What does the dishwasher installation manual say? If I recall, ours had specific instructions for installing under stone counters, which certainly did NOT include gluing a piece of wood to it.

If your guy didn't read the instructions, or disregarded them, and ruined your stone, then boxer may be right. Although, with a handyman that's going to be a difficult thing to press. He probably doesn't have insurance or a lot of funds for mistakes like that :(

I"m so sorry....

I called him, the handyman, and asked him what he used and told him. He is fretting.

I called the company, DAP, and they said it shouldn't have done that. There isn't anything in the glue to do that. They said give it 2 weeks and it should dry out. Otherwise I am getting new counter tops. This morning it looks a bit better. I tried to take a picture but you can't really see it in the picture.

He glued the board because I only have one side of the sink cabinet that the clip could screw into. The other side is near a wall but 4 inches away.

They said to wait to seal it and see what happens. It is a water based glue and more than likely the water coming out of the glue when it is drying.

Oh, that's good news its water based! Hopefully it'll evaporate.

Now, I hate to add more worry here, but maybe you should rethink whatever the mounting procedure was. I didn't really follow your explanation... Is there a gap between one side of the DW and a wall, that's covered by a cover panel at the front?

My concern is that the wood-marble joint is not going to be strong. Particularly since the marble sucked out the water from the glue. Is this glue designed to bond to marble? Why can't he just build out some 2x4 framing from the wall and attach the DW to that? I don't know, it just doesn't sound right from your description... but maybe I'm misunderstanding.

If you don't have side cabinets to attach the DW to, then your only options are to drill holes in the stone which can risk damage to the stone or glue a piece of wood to it. With most stones you wouldn't see the glue bleeding through but yours obviously does. It's a bit unfair insulting the handyman - if he had drilled holes and cracked the stone you'd all be blaming him for that. Hopefully, the water will dry out and return to normal.

weissman, I'm not insulting the handyman... I just wanted to be sure the installation was correct, so the OP won't have any more problems down the line. I googled attaching DWs to stone and it says to use epoxy to clue the wood block, if going that route. I was just wondering whether the glue he used was the proper type. I know from my own work with stone and tile and mortars, that porous things -like marble- can steal the moisture that certain glues or whatever need to be able to set up. I was just concerned that might be the case here.

staceyneil - I wasn't referring to you - I was referring to people who called him foolish and dumb. Your post is right on. Acutally, like you, I suspect there's got to be some kind of end panel between the DW and the wall that the DW could be attached to - that's actually the best way to do it. When I had my DW installed a number of years ago, my GC expected the granite installers to drill holes - they refused unless we signed a waiver absolving them of responsibility and suggested that my GC glue a strip of wood to the counter. We were planning to do that until I read the DW manual and discovered that it could be attached to the side cabinets which is what we did.

On the other hand, I got into a mildly heated discussion several months ago on this forum with a "high end" kitchen designer who insisted that the proper way to do it was to insist the stone people drill holes without any waivers and if they cracked the stone, then they would have to replace the counters. She claimed all the stone people she used would do this and that I must have used some cheap, fly-by-night installers, which was definitely not the case.

Alison, I had a similar experience when the fabricator for our marble vanity countertop installed the countertop and undermount sink. We had these bleed through, waterish looking spots too. I was half sick, and then two days later they were gone! I hope that will be your experience. Sending you good vibes, with fingers crossed... -kim

I have a 70year old house and only an 80sq ft kitchen.

you can see the clamp holding the piece that the dishwasher will be attached to. the piece on the left is more a cover piece to fill in the 4' gap.

From your pics, it looks like I have a similar setup for my dw install. The cabinet guy built a 4" ply box frame that is screwed to the wall and the dw is screwed to the box frame. The filler is attached to the front of the ply box.
