OT- question for anyone near Seminole, OK

This is SOOO off topic, but hoping my quilting friends in Oklahoma might have some information.

We are looking at buying a dog from a breeder in Seminole, Oklahoma and wanted to know if any of you have heard anything good - or bad - about these folks. The name of their kennel is Herddogies and they are from Seminole, OK.

The pups are miniature australian shepherds and it's a big monetary investment - plus the expense of either driving to Oklahoma from Colorado to pick the dog up or flying the dog here. The dog we are looking at is sooo cute ...

We looked at some puppies in Missouri when we were traveling through there and felt really uncomfortable with the breeder we went to there.

If you know anything about them, please let me know!

Hey Sue. I don't know anything about this breeder but have you tried the BBB? Maybe they would have something on file about them. Or maybe look up a local vet's number online or somehow. A vet would probably know something. Wish I could help cause it's a big thing to buy a dog, especially one that costs a lot.

Hi Sue, I don't know anything about your breeder either but I'll tell you what we did before we bought our dog from a breeder in CA. We asked to see the pedigree of the parent dogs, whether any dogs in the lineage had won any shows or trials, whether the pup would have a hip xray or any other procedures done before being shipped to us, and if they were trainers as well as breeders.

I am really surprised by some of the answers on here. They seem to be varied as opinions on future weather patterns. Someone even said concrete is "lime, water and aggregate"? I hope to clarify statements like these. Let me pre-emptively state that my occupation is as a Technical Representative for a large Concrete and Cement packaging Corporation. I also serve on two Technical Committees that write specifications on Cement. I will try to keep this response in Layman's terms, so it is easily understood for all that read this article. Cement is derived from taking ground Limestone and then kilning it at very high temperatures to produce a finished Cement product. When it is kilned, the chemical composition changes from its base raw limestone. Cement is then blended with Coarse (Rock) and Fine (Sand) Aggregates. Sometimes Fly Ash (Coal that has been burned and recouped) as well as Silica Fume (Derived as a by-product from the production of elemental silicon or ferrosilicon alloys in electric arc furnaces) are added. Often Air Entrainment admixtures are also added for better freeze thaw resistance as well as high range water reducers/Super Plasticizer's in the case of higher strength concretes or when you are attempting to beget a desire trait from the finished concrete. There are other admixtures that can be added but I won't get in to all the variations of mix designs. The last component is water and that is self explanatory. The Topic Question (Is Concrete OK near Garden) is best answered this way...While Concrete is in its plastic state; Yes the cement component is caustic to vegetation and will often cause a temporary deterioration in that vegetation. Of course you would not want to place concrete directly on any shrub or flower bed while in this state, but once Concrete has set, there may be a very minUTE leaching of lime that is contained within the cement matrix. This may actually add a benefit to the soil depending on the soil conditions where you live. And this was more prevalent in cements of old but is not seen too often now, unless host soils contain lime that leaches through (In the case of retaining walls). In fact Cement and Concrete are routinely used to encapsulate toxic soils nowadays by Environmental Companies to reduce the leaching of the numerous chemicals that were used in Heavy Manufacturing of the past. Feel secure to cast your concrete garden edging at the side of your garden. I hope this helps.

I'm no expert, so my impressions on home grown citrus may contradict other gardeners. Most citrus take 12 months or more to ripen. I think the shortest are the Kumquats and Calamondins and grapefruits seem to be the longest at 14-15 months. Lots of information out there talks about improved cold hardiness in certain crosses and newly developed cultivars - yes the trees are hardy but the fruit hanging on the tree isn't, so your tree might survive the winter but you'll rarely get any edible fruit from it. Most of them tend to bloom during the winter and most of the fruit ripens during the same season one year later. There are a few types that bloom and set fruit off and on throughout the year - and those are the ones you want to find even though these rarely produce a bumper crop. Most of the container grown citrus you will find available are grafted. If they are blooming/fruiting when you buy them, and they are only 2 feet tall - then they tend to not get much bigger. Finding a taller, tree-shaped plant for large containers has been my goal for years and I haven't found any yet. You usually have to travel to the citrus growing regions of the US to even see them and now all citrus are restricted for shipping across state lines so you won't be able to bring it home with you. I know people in the Raleigh area that have large citrus collections, but they drove down to Florida years ago and purchased large trees which they keep in the ground and build temporary greenhouses over them during the winter. They grow just about everything and always have fruit on hand (with the biggest harvest in the winter). How they heat their many greenhouses is beyond me but they are very dedicated to citrus and probably don't want to do the math to figure out what each lemon is costing them to grow. To me most of the home grown citrus doesn't have the same look as store bought (lemons aren't always yellow when ripe, oranges often green, etc) and the flavor is equal to or better. The real noticeable difference is the fragrance. I can smell the limes when they ripen on my potted tree, whereas I can't smell store bought limes even when I'm holding them in my hand.

Planting Near Septic - OK?

Thanks Ken... I haven't called anyone yet. I thought I would post here because I figured to them a tree is a tree. A lot of the facts I'm finding on the internet is saying it's safe to plant a tree as far from the septic as the mature height. (20 foot high mature tree, ok to plant 20 feet from septic). Now conifers never "mature". Others say the roots will go out double the width. Are they saying that if I plant a slim conifer that gets 2' wide and 20' tall, the roots will only be a 4' circle? I find that pretty impossible. Very good question about the understock, that's one of the reasons I posted on here first. I don't know what these trees are made up of and if the roots grow as slow as the dwarf conifers. On another note, I don't plan to purchase any trees right now. Currently I'm getting the bed layed out with rope & roundup. Then I plan to order some large bolders and a few other items. I'm getting the bed ready this year, next year all I'll have to do is plant. I'll remeasure and see if I can move that bed up any from the septic just to be safe. The more the better, but I don't want it to close to the house.

Duh, my bad, Erica carnea is central European. But native to quite high altitudes in alpine areas. I was thinking more of the zn 7-ish species that are larger, shrubier, and native to drier climates. I did once have an Erica vagans intermingle with some azaleas and it did ok, but it was SE facing so the azaleas weren't shading out the Erica. OTOH I had an Erica terminalis suddenly die because a Salvia shaded it out.

My DD's roommate got hers from a family in Texas, but has some friends in OK and will have them check it out tomorrow. Her little pup is the sweetest thing and smart as a whip!

Perhaps this is asking too much when buying from people far away, but I would also like to see the place and the parents before making a final decision. I would want to know: Are the surroundings clean? Are the puppy's parents good-natured? Are the puppies being raised in a home atmosphere, or is it a puppy mill with lots of cages? Do the dogs look healthy? You are smart to be doing what you can to check out the place beforehand.

The roommate called her friends in OK, but they don't have any info on the kennel. Perhaps the AKC can help out.

Have you found anything more about the breeder? I live in Oklahoma but don't know anything about them. Hope you find out something and get a really good dog. tdsully

Thanks for everyone's help. We ended up finding a breeder in Colorado and got our puppy last Friday. Made DH happy not to go to Oklahoma and was much easier to check out being only 3 hours away! She is a miniature Australian Shepherd and is 9 weeks old. We had our first "puppy" class tonight ... she LOVES all the other dogs! Here is Penny's picture.

Oh, she is so cute and she will grow up to be a beautiful dog. She must have very good habits already to have her kennel on the HARDWOOD floors!!!!!! Love her....you are lucky parents.

Darling puppy! And I just realized that having "dots" over your eyes protects you because to a predator, you would seem to be awake when you're really asleep!
