The Kitchen Table

I've got an author to recommend.

You mystery readers might like to try Ruth Rendell, if you've never read her. I'd always heard her name, but just read 2 of her books last week and went yest. to the library and got some more. She's written a lot of books, so that's good, b/c I tend to read everything an author writes. If you like mysteries, give her a try.

I am going to the library today....thanks for the suggestion.
I just finished a book I though was very good...hard to put down. It is DAKOTA by Martha Grimes. It might not be for the squemish....lots of detail about industrial pig farming.

She's very good--I also recommend her.

She can be really eerie, Ruth Rendell. In a totally "sneaks up on you" way.

I had one book of hers that just clung, after I'd read it. I eventually got it out of my house, because it was so disturbing. Such a tremendously believable description of an obsessive love. Not overwrought and overwhelming, more insidiously eerie. First you feel sympathetic for the main character, then you think he's creepy, then he frightens you, and at the very end you feel really sorry for him. ("Going Wrong")

The Inspector Wexford books aren't as creepy--though they're eerier than Agatha Christie and Ngaio Marsh.

I'm taking it slow and being a good patient, listening to my body. I can't do everything that I used to yet, but it's way better than using that cane, walker and wheelchair that are sitting in the corner! I've taken up painting old furniture and am having a blast! I've learned how to make chalk paint and am creating my own wax stains and paint colors with tints and white paint, so fun! So far I've painted an old childs' ladder back chair -yellow, an old oak mirror, silver and gold, and my bathroom vanity, to match the mirror. I've also painted my heavy wooden microwave cabinet, white, for my daughter. I've started stripping an oak cedar chest in the garage. I also found 2 french country coffee tables for $20! I plan to paint them too. I'm also slowly clearing out my gardens from last years' dead grass. The soil is so deep and soft from all the years' of compost and horse manure. Little by little. My gardens went to weeds last year, but hopefully, by summer time, they will be beautiful again! Margaret, you are in my prayers for a full recovery. Keep smiling and praising God for how far you've come and you'll get there! I am so aware of His healing hand on me, I just marvel in His mercy and love!

So I've got this chunk of Asiago cheese

Thursday nights are CORE night here (Clean Out the Refrigerator - Ewwww!) I had a handful of snow peas, a few stalks of asparagus, some half & half, 1/2 of a red pepper, the last of a hunk of asiago, and a lemon. So I made this: Lemon Shrimp Pasta Fresh asparagus, cut into 1 inch pieces (I had about six stalks) Snow peas (I had a handful) 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil 1/2 pound raw medium shrimp 1/2 cup chopped red pepper 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes 1 cup half & half and 2 cups milk (I use powdered milk and use the shrimp stock for liquid) Zest and juice of 1 lemon 1/2 box (8 oz.) angel hair pasta 1/4 cup freshly grated Asiago cheese 1. Peel the shrimp, and add the shells to 1 cup of water with a dash of white wine. Boil the shells for about 15 minutes and turn off the heat. 2. Lightly steam the asparagus. Drain and set aside. 3. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet (medium-high heat). Add the red pepper and saute for about 2 minutes. Reduce the heat, and add the half & half, milk and the asparagus. Heat thoroughly. 4. Pick out the shells from the shrimp stock and add the peeled shrimp and the snow peas. Don't heat - the stock should still be hot enough to cook them. 5. Cook the pasta and drain. Return it to the pot and add the sauce and the shrimp. Toss the pasta with the lemon juice and zest. Sprinkle generously with the asiago. Turned out pretty good for a CORE meal! Of course, the half & half was bad (the cats liked it though) so I substituted a can of table cream.

I've got my cat on a diet.

Basik, I'd recommend getting a no-carb cat food to feed your cat. There are many formulations out there in all different price ranges. If you feed a cat strictly a "people food" diet, the cat will not get the nutrients it requires. Taurine is one of the most important ones. There are formulas for weight loss as well but if you feed a grain free food, you'll see a difference in her weight. Feed no more than the recommended amount and use set feeding times. I feed my cat a combination of Primal Pet raw and Blue Buffalo Wilderness dry. Stop feeding the treats! Those are nothing but junk! If you want to feed a treat, get dried chicken or turkey breast. Make your cat do something for the treat; use a feather toy and have her chase it. Teach her some tricks that have exercise built in (fetch is good) so she's working for it. I play tag, fetch and hide and seek with my cat. He runs around like a silly goof and really enjoys the one on one time. He knows when I should stop work and will pester me to play hide and seek. He really enjoys the activity!

Are these boards tongue and groove? Tung oil as you see advertised is not tung oil, it is a finish formulated using a tiny bit of actual tung oil. the following is from the Wiki: "Tung oil or China wood oil is a drying oil obtained by pressing the seed from the nut of the tung tree (Vernicia fordii). As a drying oil, tung oil hardens (dries) upon exposure to air. The resulting coating is transparent and plastic-like, a property exploited in most of its applications which include wood finishing and the composition of oil paints and printing inks. Related drying oils include linseed, safflower, poppy, and soybean.[1] The oil and its use are believed to have originated in ancient China and appear in the writings of Confucius from about 400 B.C. Raw Tung oil tends to dry to a fine wrinkled finish; the US name for this is gas checking: this property is used to make crystal finishes. To stop this, the oil is heated to gas-proof it, and most oils used for coating are gas-proofed. This property was used to make wrinkle finishes, usually by adding excess cobalt drier. The name is often used by paint and varnish manufacturers as a generic name for any wood finishing product that contains the real tung oil and/or provides a finish that resembles that obtained with it." There are much better finishes for wood flooring. I used MinWax Poly for Floors on our hard maple flooring and got a color close to what you might like. See the linked info. I'm currently reading "The Water's Lovely" by her. Just started it but so far it's not that great. I'll stick with it, tho, because I read some really good reviews of her as an author, plus everyone's opinion on the KT. Sometime authors write really good books, and then some that aren't that great. This book is 2 yrs. old & maybe it wasn't one of her best but we'll see.
