Need light fixture help, ASAP

I deserve this for procrastining, but I finally ordered a chandelier for the dining room. What I didn't think about is a medallion.

Question. How big should the medallion be? Smaller than the fixture? And if so, by how many inches?

Regarding bulbs. This fixture along with another fixture I have requires 60watt candelabra bulbs. There isn't any I can buy nearby, is there a good website where I can stock up on these?

beautiful chandelier; I'm in a rush but re: the bulbs,
you might want to experiment with lower wattage before stocking up, and see if you like clear or frosted bulbs.
6 times 60 W is 360 W.

Thanks mitch! We're putting a dimmer on the switch so I'll use the 60. Do the frosted bulbs block light? When I'm home alone and cleaning, etc., I like it bright in there. Our old chandy had 6 60watt bulbs, and it wasn't too bright at all. And the medallion was teeny tiny.

Kichler has a new line of very thin LEDs. I'd guess they are about 1/2" thick. But they get pretty hot. I normally think of LED as cool, I think it must be the transformer/driver. There are "linear lighting" products that are essentially landscape lighting technology that mounts under your cabinet. You can attach light fixtures along the way almost where ever you wish. Xenon, LED, Halogen. Seagull makes one version. The light sockets are 3/4" thick. Personally I don't see anything wrong with a light valance. The valance doesn't have to be very high. I plan to add one to my cabinets to help hide the lights. 3/4" isn't very much. I think mine are about the same. Here is a link that might be useful: Seagull Linear Lighting

I also tend to overlight rather than underlight. I think that it is the biggest change you can make to a room's ambience without hauling out a paintbrush. For general ambient lighting I like old-style 110 volt halogen or incandescent floodlights in recessed pots. You can get them for about @$20.00 each - it's really not worth buying the pricier ones because you don't seen them at all. 4/5/6" doesn't really make a huge difference, base the light size on the size of your room. I usually figure on 1 light covering a 6 or 7 foot radius. The focused pins and spotlights are great aesthetically but don't provide much usable light. That said, I use them all the time. You can find affordable 2 or 3" Xenon pucklights for about $20.00 each. Task lighting is eextremely important. Don't go without it. Looking quickly at your plan I would do 9 recessed lights in your family room - 3 rows of 3. I would also do a couple of pin spots - one on either side of your entertainment center. These should be directional. I would do a square of four in your dining room and a nice pendant fixture/chandelier in the center of it. In the kitchen I'd do 2 each in the breakfast area and the desk area, a row of 4 down the center of the room, 3 directional spots over the island and 4 directional spots over the counters. You will be kicking yourself if you spend a bunch of money on your reno and then find that you've made a room that is too dark to use comfortably. Put everything on dimmers, and on as many separate circuits as you can.

I think consistency is important, especially in a small space. If most of the finishes are chrome (what's your hardware on the vanity, by the way?), by installing a light or lights that are ORB, you are drawing attention to them and you might want to think about that. Seems like from what I've seen on the shows where people are fixing up to sell, keeping things neutral is a good way to go. And just because you can see the two lights from the LR, doesn't mean they should match; the lav and the LR are very distinct spaces, after all. If you feel its too cold in there with all chrome, perhaps warm up the space with a nice pop of color in your hand towel, mat on the floor if you are so inclined, or other small accessory. Good luck!

Thanks Parma! It answered all my questions. I just hope when I'm finished with the DR, Kitchen, etc., it won't look like Oakley got drunk one night and went hog wild in putting color in her house. lol.

Another question. I know the medallions add a nice architectural touch to the room, but are they necessary?

If anyone is reading this who has a chandy and no medallion, would you kindly post a picture for me? I could kick myself for not paying attention to this in the past.

No medallion is necessary. Most chandys come with the decorative cap to hide the electrical stuff. I think a medallion can be a help if you have a large expanse of ceiling in a large room, and want to create some architectural interest and give the chandy more visual impact. Or, if the room already has a lot of architectural details like wide crown moulding and door trim, and it would look skimpy without a medallion. But in the average room, I think they are nice, but certainly not a requirement.

Thanks les. I was thinking along the same lines the more I pictured it in my head. My room is average, maybe even smaller than average so I don't think a medallion would look very good. Darn. lol. They sure are gorgeous though.

I have a medallion in a tiny room and it adds a lot. Give it a try I love them.

cb, can you take a picture of it for me? I'd love to see it!

The "rules" on the website about installing them said they should be the same diameter as the light, but if I bought a smaller, decorative one, I think it would be okay.

The only chandi I have with a medallion is the one in the foyer and it's tiny. The chandi's over the dining area and in the guest bedroom and master bath, don't have a medallion. I think it depends on the style of the house. I want my house to be casual and didn't want to go over board on the extra dress up things. In one room, no matter what the size, if it's not too ornate and over the top, would be nice.

I have a medallion with the fixture over my dining room table. The room is not formal, but it's not overly casual either. I bought a medallion that you paint, painted it to match the ceiling then rubbed the high places with matte gold (which is the color of my chandy). I love it. It dresses the room up without being over the top. I agree with Bru that it shouldn't be overly ornate (if you are not wanting too fancy or formal look).
