me, I'll either be at Midcoast Hospital in P200 or Riverview Rehab.....I bet they have cable too!

For years we had 'peasant vision', but about three years ago, Mom finally got cable.

I'm amazed at the fact that I watch like four channels... and that it's totally worth it. I'm hooked on the history channel, discovery channel, the learning channel and... tv land.

I think we have WAY too many channels - we've upgraded to digital - amazing how much useless stuff is on there that we're paying for!! However, in order to get what DH likes to watch, and a few things I enjoy, we have to get several "packages" that include alot we'd never watch. Wish we could fine tune it to just pick and choose about 10 channels out of the 100+ we can get! Grrrrrrrr...

Ginny I just went through this so I feel your confusion. Plasma is the best viewing particularly for 50' or above since the new generation has remedied much of the original problems. Reflection glare is now their biggest concern, and no they are not on there way out. LED has a better black surrounding the dot matrix. For most viewers they will not be able to tell the difference. When you have time put LCD versus plasma in Google. Be prepared to read a lot. Rely on manufacturer reliability first not model number. A lot of well meaning people are going to tell you about dpi, refresh rate, along with other product specifications and features. Unless you are an electronics whiz or geek many of the offered features are not needed.Your research will tell you about the specifications. I suggest you do all the research independently, including manufacturer's websites and purveyor websites. There is a lot of explanations and definitions available. Then when you do have specific questions seek assistance with the answers. If you go to others prematurely the well meaning opinions tend to just cloud the issue even more. Finally, if you can purchase or borrow a Consumer Reports 2011 Buying Guide it will provide a lot of independent information. After all was said and done I purchased their recommended 46" "best buy". After a month I have no complaints or second thoughts. If you wish to know what I specifically bought feel free to ask. I didn't want to share my purchase choice without permission.

It's good to understand your skill limitations, although its really not too complicated. Maybe your electrictian can easily do it for you or provide the necessary info so you can do it confidentally. Although grounding the system is technically required by the National Electric Code (NEC), which I think every state has adopted to some degree, I have never seen a new install that meets these requirements. Unfortunately, you would probably be "rolling the dice" again trying to get a DirecTV sub contractor to do it correctly. In the end, it is probably wiser just to make sure its done correctly yourself. Keep educating yourself and you'll save yourself a bunch of time, frustration, and money. I once heard the qoute, "Contractors make money by not doing things they are suppose too". Unfortunately, this is the case far too often as contractors are squeezed to improve efficiency.

linelle -- I do understand where you're coming from, but for how we live etc, it's better to not bring the piano next to the kitchen table. If we were all adults, I think it would be a good choice. But my kids are 5 and 9, and they have little friends etc. It's our only kitchen/dining table and the farthest I could move it away is 2 feet from the piano...the piano juts out more than the buffet; it's a shallow buffet, 17" deep, and the back is finished, but the piano is 24" deep. So in pictures I do think it would look better, but in practice it would put the dining table right in the middle of the doorway into the kitchen, which would probably not be a good choice. As far as conflict over who uses what and when, that's never been a problem. DH may be stubborn in some ways, but he's a considerate person to live with. graywings -- over the fireplace would mean looking up to watch tv. I like your idea of in front of the fireplace, I am going to run that one by DH. As much as we do like the fp, most days where we live you aren't allowed to burn anything anyway. I can't remember the last time we had a real fire, I have candles in there that I light -- creates a nice mood. You're probably right about keeping just one color on the wall. coll_123 -- I like the ladder shelf idea too. When I get closer to being able to re-do the room I'll look for something like that. My DH said that he really wants a product that is meant to hold components though, so that may be a hard sell. Karenseb -- yes the tv would be too high if over the fp -- the mantle is over 5' tall. Really don't want to mess with changing that, especially if we may move in a few years. k9Arlene -- thanks for the vote of confidence :-) I hope I responded to everyone, I've really appreciated all the ideas and thoughts, especially the critical eyes -- it's challenging to think outside the constraints after living here 13 years. Our home is small and modestly sized, it's not in a hot neighborhood where people do awesome (ie expensive) custom things to make the small spaces work (and if they do, it's often at a loss if/when they sell). I have other outstanding home projects to complete, but DH agreed that once they were finished we could look into re-doing the living room -- like paint and the shelving/layout, everything. It might not be until after Christmas, but I'm feeling so blessed to have such a great start from all of you. Melanie

:) Beagles, I bought a nice plastic box for my touch screen stereo controller so I could use it from the tub. :) It's not the kind that you can get in waterproof form. I think they make those yellow toss 'em in the pool TV remotes though... Weedmeister, I love the active backsplash idea!! Not so much for the fishing shows, but can you just imagine? The recipe over the stove, Julia in the corner explaining how to fillet the squab and not lose any of the precious meet, the illustration from www.howtobutchersquab.info right next to her, the evening's menu with timer reminders on the other side, and the guest list with phone numbers, table arrangement, and allergies, at the other end. All controllable by voice or gesture. I totally love it!!! Marcolo, the TVs themselves are probably pretty expensive (mine were gifts so I don't know for sure), but the frame part can be done pretty easily if you're willing to compromise a little. You build a box frame on the wall, surrounding the TV (and run the wires through the wall so they're not all hangin' down), and then you cover the box with your painting or mirror. There are different ways to do it. You can make bifold doors that tuck out of the way and paint a pretty picture on them, you can hinge a proper framed art piece so long as it's not too heavy--I've seen this done where it dropped down and on the wall side of the frame, instead of brown paper or linen, there was a rack for the controllers and some pieces of the surround sound. I've also seen where the art only goes up when there's company, so they just have a double angled slat top edge/hanger and the framed piece sets on the floor behind an end table otherwise. I like having the ugly black TV on the island. It's right by the seating for A/V company when one is alone, or shucking peas (or, more likely, clipping artichokes), and I have it on a little slate turntable so it's easy to turn it to face the cook. Often, I'll turn on the news while I'm prepping or something and not even bother turning it because I'm looking at my work. Yup. Really functional. But no disguising it. The HDMI wire does help though. Just that and the power cord, rather than spaghetti. And the thing has Bluetooth and, I think, wi-fi, so if the stereo were allowed internet privileges (it's been hinting, and it has a birthday coming), the TV could get Hulu or Netflix without a computer hookup. 'Course, then my refrigerator would start calling home to Germany and trying to get my phone to talk my ipod into turning the car against me.

We have digital too (had to get it to get the cable internet) and with like 120 channels there is still not much to watch. 12 of them are PPV, 8 are NASCAR in-car PPV, 3 home shopping, 2 local access, 15 of the movie channels are HDTV and duplicate 15 of the regular movie channels. We watch HGTV, tv land, History, Discovery, DIY, Public TV and local news. But we can't get them without all the others. They have it rigged I think. We do at least get a Sr citizens discount.

he's home, I told him.....you would have thought I told him we won the lottery! hahaha...and he did check to see if I was running a temperature. THEN he asked if I would make a potato salad for a BBQ at work Friday....usually not a problem, they love my potato salad. So I ask what the occasion was....one of the office girls is having a baby. I slugged him..not once, four times! AGGHHHH!!!!! I coulda made her a quilt you dingbat!!!
So, might try to squeeze it on before Friday....think I have a top made already actually....*SIGH*...whatya gonna do with them?

Well there still will not be anything to watch. We must have 15 sports channels and we do not watch sports, can yo believe that. The older I get the less TV I watch.

Kit, Those are our favorite channels too, along with National Geographic, the Food Network, and BBC TV.

I want to ask...are you all bugged by an info-mercial marathon that goes on every night on dozens of your cable channels? Out here, if you have insomnia or work nights, better have Tevo or a whole lot of DVD's, because when you turn on the TV after midnight or 1:00 am, the only thing on channel after channel are infomercials. They run on some channels until 6:30 or 7:00 am. Now...the way I calculate it, I'm getting charged for TV time when there's nothing being broadcast but commercials. That's just not right.

Sigh...OK...climing down off of my soapbox now...
