PB Question - Spa Water Level Dropping

Every morning my raised spa water level is 10-12" below "normal". Suspect I either have a bad check valve or a bad Neverlube valve. Below is a picture of my pump/filter setup. The check valve is on the line under the left hand valve actuator and the Neverlube valve is under the right hand actuator. Need someone to confirm these are possible suspects and offer solutions/suggestions. Any advice appreciated. There is no evidence of any cracks or leaks in spa.

I had same problem a few years back and it was the check valve.

I don't know. I have done some tests on the amount of water Canna use. The test was in Phoenix, 95-105F and 10% humidity. There were about 8 plants in each container which used about 1 gal of water per day for all 8 plants. I thought that was a lot of water. For your size pond it would be about 135 gal / inch of drop. I don't know how much of a drop you're seeing or how many shrubs you have doing this, but we'd be talking a lot of water. I also don't know how big your Forsythia is, they sure can be huge. But I'd assume most of the water being transpirated would still be coming from the roots in the soil. So it doesn't seem likely to me.

Salt Water vs Ozone and Quick Spa Question

Cement Pond, You can't go wrong with either choice. Ozone or SWG will make your pool very low maintenance. This has been a long running debate in this forum about which is better. IMO, I say the poll forum is split heavily down the middle for either system. I have a ozone system and I love it. Of course you can't measure residual ozone, but there is no need to. Its either working or its not by the light being on. I work in a chemical plant with a commercial water purification system and they have a ozone system connected and our water stays pristine and clear. Just like my current pool. Of course you will a need a backup chlorinator because ozone breaks down chlorine, so your levels will always be around 1ppm or less. Plus its cool to see the bubbles come out of the pool jets. Your pool will have this champagne bubble effect at nite when the lights are on. But with an SWG, its no different either. You will need to either increase or decrease the SWG on days of heavy rain and possibly shock your pool also. Also you will need to keep bags of salt on hand and walk around the pool pouring salt into your pool. So if your thinking its totally trouble -free, sorry but that's just not the case. You will have to carry bags out to the pool to "salt" the pool down. So this is where it just comes down to convenience. I went with ozone because of PB's saying they will not install SWG's if you have a waterfall structure. Now when a PB misses an opportunity to sell you something, I have to take notice at that. Here in the Pearland area, a lot of them are getting away from SWG's because they are having to come out and make repairs from the effect of the SWG's on water structures. But that may be just certain builders. So I decided not to risk it. I know with my ozonator I use very little chlorine and I have not had any algae or water problems yet. But I have only had my pool for three months and its cold right now. But the days we did swim in it, not one problem occurred. And I was very leary about getting a pool due to a lot of maintenance. This has been a very trouble-free pool. So good luck. As for the location of the spa. It does come down to looks. Make sure they mark it out properly. When my PB marked my pool out on the ground, we had to go back to the drawing board, because I did not like the way it looked. Don't have your PB, just throw some stakes out. Have them use the orange or white paint and mark it out. If you have a two story, go up top and look at it from above. It will give you a clear perspective of what your getting. Walk it out numerous times and ask yourself, do you want to walk to the deep end to get into your spa? For safety reasons, I would want it in the shallow end. But that's just me. Good Luck.

Hi aliceinwonderland-- Thanks for taking the time to read through all that and respond! That does sound unusual-- our pH definitely increases with the temp. I was using very hot water when I got the higher reading. Hmmm... Anyway, to answer your questions: 1. As far as I know, all of our water is treated so I'm not sure how I'd go about testing the untreated water...? 2. I am using a Taylor pool test kit, brand new. It gets excellent reviews but is marketed for pool use so I'm not sure if it's the best thing for home water testing. It's a small bottle of red drops- you fill up the little reservoir with your water, add 5 drops of the solution and match up the color to the samples. Mine only goes as low as 6.8 and when I tested the cold water, it looked like it might've even been a tiny bit lower (more yellow) than that. When I used hot water, it jumped to just between 7.0 and 7.2. 3. The diameter of the neutralizer is 13.2", according to the diameter calculator I found online after measuring the circumference at 11.5". I don't know about how much media as it's not written anywhere... my receipt from the fill-up just says "NF repack". 4. I really don't know, but the initial receipt for the install says "1354NF" and when I googled that I found an "NE1354" that says it is a calcium carbonate neutralizer in which the "mineral is an oxide of calcium and magnesium". I do have 3 separate receipts that all say "1354NF" (not NE) though so I'm not 100% sure they are the same thing. Hope those were sufficient answers! It's all foreign to me. I could take a pic or two if that would help....

One of 3 things.

1) The spa shell is leaking either at a crack or a fitting such as the edge of a drain or a jet. Not real likely but possible. Possible but not really likely. Would require emptying the spa and checking the edges for gaps and cracks. Finding them means verifying with either a dye pen syringe (had a 3" tube to reduce currents) or food coloring to check if the spacing are drawing in water.

2) Check valve flapper's gasket is out of shape or there is debris at the edge. Most likely. Empty the spa below the jets and remove the 8 screws so you can pry the top off and look. Use a #3 Phillips to keep from marring the screws.

3) The valve in front of the pump is leaking. Not likely since NeverLube valves tend to be pretty reliable. Requires lowering the spa to pool height and removing the 8 screws holding the top of the valve. I am assuming the equipment is above the water level and below (requires the pool and spa be plugged, drains too). I know the actuator is attached to the valve. Use a #3 Phillips to keep from marring the screws.

Scott, there are 2 check valves, one just out of the heater, and the other on the spa side of the left hand valve with actuator. Which one (or both?) would make sense to be the suspect one? Do you mean the Neverlube valve could be leaking around the edge ofthe valve (and then dripping) or do you mean internally?

The last one that is attached to the pipe going to the spa will be the likely culprit.

The NeverLube's internal gate has a gasket that has the potential. If a piece of debris was caught in there at some point, it can mar the gasket or score the valve body. The only way to know once the check valve is eliminated is to open the NeverLube and look.

The one after the heater is to keep a chlorine feed from back flowing into the heater. Chlorine can eat copper. The check valve keeps that from happening.

I had the same problem a year ago and found cracks in both the plastic skimmer and water fill. There was also a hole around the drain fixture. My water was leaking into the ground. I was amazed, but I was losing 4,000 gallons a month! I repaired using underwater epoxy.

You can troubleshoot by leaving the equipment turned off and measure the pool level at the step with a tape measure. Wait a day with the equipment off and measure it again. If you multiply the water drop in feet by the pool surface area in feet you will get the number of cubic feet of water loss, also.

Took out and cleaned both check valves, issue solved.

Yesterday, the valve actuator went.....got 5 years out of the first one...new one on the way, think I can do the install without any questions. Seems pretty cut and dry.
