Mini Kitchen Makeover - New paint and drapes

To continue with my first floor makeover, I recently painted the kitchen BM Rockport gray. This is the same color I used in my family room last month.

The same day I completed painting, my daughter and I were at Marshall's and a set of placemats caught my eye. I continued looking and saw they had the same pattern in a tablecloth. I'm not a tablecloth person but picked one and and to my surprise it was 60x102. The exact length required for drapes in this room.

lynn, the boxes of hardwood were labeled "red cumaru" but I don't know if that's correct. We had several problems with the NC company we ordered from and (while we think the floors are pretty) they're not the Brazilian Teak we ordered. dilly, I can't wait to add some storage containers under the desk but we have a 17month old right now and she would have too much fun pulling everything out of the drawers. I think by the end of summer I may be able to get away with some storage under there. I love the picture of the wicker drawers...where did you find that?

What a simple, sensible, cost effective DIY project with such great results! I'm especially loving how you rejuvenated your open cabs and backsplash area by fearlessly working in more color. Although your kitchen was already quite pleasing, it's so much warmer and even more inviting now. Congratulations on your 10 years+ makeover!

I would leave the beams and the mantel in the family room the color they are now. I would paint the bookcase a warm creamy color that compliments the stone, not what appears to be the harsh white of the trim in the room, but I would paint the backs of the bookcases in the wall color. I hate the shingles, but if they are not up for removing them, then I would paint them the same color of the bookcase. I would really rather see them remove the shingles and just put on a solid trim board there and then paint it - I think it would make such a difference, and would still be a relatively simple fix. Refocus the spots on the mantel, not on the shingles and upper part of the stone where there is nothing to spotlight. Find a fireplace screen that fits the opening. I assume the other opening is for wood storage? I would paint the inside of that the cream color of the bookcases to take away the look of two black holes there. Leave the spindles alone on the stairs. I think they look fine. I would remove those huge panels from the walls completely. They add nothing, and the weird angles look odd. Can't tell from the pix, but I think she needs a much larger chandy in that stairwell, hung higher, rather than the little mini pendant hanging over the chair.

I think the addition of the stripe might not be approved by DS. I think it might take it that one step beyond looking pulled together and looking "decorated". But I will let him choose when he returns next week. He hasn't seen the room finished. Even though he chose the individual elements and has seen the room painted, he hasn't seen everything in the room. I offered photos but he wants to be surprised. That's why I haven't ironed the duvet yet, just in case he hates it in person. I went to the fabric store today to pick up some options. I found a gray linen that is very close to the background color of the drapes and would work the best if I added stripes. I also picked up a heavy matelasse type of fabric per a couple suggestions above. This one is the wall color and has a little circle theme. Yeah I know....i'm supposed to be moving away from that but I think it could be a contender as it's rather subtle. I picked up one other that I'm not sure how to explain but I don't really like. I also purchased a 1/2 yard of charcoal silk to use to make cording for the pillows and decided to see how that would work so I'm attaching photos for your thoughts. charcoal silk...I like the contrast with everything else and since I am using it to edge the throw pillows made out of the circle fabric, it would tie in. Unfortunately, they are rather stingy with their samples and have a minimum 1/2 yard purchase requirement... I couldn't find anything heavy except the circle fabric. The linen is rather "stiff" though and would hold a box pleat really well.

Oh how pretty! I like both as well. Are you serious? The drapes are tablecloths? Good idea and you'd never know it!! Just perfect.

homeagain--I've thought about using tablecloths to make draperies as it's a good source of a lot of fabric for a relatively low cost. I've never carried out the idea though for one reason. I've been worried that the pattern would not match from one tablecloth to the next. Did you find the stopping/starting points of the patterns matched? Did you line the drapes? They look very pretty.

That is a valid concern. These happen to have a fairly large pattern and since the windows are pretty big, the drapes aren't right next to each other. The pattern is off by 3-6 inches but I don't really notice.

I bought all they had at Marshall's and then went to TJ Maxx who had some too. I bought both the 102" and 116" sizes. I kept the ones that matched the best, which ended up being 2 102' and 2 116". The 116" I cut down to 102" and used the leftover to make a small valance for over the sink. The other leftover piece I am using for a throw pillow in the family room. They are not currently lined but I plan to do that in the next few days as I think they will hang better and keep the fabric from fading. And yes, the cost of one drape is what you would normally pay for a yard of fabric.

Your space was very pretty before, but so much more so now.

Do you mind sharing your paint color? That looks similar to what I'm hoping the color I recently picked for our MBR will look--but mine isn't painted yet. Mine is Devine Fog, but Devine is a regional brand I think, so I don't often see it posted anywhere.

And aren't you clever to use the tablecloths! Thanks for that tip!

SaraKat thanks for re-posting the info re paint.

I realized that you can't really see the fabric pattern in the drapes so here's a closeup if anyone is interested.

The background is an off-white and the pattern is beige, tan, soft green and aqua.

and a second showing how the pattern doesn't really line up from drape to drape....

My sister just told me that her drapery person buys ecru colored sheets at Walmart to use for linings. It's a cheap way to get a lot of fabric.

Yours look wonderful.

I had a similar idea recently when I stumbled upon a beautiful paisley tablecloth at TJMaxx. Then I realized: 1) I can't sew and I had no idea if it was possible to do and 2) they wouldn't look right with the rug I had just purchased for that room.

Now that I know it's possible, I think I'll buy them and find another room that could use paisley drape panels.

Very pretty kitchen. One of my "Favorites"!

As others have said, I like both versions. The new drapery adds just a bit more coziness. Reminds me of my grandmothers kitchen form many years ago. Fun to see draperies and floral patterns coming back in.

Thanks for the close up. The funny thing to me about this is that I'm not a floral drape person, but I think these really look beautiful. And I don't buy floral tablecloths to use as tablecloths, so I would have just looked right past those at the store. Guess I need to expand my thinking!
