OH i love that piece. No suggestions on the color...but I just wanted to say that it very cool and you got a steel. Have you looked up the Woolrich....is it the folks that make clothes etc? Does the top open...like a chest? Inquiring minds LOL. c

I haven't looked it up, but I will! No, the top doesn't open, unfortunately. I would have loved if it did, or had a lower shelf or something. But then that's just more to dust and collect clutter, so...

It IS a great piece, isn't it?

I would rough up the top a little more and rub it with a black wax. You could possibly do the legs too, but I would not want to cover up the Woolrich logo. It is really cool!

This is kind of what I was thinking. Would doing the glaze over white still make the Woolrich logo stand out? If not, well, I'm not married to the logo, it's the shape of the piece I was drawn to. I don't like the color wood it is now, and really feel like it doesn't go with the wood floors at all.

I would paint that wonderful table in a distressed black finish to balance the visual weight of the piano. I would do the exact same thing to the bench in the window.

Perhaps look for some black lamps to add around the room -- maybe a standing one by the piano?

Then add a grid of black-and-white photos (mat in creamy white and frame alike in black) to the long main wall.

Just some thoughts!

I have a vague recollection of seeing something like this, only taller, in a department store once, displaying folded clothing. And looking at the legs, I wonder if yours was a taller table that was cut down to coffee table size.

I think it's cool as-is.

I would so paint that table and it would look great in your room. My thought it was from a dept store too. I love the stockiness of it.It will really hold up well and has a lot of character- and a steal! good eye.
What I would do would be to sand and prime - if the logo is embossed don't sand it. and see if you like it in the room as a lighter color. the primer white will be ugly but you can tell if you want to go with a black paint or use the lovely paint you showed. That is what I have done at times.But definitely sand and prime; tack cloth it and then paint with your finish paint. You may want to coat it with a nonyellowing urethane for protection. The sky is the limit with paint, and if you don't like it - repaint it!

Oceana, I would love to have all those wonderful pictures on the gallery page. Is there an easy way to transfer them? I wouldn't want you to have to repost them, but they are keepers.

Teacats, just how would you do a distressed black finish?

I love your floor! What about a more yellow color and then do the glaze? You could add some more yellow accent pillows and I see you have a vase over the piano you could add some yellow flowers, of course if you like yellow. Maybe some beige roman shades would look good on your windows, I don;t know just and idea.

I thought about black to match the piano (which is "distressed" but it's authentic, it's nearly 100 years old!) But I worried about the visual weight. The room is South facing, and doesn't get a ton of light. In the summer it's fine, but it gets pretty dark in the winter. And with the floor being so dark, I thought it would be too bottom heavy. I have thought about getting a large lighter colored area rug for under the couches, which would definitely make a black table pop, but that has to wait for a while.

I like the idea of black. I think it would balance with your piano nicely. At first I thought about using a black, like a glaze and rublit off, but then it would only stick to the crevices and it doesn't look like there are many. But it looks like a great find.

My immediate thought is that you are desperate for color in your room. I love oceanna's ideas for making your table a super accent piece. Especially love #6 from the top, the red chest with the black flowered top. If you didn't want to get into the floral motif, just a black distressed top with the rest of the table a pretty red like that chest would be striking. Then you could add other red accents such as patterned pillows and colorful artwork.

I would buff it up with some fine-grade steel wool, and leave it exactly as it is. You need the "wood" in the room. You have huge ebony and fabric, go for wood.

Distressed Black Finish:

In a well-ventilated area -- brush on Liquid Sandpaper (yes! thats the actual name) -- wait about 20 minutes or so -- and when the finish goes cloudy -- the surface is ready to spray ....

Spray paint (I use American Traditions in Satin Black) in very light coats -- wait about an hour or so between coats! Keep the can moving! and do invest in a plastic trigger to snap onto each can to save your cramped fingers and hands .....

When the piece is done -- then sand off the edges. Wipe a slightly damp paper towel over dark brown shoe polish (the type in the flat tin) -- and wipe over the exposed edges -- which will instantly "age" the wood.

Spray several coats of poly.

Many folks here prefer brushing on paint -- also an excellent way to re-do tables too!

I think what you need is an area rug with some color in it. Nothing too light because of you son, but something that's lighter than the beautiful wood floor.
As for the awesome coffee table I'd go with kksmommy's idea of using a black wax. Great results from very little work.......

What about a color? Like burnt orange, or a yellow green? Any one? Any one?

I would do a rusty red color. While I am a huge fan of black, I think you have enough neutral tones in the room. You could do an antiquing or black rub over the red for some depth, but I would want it to be mostly red. A colorful rug would be nice.

I would also like to see the piano turned so that the person playing doesn't have their back to the others in the room, and the sound isn't disappearing into the corner.

My first thought would be to put the piano sideways in the bay, but I don't know how much sun exposure you get. I would then leave the couch where it is and put the loveseat on the wall to the right of the couch. The single chair could be placed to the left of the couch. That would open up the entry area nicely.

Otherwise, if the bay isn't a good solution, I would try to turn the piano so the player is sitting with their back to the wall on the right side of the window. Run the piano along that wall, hang some great art above it for more color. A floor lamp in the corner behind the player to add light to a dark corner and make the music visible!

Use the single chair in the bay with a side table and lamp. Push the couch further right, so that you can pull the loveseat piece in a bit, and make them meet at the corner they create. Another table and lamp there.

Is there room on the wall by the door to put in a narrow console table with a mirror over it to create more of an entry? If not, then I would hang a grouping of family photos or other framed pieces there for some interest, perhaps mixed with some floating shelves (these I would do in black). A narrow runner by the door will help define the entry area.

Whatever you decide to do with the table, may I suggest you tape off the spot where the name & date is and leave that rectanglular area untouched by your new paint or stain
choices?

Ooh, les, you nailed what I would LOVE to do with the room, i.e. putting the piano in the bay. Unfortunately, because of the three year old, and the age of the piano, and his propensity for going under things and being boisterous, I don't feel like it's safe for him. When he gets a little older that's what I'm doing though. The window faces North, so not too much direct sunlight, plus by then we should be able to replace the windows with the top of the line, low E UV blocking ones I've got my eye on. Plus a skylight, since putting the piano in the bay will block the little light I get. I'll try turning the piano for now, and your other suggestions though! Thanks for the help!

Oh, and I put the couch there because it's in the center of the wall, and directly opposite the bay window. The mirror is up now, too. Do you think that pushing the couch down (and moving the mirror) would look weird, being not centered with the window? I'm specially challenged.

Artlover, trouble is, there isn't room for another thread over there in the Gallery. Every time someone posts a new thread over there it pushes critical threads "around the corner" to page 2 and someone (me when it's my threads, and I add pics, so it's a lot of work) has to go push them back to page 1. Our Gallery is filled up to capacity!
