All Moved In to our New Home

What an adventure this week has been. IÂm so glad this is our last move!

Thursday morning John and I drove to Lanark to pick up our U-Haul. When we got there we noticed there was no large truck in the lot. (Panic #1) We called U-Haul and they goofed on our reservation. All they had available was the small truck so we said we would take it. Once we got home John and I loaded the U-Haul with all the boxes (about 80 of them) when the cavalry arrived. My BILSÂs brought their truck, trailer and mini van. We got everything except our furniture onto the vehicles and went to the house. John had left the doors unlocked the day before. We got the first load into the house and went back for the furniture. We got everything to the new house in 3 hours. We even dug up EKO because I wasnÂt leaving my baby behind.

When we got back home there were messages on our answering machine from the lawyer, mortgage guy, realtor and insurance agency (Panic #2-5). They were missing documents but John kept saying "DonÂt worryÂeverything will be fine". We did get it straightened out but my stress level was sky high.

Friday morning we got up early and discovered we still had a few things in the fridge so (LOL) John and I were eating popcicles at 8 am. We did go out for breakfast after that and headed for the closings. Those went okay and after we got the keys I began to relax a little. One good thing was that it didnÂt rain on us like they were predicting.

We spent the weekend unpacking and got the kitchen and living room done. 75 % of the bedroom is finished right now. We are buying a new bed this week so we are sleeping on the futon. I did discover that the master bedroom has 2 full closets and a shoe closet. It can hold about 30 pairs of shoes so it looks funny considering I only own 3 pairÂlol. I got all my clothes put away but I still have tons of space. John said I should go shopping.

Yesterday the cable guy came and hooked up our tv and phone. It was great because we didnÂt have tv for 5 days. At least I got to watch Dancing last night.

Overall the move went smoothly. We are still looking for our step stool and we only broke one glass. John set up my art table in the 4-season porch so I have lots of inspiration. All the appliances work okay but I have to get used to the new "noises" I keep hearing. We did order new carpet for the 2 small bedrooms and that will come on the 16th. This week we will do some painting in those rooms and then we can get our bedroom finished. Still have lots to do but itÂs coming together. The view from our dining room window and the art room is amazing. The area is very quiet and we donÂt noticed when the train passes by everyday. HavenÂt met our neighbors yet but itÂs still too cold to be outside to visit with anyone.

Congratulations on your new home. It sounds like things should be better as you get things all unpacked. Don't work too hard.

Hi I live in lexingon. Welcome! Glad to give you some daisy "Becky" I have a perennial geranium "spessart" great groundcover. (though another gardener I'm very fond of thinks it smells bad) You can see it for yourself when it fills out in 2-3 weeks. The Lexington garden club has an annual plant sale. and there a plant swap or sale at the high school some time in early summer. Also, at the "East Village Fair" in September Follen Church always has big divisions, cheap. I'll try to get in touch with you by email. Congrats on your move! Decorating 'from scratch' is lots of fun but can easily get overwhelming :). We moved from a small apartment to a 3 story home few months ago and it's still work in progress.. My big and long living room is slowly being taken over by toys as well.. They seem to multiply faster than rabbits :O. I utilized the bottom 2 shelves of a plain white bookcase (Billy from Ikea), I put two of Target brown fabric bins at the bottom (filled with stuffed animals and lighter plastic 'junk') and a few books and 2 smaller rattan baskets filled with blocks and small dollhouse accessories on the next shelf. The rest of bookcase is my books and picture frames (it's great to hide eg markers and playdough and paint behind the books too ;)). I'm also planning to get a cube storage unit (Expedit from Ikea too), it's deeper than the bookcase and doesn't scream 'kids', I'll put her toys into bins or baskets so they're not out in the open... When she grows, I can always fill it with books, games, knicknacks like frames and vases as well...

Thanks for all the great feedback - I'm attaching yet another view of our kitchen. Yes the paint looks bad in the pics - actually it's more golden tan than green (Benjamin Moore's version of Tobacco Road) as it's showing up. And the small handles were my quick attempt to replace the brass and white ceramic knobs that were original. Tried to use just the one hole that was already in each cabinet door & drawer. So I'll definitely be looking for a larger alternative when we reach that point in this remodel. And after looking at several kitchen cabinet showrooms over the weekend, I'm leaning towards just leaving my cherry cabinets as they are - or at least waiting till the other updates are done to decide. Hi hi hi! Sorry I haven't checked back in here. We're loving the house. We've done a lot of repairs and painting (I'm covered in paint right now as I type, actually), and it's getting nice and cozy and homey. I especially LOVE our basement classroom setup. We're not completely unpacked yet, even though we've been here a month and a half now. There are still a few boxes scattered around that we're taking forever to unpack. Hopefully in the next week or two. I'll post inside pictures soon. Love the Harry in the window, Kat. :) Sigh.

Moving has it's up side and it's down side. I was a military member's wife for 23 years and I have to say, the very idea of moving sends shivers up my spine. What was once an exciting adventure is now my nightmare - if hell is your worst imaginable existance, then it's me in the middle of moving - getting ready to pack up or getting ready to unpack a house.

Nightmare.

The up side is that with moves, you clear out the junk. You learn to look at everything with a critical eye - do I really want to take the time to wrap this up and then unwrap it and then find a place to put it IF there even is a place to put it because the next place might be half this size?

It kept our belongings streamlined - we kept the important or very sentimental stuff, we junked what really was junk to begin with only we hadn't faced that fact as of yet.

The down side was that it's so much darn WORK to move. The chaos of it all, the boxes that get put away because you just can't cope with what to do with that stuff right now. Then you forget you have one of those things and replace it. Pretty soon and with enough moves, you could actually outfit a whole SECOND house with the stuff you forgot you had and replaced.

But, there isn't a lot of actual junk or excess paperwork because you got rid of most of it already :) That upside kicks in! :) It's a most excellent method of spring cleaning!

I have lived in this house for 15 years. That is about 12 years longer than I ever lived in one place before. Although a move would be WONDERFUL for getting rid of a lot of garbage we dont' need or use or want or even have room for, this place has to burn down before I am willing to actually pick up and move to another place again. Even if it's right across the street. Nope, NOT doing it ;)

I hope you have a good move - and I hope you don't have to do it again for a very VERY long time ;)

It was a lot of work and this is definately our last move. I figure everything will be in place by the end of the month. We are getting new carpet for 2 bedrooms on the 16th and we are getting a new bed this week. Our waterbed is going in the basement and we'll have a king size bed upstairs.

It will eb worth it in the end because we have finally found our "dream home".

It's amazing how much you accomplished in a few short days! I hope you will be truly happy there.

If you need boxes I have 85 of them.

Today John is buying the ceiling paint for the bedrooms. Then we will get the paint for the walls. We get our carpet on the 16th and then we can finally get the bedrooms together.

Of the 3 bedrooms we have our "master", one will be our stereo room and the other will have our desk and futon.

Can't wait to get my art room finished so I can start creating again!

Congrats! Isn't it nice to be able to put things away and know where they will be when you want them next - not packed in a box somewhere!

We are in Illinos. We lived in Joliet for 14 years then moved 150 miles Northwest to a small town called Mt. Carroll. We were there 10 months when we decided to move closer to my job. Our new home is in Milledgeville, IL. I'm only 25 minutes from work instead of an hour.

ALso...John found our step stool in the garage (yeah)

I'm really anxious to get the new carpet for the bedrooms and get them painted. Nothing like a fresh coat of paint smell!

OK, I had to go look up your town on the map. Wow! Population around 1,000? Where do you shop? Something larger nearby?

I'm all for short commutes. Drives me nuts to hear the traffic reports on the radio every ten minutes and think of all those crazed drivers out there.

My late father had a relay manufacturing shop in Joliet MANY years ago. Now there's a city that's BOOMED!

YepÂwe are a very small town but that is what we were looking for when we decided to move. Our "downtown" area has a small grocery store, hardware store, bank, post office, etc.
The next bigger towns are Sterling and Dixon. We do a lot of our other shopping in Sterling because they have a Walmart and K-Mart plus a Menards.
YouÂre correctÂJoliet has tripled its population in the last 14 years. It just too congested for us. Driving down Rt 52 is hazardous to your health.
