I got my hair highlighted

Yikes! LOL! I got carmel and dark blonde highlights in my dark brown hair. I like the back alot but the front, near my face is hard to get used to. The blonde turned reddiss blonde. They told me to come back if I couldn't live with it but they all (at the salon) liked it.

Kath, if you can't get used to it, I'd go back. My natural color is to dark to just get highlights, so I have her lighten my entire head, then do the highlights. It makes it more of a blend than the stark darker color with the light streaks. More natural looking.

Please don't try to do this yourself -- it's too difficult and you are likely to end up with unpleasant results. Let your friend put in some "lowlights" in a darker color to tone it down. If she's your friend she should understand.

IF she were to ask you about it I'd just say you admired a friends cut who has similar hair to yours and she suggested you go to her hairdresser to see if that cut would work for you. Period, end of conversation, nothing saying you'll go back to her. You really don't owe her an explanation. You shop at more than one store and don't feel the need to explain it to your "normal" store. Change is good!

It sounds like what's going on is that you have already colored it, and would now like to stop. If so, that's a different kettle of fish than most folks here have suggested. I agree w/ the suggestion to use a temporary hair coloring (some wash out in about a month) to keep the silver roots from showing so strongly. And w/ the idea of investigating the "foiling" to blend in several colors. Those might give you more time until you can just go back to ignoring it. I'v'e realized I'm getting MUCH more gray. I don't really want to mess w/ coloring it, and I sure don't want to create a situation where I have gray roots to deal with. But I toy every now and then w/ the idea of coloring it myself w/ a temporary fix just before big events.

I used to cut my own hair. My HS grad picture is a 'selfed' haircut and its really not bad. I would cut my Mom's for her, friends. BUT, that's been a long, long time ago and my cut is the basis for my entire look ;0) I wouldn't consider attempting it myself other than nip 1/4" at the bangs maybe a week before my standing appointment. Really, two people in the last 30 years have gotten the cut right so that its 'fix it and forget it' for all day whether wind, nap, gardening, whatever I'm doing. I've stuck to them like glue. I have an appt April 8 that I don't know if I'll be able to keep. Small shop, two stylists. There is rarely more than 4 total at any one time inside even though spacious square footage. Both stylists seem to begin and complete one appointment at a time and not overlap, no cutting of one while a color is processing on a second. Each customer has their full attention until finished.

I can't right now, Alex took my digital camera with him on his field trip today. He won't be back till close to midnight. I'll take one this weekend sometime.

The first time I highlighted my hair I was startled every time I looked in the mirror because it was so different.
Now I like the lighter effect and get it done twice a year.

Give it some time before you change it.
The second highlight job was too chunky...too young for me.
I've since changed stylists and go with a very natural look.

I got hilights about a month ago. All I know is they are almost un-noticeable, but my hair needs a lot of conditioner when I wash it.

I bet it's cute. Your hair is dark so it'll take some getting used to. Hope you're feeling better. You sure have had a hard winter of being sick.

Like Jannie, the only time I got highlights, they were way to dark, and not noticeable. I never had it done again, till mother nature started making my gray. Now, even those "highlights" are not noticeable any more. I am gray all over. LOL
