Issue with Blue Dining Room - going to gold? Pics included.

Okay, so here's the issue. I was all set on SW Hinting Blue for the dining room. Love, love, love the color. I then went up to the attic and grabbed a piece of my china, which will be on display in the dining room. Um...it so doesn't go with Hinting Blue. It actually quite clashes.

There's no changing the china, as it was my great-aunts. So...out goes the paint color. I quickly searched through the SW color deck and sort of matched two colors...Bubble and Buoyant Blue. Are they way too aqua for a dining room though?

As a last resort, I'm thinking I'll go with either Restrained Gold or Blonde. However, the Chandelier I love (and already purchased) lends itself more to blue (IMO).

Help, please?

You're right, I think the chandi lends itself more to the blue. I think the bubble is more blue than the boyants which looks to be green on my monitor.

Thanks, Brutuses. So tell me...do you think it's too aqua to be in a dining room? I know, I know, it's personal opinion...i'm just asking :)

Another way to bring in some color is to mix up the artwork a little more. From what I can see, all your artwork has the exact same colors in it. Looks almost like you bought them all as a matched set! It's all attractive, but it's adding to the monochromatic look. Maybe you can use a few of these pieces elsewhere in the house and bring in some pictures or prints with some brighter colors? You also have a lot of framed photos scattered around, all in what looks to be dark colored frames. Another inexpensive idea would be to replace those with either silvery frames or colored frames. Target is one of the best places to buy frames IMO. You could also look for some small vases, bowls, glassware or pottery in colors to mix in with the frames on the shelves. Another idea -- a couple more live plants. The green floor plant really stands out in that sea of brown. You could use a couple more, maybe some kind of trailing plant on one or both of the top shelf of the units on either side of the TV. Since it seems like you have green in your drapes, I'd focus on bringing in some more green tones. Maybe a shade lighter than the green throw on the sofa, just for a bit more contrast. Finally, the wicker chair by the fireplace seems all alone. I'd pull it closer to the other seating area -- just nudge it a little closer, maybe a couple feet. Sometimes photos can be deceiving, but it looks like that could work.

the only time i think a trend might be an issue is if you buy something because it's 'trendy' and you don't really know what you do and don't like... i once bought a pair of mauve wing chairs-not because i liked pink-but because the loveseat i bought on a really great sale had the 'trendy' colors in it of mauve and blue flowers on ivory backround- a very pretty fabric. so, i had navy drapes made and needed 2 wing chairs and the friend i was with suggested a certain fabric---it all looked really nice together. BUT, ordinarily, i WOULD NEVER HAVE BOUGHT PINK CHAIRS!! i learned alot from that experience--about sales and trends!!! there are always 'trends'... and, it's ok to buy 'trendy'- but you should be sure you really like something if it's furniture or tile, etc...paint trends are easier to change!! i put a marble and glass mosaic in our master bath which i really like... yes, someday you might not see as much of it as you currently do, but bottom line is -i like it!! if you love blue, go for it! if you love glass tile, go for it! but, if you're not sure of your taste or if it's important to you to follow the latest color trend, go neutral/white with the tile/granite so that in 3 years you can paint your bathroom coral, pale yellow,or peach or whatever might be most stylish then!

Hi, thanks for all the advice. I've decided that I want a gold but now I'm trying to decide if I want Restrained Gold or Blonde. I have Blonde in my Kitchen and I love it but I thought that maybe a warmer color would look better in the living room. Any opinions on that? What does it have to be so hard to pick a paint color?! I like all the light fixtures other than the small one you say you would need two of. Even with two. Do you think you would need two of the drum? With the length of your table, the rectangular ones might be nice and you definitely need only one. If it were my room, I would go with the first or last one of those. They have the softer glam of the inspiration room. The second one would take it more into a crisp or edgy style -- and that's okay, but it's not the direction you seem to be leaning with the rug and pillows. See if you can read reviews on those two and even look for photos of them lit. Differences in dust clinging or being too shadowy might favor one over the other. The coffee table would definitely work in your LR -- and didn't you say you wanted a shelf? This one has two. The round one you like has no shelf, and the ones that are plain circles that do have shelves don't hold up to your style. They are fine, but in your room I think they would be boring. The table needs something to give it enough personality to hold up in that room. It doesn't need to be bold or take center stage, but it needs to stand up on its own. I like the fact that this one has rounded corners -- easier on little ones who tend to bump them when they are learning to walk and run, playing, etc. Compare the sizes. The round can help open up a tight space, but the one I found was the smaller one. Is it too small for your room? Do you plan to have any kind of table between the chairs? If not, I think you need a larger rectangle for the coffee table so that a person sitting in one of the chairs has a place to set down a drink, a phone -- whatever. Which leads me to the idea that you might use a rectangle for your coffee table and a round one between the two chairs. Gotta run for a bit.... will check back later.

I love your china... and the adorable model holding it!

I agree, the chandelier will go better with blue. Silver is a cool tone, as is blue.

What color is your dining room furniture?

Is there a rug?

Oddly enough I happened to have the Dec. 07 issue of Country Home out the other day & it had an aqua & white DR in it. Not sure if it's your style at all but your beautiful china would feel at home in it! The chandi in it is waaaaay different than the one you are looking at but at least you can see the blue working well in a DR setting in this pic.

My dining room furniture is a deep cheery, so very dark. I have a dining room table, matchign china cabinet and a piano (lighter cherry colo). I don't have a rug yet (tbd), or draperies.

Okay, just got back from SW...and I think I'm going with Crystal Clear at 150%. It's very, very light and I think it will draw the eye to the china, and play off of the dark wood nicely.

BTW - I sampled it on the dining room wal last night and LOVED it! This is THE color now!

I'll post pictures after the paint the house tomorrow (fingers crossed)!

Awwww! best friend! Thanks for checking in. We had a small set back. They had to redo the ceiling in the kitchen and back foyer, so we couldn't start painting on Thursday as planned.

However, the ceiling is finished, it's perfect and we are scheduled to paint on Monday! Woo-hoo!

I am having some serious worries though. I think I just need to suck it up and do it. If I don't love it after all of the furniture is in...well, I can repaint!

Wow! Wall color to compliment the china! How often do you use the china? Will you ever use the dining room with different china or ordinary dishes? So formal, so elegant, so.....unlike me. You must entertain formally a lot. I salute you for that. I love to use my grandma's china from the 1930s but wouldn't paint the room around it.

I think you'll love your room, whatever color you choose. The little guy sure is cute!
