I am just going through the list of books by Linwood Barclay.
His writings are mostly mystery fiction, but are very humorous too. Not too heavy, just a good read.

In particular, these books tell the story of Zack Walker, a newspaper columnist/fiction writer who always mangages to find trouble.
Bad Move
Bad Guys
Lone Wolf
Stone Rain...read them in that order.

There is also No Time for Goodbye and Too Close to Home.

All very good reads.

I'm reading John Sanford's new one....Heat Lightning....I'm having a hared time keeping interested. It's not as good as his 'Prey' books. Dottie

I'm reading "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society" for book club. It is a delightful book that deals with a very difficult subject (the German occupation of Geurnsey during WWl) in an interesting way. I am also reading "Three Cups of Tea" for another book club. Then on to Mark Haddon's "A Spot of Bother" for yet another book club.

Fern Michaels's Sisterhood Series and Rules of the Game which is the second set in the series. It's about women vigilantes that got tired of the bad guys getting away with hurting women.

Barbara, I read both The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society and Three Cups of Tea. Loved them both but The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society was especially good.

Just finished...

Winterdance by Gary Paulsen.
A true story about this well-known children's author (Hatchet) preparing for and running the Iditarod. It's well written and hilarious at times.

The Kid's From Nowhere by George Guthridge.
This award-winning writer tells his true story of how he taught a group of Alaskan Eskimo students who, despite nearly impossible odds, achieve one of the most stunning educational feats in the history of American education.

Just started...

Rabbit Run by John Updike.

Jodi-

I started reading The Yada Yada Prayer Group by Neta Jackson, but so far it's not very interesting. I think I'll put it down and start something else.

Just finished "Prior Bad Acts" by Tami Hoag - excellent.

Just started "Brazen Virtue" by Nora Roberts. Too soon to offer a rating, but I think it's going to be very good.

Next up is "The Appeal" by John Grisham.

I haven't found time to read lately, so much going on. I have a lot and I mean a lot of books waiting for me to read. Oh, well, I do enjoy seeing what the rest of you are reading though.

Sue

I just finished "The Miracle at Speedy Motors" by Alexander McCall Smith. I love that whole series and am enjoying the HBO series too.
Joann

jodi -- Let us know what you think of "Rabbit Run", will you? There must be something wrong with me; I don't 'get' Updike -- although I did like some of his poetry, published in The New Yorker following his recent death.

I am reading The Shack by Wm. P. Young now but have been reading The Yankee Years by Joe Torre and Tom Verducci while waiting for appointments, etc.
I have been a Yankee fan for 60 years!

My book club is reading "Out Stealing Horses" by Per Peterson.

Hmmm...kind of slow so far, we'll see...

Barbara Taylor Bradford's "Ravenscar Dynasty"

Recently, I read Jesse Kellerman's first book - Sunstroke.
very, very good mystery...ordering his other books.

He's the son of writers Jonathan and Faye Kellerman, and this genetic matchup has produced a very talented writer who has a style of his own.

Just finished reading The Elevator, by Angela Hunt. Now reading The Majic of Christmas, 3 short stories. I also recently read "Same Kind of Different As me".

Reading books by Lisa Gardner. Very good, hard to put down.
The Survivors Club (made into movie)
The Perfect Husband
The Other Daughter
The Third Victim (anyone have this one, I can't find it)
The Next Accident
The Killing Hour
Alone
Gone
Hide

just finished "Sinister Stories" by Perri O'Shaughnessy...now on to James Patterson's Judge and Jury...I finally finished all the Alex Cross books by him and can't wait for a new one...can't wait for a new Sue Grafton..a new JA Konrath...a new JD ROBB...these authors need to write faster...LOL

stargazzer....I just picked up a FernMichaels sisterhood book at the thrift store...didn't realize it was a series. Now I'll have to go back to see if I can find the rest...

How many are in it...does it tell me in the book?...I haven't opened it yet to see.

A new book, "NEW RULES of Retirement: What your Financial Advisor isn't telling You", (2008), by Warren Mackenzie and Ken Hawkins, Collins (of HarperCollins Publishers).

Mainly useful for Canadians, and I wrote something about it on this thread, but more over on "Retirement", a couple of days ago.

As a result of its unusual popularity - lending restricted to 7 days instead of usual 3 weeks - can't renew or hold - late penalty of $2.00/day instead of usual 15 cents.

It's lying here on the desk beside me, open to about 1/3 of the way through the 220 or so pages.

Due back later today ... library closes at 5:00!

Happy reading, everyone!

'Bye - gotta go read!

ole joyful ... the occasional (short attention-span, apparently) reader

Hi again everyone,

Regarding my "NEW RULES of Retirement: What your Financial Advisor isn't telling You" ...

... I picked up a link ... but left in such a hurry that I forgot to add it to the post!

Sorry about that - about 140 pages to go ... and about 12 hours!

o j

P.S. When I used quotation marks around the book title in the link, it came up blank on "Preview" and the post was "Rejected" ... but when I removed the initial quotation mark, it was accepted (including the one at the end of the title). [Or ... so I thought.]

But, though it accepted it that time as ready to ship out ... the rest of the line in the link following the quotation mark at the end of the book title had disappeared. So, I didn't get away with my sneakiness as well as I'd thought!

Sometimes these dratted compouters are as smart as ...

...one's half-grown kid!

Interesting - one learns something new every day (or should attempt to, at least).

I'm currently on a mystery reading "kick" and am deep into Long Lost by Harlan Coben. He's a new author to me but I'm so enjoying his writing that I just ordered a stack of his books. I'm hooked! Along with a terrific story line...he's very witty...with a fine sense of humor...that weaves in very nicely with his main character.

Beyond his mystery works...another little know author to me...but extremely talented...is Jack Fredrickson. The title of his second book caught my eye and I couldn't resist..."Honestly Dearest, You're Dead"! It's terrific! I highly recommend it. This author also wrote "A Safe Place For Dying"...and it's on my must-have list for next month.

I'm sure I'm never going to live long enough to read every book that piques my interest...but I'm sure giving it a try. ;-) I think I'm single handedly keeping Barnes & Noble from economic ruin.

Anne

teresava -- Stick with "Horses". Peterson develops his story and characters slowly. By the time you see the plot you care about the people you've come to 'know'.

I think it's a lot like real life -- you can't always see how different events and people come together until you have more 'distance' from them -- or if they happened when you were a child, until you can drop your child's view and look again through adult eyes.

I've decided to start A Girl Named Zippy by Haven Kimmel. You would think that reading about a young girl growing up in Mooreland, Indiana wouldn't be too interesting, but it has rave reviews.

In my car stereo I have John Sandford's "Broken Prey" (my first from him). I'll have to start it all over again since I discovered that my CD player was set on Shuffle. :-)

At home, I just started "Intern: A Doctor's Initiation," by Sandeep Jauhar.

Williamsburgjane, I recently read Same Kind of Different As Me and I really enjoyed it! How did you like it? I really thought that it was better (in a way) than The Shack.

Just finished A Song I Knew By Heart by Bret Lott. It was pretty good, but kind of slow.

I was going to start the second of the Twilight series books (DGD loaned it to me) but loaned it out to another DGD so I'm gonna wait until she finishes it and starts on the third one before I tackle the second one! LOL

I started reading American Gods by Neil Gaiman a long time ago. He also writes young adult lit (Coraline and this year's Newbery winner The Graveyard Book). However, I have not read anything else by him and this book is NOT young adult, it's very much adult. Explicit language and situations. It's surreal and complicated and bizarre. It's not light reading, I have to pay attention to keep it all straight. There is so much dream-like stuff going on. Reality and myth are all twisted together, with some really weird stuff. Reminds me of the stranger parts of Wicked in that way. I'm only half way through. I had to stop a couple times to read first my study guide for teacher test and then Tess of the D'Ubervilles by Thomas Hardy so I could better help DS revise/edit his paper for lit class. All of which has only made reading this book even harder! The librarian at the kids' school was talking to me about Gaiman's YA books and said they are sort of strange too. Now I'm curious! I'll have to read those, too.

Honestly, I'm about to stop and read something lighter, come back to it later.

Des, I really enjoyed reading Same Kind of Different As me. I was happy there were pictures in the book too, they really made the people come alive. I remember all the cotton fields down in NC when I was a kid going to visit relatives.
