Dropping water level - shrubs?

A post by another person got me thinking about this, so I wonder if it could possibly be true: it seems like every spring I start up my pond and start to worry that I have a leak in the liner or a fitting because the water level seems to drop daily more than I can explain by evaporation. My pond is about 18' by 12' and holds about 1700 gallons. Later in spring/early summer, the "leak" resolves and the pond maintains its level with weekly additions of water. I have noticed that my forsythia shrub has greedily dipped numerous branches low into the pond water, and the ends of them have formed roots, which in a few places have attempted to anchor down. So here's the question: could this shrub be siphoning a significant amount of water from the pond as it wakes up in spring, enough to need to add water every other day? Has anyone else experienced anything similar or am I way off base?
