When a hall ceiling emerges through a wall

I originally made a similar post in the Paint forum, but it's sinking and maybe it's more a Design question.

My hallway, which runs right through my house, has 9 ft. ceilings. It emerges into my vaulted living room where the ceiling at that spot is approx. 13 ft. high. In other words, the hall ceiling is lower than the living room wall at the join. I'm planning for the living room and hall walls to be the same color (light beige). Because of low light in the living room, I'm going to have off-white ceilings. But I'm afraid that painting the hall ceiling a lighter color will look odd as it joins the living room wall (darker).

Would it make sense to keep the hall ceiling the same color as the walls? Or would it make it too tunnel-like?
