Crummy start to vacation!

Okay - I'm venting here! I came in to work a half day this morning. I'm on vacation the rest of the week. When I went to get my purse out of my desk at noon to go home - it was gone! Stolen OUT OF MY DESK! I was out of my office for about 20-30 minutes this morning. I called to cancel my credit card and whoever took it has already used it for 2 tanks of gas and to pay their utility bill! How dumb is that?! I'm waiting for a sheriff's deputy to come take a report.

The really really sad thing is that I work at a church! A few weeks ago someone went in the sanctuary and stole a very expensive computer. What is the world coming to?

Oh Donna, that is awful! I hope you didn't have anyting in your purse that couldn't be replaced. It sounds like the church needs to invest in a monitoring camera - and post signs saying there's one there. Hopefully, that will stop the thief(s). It's an awful feeling to think that you can't trust keeping your purse in your own office.

Oh, what a frustrating and disappointing experience for you!! Hope it doesn't put too much of a damper on your vacation. We live 3 houses down from a church and a convent, and the convent was robbed several years ago. Police went door to door asking if we'd seen anyone suspicious in the neighborhood. I guess no place is sacred. I hope they find whoever did it - maybe someone just wandered in thinking that was a trusting environment, and took advantage of it!

The summer temps seemed to be about normal here, from what I remember. I'm guessing I ran the AC about a normal amount of days. A wet spring...good for digging out the Star of Bethlehem bulbs until the foliage went dormant in early May. A wet summer. The grass stayed nice and green, never browning out and going into summer dormancy as it usually does. The Con side of it though was there was no reprieve from mowing all summer. No watering was necessary for anything that was planted in the ground, at least not after things being initially planted out. The Con is that I have 2 big pot ghettos, one of sun plants, and one of shade plants that had to be watered a good bit in spite of all the precipitation. With so much rain, there was a lot of times that weeding was so easy, with weeds coming out so easily as opposed to breaking off due to hard dry clay. The Con was that if I didn't immediately Preen and/or mulch immediately after weeding, weed seeds sprouted almost immediately. Normal (or a bit above) temps are predicted for today and Wed with no precipitation, just perfect for weeding, Preening, mulching, spraying, edging, mowing, pruning things back and cleaning up some beds and the veggie garden. I'll just keep chugging away, trying to get everything done that I have been behind on all season. I also have hundreds of new daffodils to be planted. I haven't counted them just yet, but think I have probably acquired over 200 new (to me) named cultivars this summer and fall. What to feed in crummy soil

I, too, have sandy soil, though with no clay. Be thankful for that - clay has water retaining abilities and nutrients, something sand lacks! You need to start by adding as much organic matter as you can to that area by top dressing with compost, mulch, really anything that can break down and get the microbial life in that sandy soil going. Grass trimmings, your neighbors' grass trimmings, kitchen scraps and coffee grounds from the local store - I've used it all in the past. And you can put semi-finished compost on top of the soil. Just keep it away from the stems. It will break down quickly as the weather warms up.

Yes, daylilies are terrible plants. They should be removed from your garden and the remains must be disposed of properly. Lucky for you I have access to a hazardous waste disposal site that accepts daylily plants. Just send me an email and I will come over and dig up all the plants myself...to be sure they are disposed of properly! ;-) Daylilies are one of my favorite plants: the foliage emerges early in the spring, their form contrasts nicely with other perennials, they flower for a reasonable amount of time, they are available in a wide range of bloom colors and they are very low maintenance. The foliage does look a bit ratty for a few weeks after flowering. I have learned to just cut them down to a few inches tall when the foliage starts browning. Within two weeks they will fill in with new foliage that will look good through several frosts. Try it out in a few of your plants. - Brent

Seedmama, I forgot to mention that we also used white nylon cord instead of surveyor's tape one year, and it stretched and sagged too. I like Diane's idea about using fishing line. And I need to add that sometimes our garden 'contraptions' baffle people. lol My scarecrow is made out of sheet metal and is welded to a sturdy pole stuck deeply in the ground. The guy who made it for me cut the scarecrows arms and legs sticking out at "jaunty" angles, sort of like the scarecrow is dancing. I've never given the scarecrow much thought other than (a) feeling deeply appreciative to have a talented metalworker friend who made me such a lovely and useful object for my garden, and (b) observing over time that the scarecrow scares no one (except, apparently, folks who are driving by and think someone's body is hanging from the pecan tree) and, in fact, the mockingbirds perch on it and sing. Surely this embarrasses the scarecrow and he would blush were his skin not painted a flesh color that has no hint of blush in it. One day a local sherriff's deputy pulled up into our driveway and stopped at the end of the garden to look at the scarecrow. I said to a neighbor later "I wonder what that was about" and he told me it likely was because when you're driving by our house, the scarecrow sort of looks like a body hanging from the pecan tree. Uggh! Mia, It wasn't me. But that's pretty hysterical. His story of the groundhog trapped in the garden by the electric fence reminds me of the night I left the garden gate open and 4 deer strolled in. I walked outside early in the a.m. and there they were--4 deer standing in the garden. I stopped in my tracks and quietly began backing away from the gate. Unfortunately, they went insane running wildly all over the garden, trying to jump the fence, etc. but making no effort to exit through the open gate even though I was, by then, back inside the house and no threat to them whatsoever. Being nice, friendly deer, they had delicately picked their way along the garden path (you could see the light indentations of their hooves in the garden pathways) and hadn't even nibbled much of anything yet. Once they saw me, they overreacted and ran around madly trampling everything. Everything. They kept jumping repeatedly into fencing they couldn't leap over and even bent the fence posts. These tracks were made by wild running and jumping so left deeper, wider hoof marks. Finally they left the garden. I learned an important lesson about always double-checking the gate to make sure it is closed and secured. Hopefully the deer learned a lesson about remembering to leave through the same gate you enter through, because if you can't jump the fence to get into the garden, you likely can't jump the fence to get out of the garden either. As far as I know the deer haven't been back in the garden since then, and I generally do remember to close the gate. Anyway, I generally bribe the deer to stay out of the garden by putting out hen scratch or deer corn for them by the compost pile, and by filling up a small watering hole (it is about the size of a large sink) with the hose so they always have water. I usually feed in winter, and sometimes in summer if a tired doe brings her baby or babies to eat. They are showing up here 3 or 4 nights a week now, undoubtedly because of the drought, and if I don't have food out there for them, they patiently stand by the compost pile waiting. Tim will say "your deer are waiting out there". Then, I go out, they run away, I put out food and go back inside, and they come back and eat. My garden lives on, unmolested by deer. Come to think of it, we have mafia deer here, because they are shaking me down in a typical mafia protection racket, only they just want corn and not cash. Dawn

Well, at least we weren't going anywhere. I'm planning to just stay home and sew! But I was also planning to do some quilt shop hopping while DH is at work! :(

Arg. I'd be very angry.

I hope the credit places don't give you grief. I know sometimes it can be a real hassle to cancel a card.

They should be able to track it thru the utility bill because it will go to account # and account # will have a name.Good Luck and keep us posted.

Donna, so sorry to hear of it. What a crummy thing to do to somebody anywhere anytime, but in a church, and so sneaky, right out of your desk.

DHs wallet was stolen out of the car (his fault for leaving it there!) and the idiots went out and bought fast food chicken with his credit card! Well, I can't blame them, we were camped down by the American River...a fair amount of homeless there, hungry and no cars to put gas in!

Oh yes, and what a nuisance about the credit & debit/ATM cards....you have to wait for new ones...gotta go back to the old checkbook!

Hope the rest of your holiday goes beautifully and that you enjoy your sewing.

Donna, I work at a church also. We keep the door locked during the week unless there is an activity that day. A former secretary had her purse stolen when she took someone to the food pantry. I keep my purse out of sight when I am working.
We have had a lot of things stolen over the years.

Donna that really really sucks! Not only do I hope they find out who did it, but that faith may be restored for those around you! What nerve!!!

Thanks for all your kind words! I also remembered that my "good" watch was in my purse - the stem was broken and I've been carrying it around forever to take to the shop. Tomorrow we're going to Lowe's to buy a new lock set for the front door, since my car and house keys were in my purse. Back when I first started at the church, everyone on staff had a master key that opened anything on campus, but most doors were locked most of the time. A couple of years ago, the Board of Trustees decided it would be better to leave the whole campus unlocked from 7 am till 10 pm and give staff members only the key to their own office. It's probably a miracle they haven't stolen everything that wasn't nailed down!

Anyway, no one was hurt, and hopefully the sheriff's dept. will catch whoever did it, though they didn't sound particularly interested in my case. They didn't even send a deputy to interview me - they called me on the phone!

Well, I'm off to bed - tomorrow will be a better day! :)

I am so sorry to hear that. I still remember in high school when I moved from a small town to a bigger one and my purse was stolen during PE. The teacher got mad at ME for leaving it out. (I was new and didn't know I was suppposed to have a locker.) But anyhow, I was like -- who TAKES something that does not BELONG to them?

To this day people are always telling me to "put your purse away" (of course yours WAS) and I've been pretty lucky -- but it always is a total SHOCK to me when something is stolen.

I do recall in Hawaii on a business trip I had a teddy bear -- Tucker -- that DH had given me. He was boyfriend back then. I took him EVERY time I traveled. And someone STOLE him from my room. I tore that place apart searching for him and felt like a neglectful parent. The insult on the injury? I tipped that maid $3 EVERY SINGLE DAY. Later I told my traveling companions and they laughed at me and said they never tip, or maybe once a week.

But enough about me... I am so sorry about your purse. What a nightmare/hassesl.

I'm so sorry Donna. Been there, done that, not fun. I can't believe they paid their utility bill. Not the brightest crayon in the box are they. Should make it easier to find them. I do hope everything else is ok. Your homeowners may help cover some of the losses, be sure to check.

I haven't heard anything from the sheriff's office. I called Friday to see if I could get a copy of the deputy's report, and got an answering machine! I know they have far worse crimes to deal with, but it would be nice to feel like they were at least making a little effort.

Tuesday we changed the house locks and on Wed. I got a new license and a new key & remote entry box for my car. Yesterday we replaced the cell phone, and new credit & debit cards should arrive soon. The homeowner's insurance people opened a miscellaneous file instead of a claim, since the losses may not be more than my deductible, but at least they did something! I talked to them on Wed. and on Friday my new car insurance card and a letter about the procedure came.

Anyway, it's back to work tomorrow, and my NEW purse will be locked up in a file cabinet!

I've mostly spent my time off sewing, like I had planned. Made 2 new outfits and I'm working now on quilting a quilt for a friend.
