Moisture Shield Deck?

I found local lumbar mill that sells IPE which we are considering for our deck. In the same conversation I also expressed an interest in composite. I was told this lumber mill used to carry Trex and TimberTech, but they have since stopped. Now they carry Moisture Shield (see link). This co now encapsulates the wood particles and this eliminates the black specs apparently common in composite.

I searched the board but cannot find any comments on this particular brand. Does anyone have any insight on Moisture Shield?

I went thru the Moisture Shield plant over the weekend, a local sales rep and the national rep walked me through

Now keep in mind I am not a fan of composite butttttt I have to say I am impresed.

1 they use white oak/red oak flower thats left with long fibers, harder to work with but make for a stronger board

2 For the green freeks they dont toss anything, they have a green stamp from you guys and all the workers have shirts to prove it. Of course there is always the energy cost/transport to make the stuff but thats another story.

3. Very high grade quality control

4 Much time is spent with the encapsulate thing the longer fibers require a lot of care. Longer fibers= more time in the mixer.

5 and probley the most important is how they cool the stuff down, this is a big deal. They dont just hit it with water, I have always thought this was just asking for failure and trex has proved that. Hit it with water on the truck in 30 min, air/natural cool like the MS boys takes 7 hours. You cant belive how they do it I had to sign off talking about the details but those boys are really puting some $ in the process with some very good results.

Side Note>> They are coming out with a texas cedar product pretty quick that I my very own hate composite self would like to put down.John

I'm getting ready to have some composite decks installed using Moisture Shield. The boards are designed to be attached through the sides with a special tool instead of screwed in from the top. Does anybody have any experience with this type of installation for Moisture Shield products?

I've played with many finishes for Ipe and I haven't seen one yet that is "virtually maintenance free". Even the newer "nano" sealers that say they will last 5 years don't even come close. I don't like Deckmaster for Ipe or any other hardwood where you fasten underneath. I'd much prefer using the CAMO system, I think it will be much more stable. On your pricing, hard to tell since we don't know how he's breaking it down (wood dimension, how much he's charging for the wood vs. labor, if he's upcharging the materials, etc.). There are plenty of reputable dealers out there that have been mentioned on this site many times, including Advantage, eFloor, East Teak, Everlasting, Monteverde, take your pick, just look at the total quote, not the LF price since you will have freight involved and the price will change based on how long you want the boards to be, etc.

I have a saltwater pool built in 2006. I have tumbled travatine as coping and am concerned with the salt damaging the stone over time. I want to seal with something that will enhance the color but not be slippery. Saw that NPT sells these two products specifically for this purpose but wanted to know if folks have good experience (how long it lasts, does it make the surface slippery, etc?) using this before I make a purchase.

Thanks @yardvaark - very helpful. Yes, there’s room along the lot lines to plant tall trees - we will definitely plan on doing that. I like the idea of privacy screens on the deck itself. However, we are using MoistureShield deck material and I’m not sure if this can also be used for screening or if we’d have to get a different material for the sides. The back facing railing will be cords.
