Main drain/No Main drain

PB said he does not install Main drains in fiberglass pools any longer. He said water is pumped from skimmer to cartridge filter back to pool.

Also he said I'll only need 2 returns on the size pool I'm getting which is 15x34, 8700gal.

My two questions are: 2 returns, do I really need more and do I really need a drain on the bottom of pool??

I forgot to add...I'm ok with what he said about the drains and returns, it's just I want to be sure It's the right thing to do. I've done my homework but there is not much info about drains/no drains out there. The PB is very respected in this area and was not the cheapest guy out there.

I kept looking at the subject of this post and thinking, every pool I installed, had a main drain. But that was back in the late 70's. Now in most places two main drains tee'd together 36" apart is a requirement. It's to reduce the possiblity of entrapment. The covers are to be asme ansi approved and have the ansi number stamped into them.
Most main drains we put in, and most pools that I have worked on, have the plumbing to the main drain comming out of the front port of one of the skimmers. If you don't use the float valve in the bottom of the skimmer, nothing happens.
So I got to thinking. You don't actually drain the pool with the main drain. Most pool cleaners do better without a main drain grate to get hung up on. If you don't have a main drain, no one can get caught in it.
So no main drain, no problem.

It is not really a valve. The backflow prevention device or BPD is a device that allows water and materials that back up to escape from the cleanout rather than flowing into the home. Here is a link about them. Sounds like a good idea -- is it not? The plumber was out again today because we had another backup. He used a larger machine to roto(sp?)the line - he went out 100 feet. We cannot find the outside cleanout so he used the one in the basement. he will be back with another person asap to send a camera into the line to see what's going on. If we can't find the outside cleanout, we will install one and we will also redo the line if necessary. What a nightmare! Our hotwater heaters are also on their way out. One is leaking a little. With a basement moving the drain line is no big deal, but it depends upon which code your under and where the current vent is located... In a worst case scenario we may have to get a little creative in establishing a vent, but rest assured your project is doable.

I see you have an upgrade for the fusion soft 40K Salt System. It is mineral based with a chlorine dispenser. It is not a salt water chlorine generator. It would make more sense to me if you have a salt pool to use the Jandy aqua pure control center and a jandy salt chlorine generator which will handle all of your sanitizing needs, assuming you maintain the chemicals properly. At that point, with the control center I would ditch the standard white lights with covers and maximize the potential of your remote and control center by using LED lights that will let you run a fantastic light show in your pool and spa as well as control your Polaris cleaner and water features, spa etc. Ask your builder about this stuff, he/she should know. Personally, I would ditch the ozone. Cannot imagine why you need 3 levels of sanitization? Chlorine, mineral and ozone. 2 cents.

The main drain serves a purpose. When attached through the skimmer as all skimmers are designed, it is an equalization line. Should your water level drop below the waterline, it sucks from the main drain. It is not a means of draining the pool as the names states. True, older copper main drain lines leak and in this case it is best to eliminate them if you don't want the cost of replacement, but at that point, a wall equalizer line should be put in which is a simple hole if you are doing a rehab. Most plaster jobs will include new "main drains" in the bid. That means the existing cover and ring will be wiped out in demo and a new plastic anti vortex cover with ring will be plastered in assuming the line is good.
