Need Help Planning Kitchen

Hi. This is my first post here. I am planning to build a very small home (650 sq. ft.) in the Los Angeles area later this year and I need help with my kitchen plans. I will try to upload two different plans IÃ¢ÂÂve come up with using Ikea home planner. IÃ¢ÂÂm not sure either plan makes the most of my space, which I really need to do given the kitchenÃ¢ÂÂs size.
The kitchen needs to be L shaped. It will be built along 2 walls. The southern facing wall will get the sink and the eastern facing wall will get the stove. The southern facing wall will be 11Ã¢ÂÂ 6Ã¢ÂÂ. It ends at the doorway into the house- IÃ¢ÂÂve been thinking of placing the refrigerator at the end of the wall and letting it overlap into the doorway by 6Ã¢ÂÂ (just to get a few more inches). The eastern facing wall can be 10Ã¢ÂÂ to 12Ã¢ÂÂ. It ends at a sliding door out onto on a deck.
I donÃ¢ÂÂt think IÃ¢ÂÂll put a real island in the open area; will probably put a table there that can multitask as counter space and eating area. I do want a window over the sink area- my current plans call for the kitchen window to be 5Ã¢ÂÂ wide but I can make that a little smaller if needed to get more wall cabinets in. IÃ¢ÂÂm not sure if itÃ¢ÂÂs more efficient use of space to get a full range and store pots and pans in cabinet next to it. (ThatÃ¢ÂÂs my plan A ) Or, to put a burner in, store pots in drawers underneath and then put the oven and microwave in a tall cabinet to the left side of stove (ThatÃ¢ÂÂs my plan B).
This will be a kitchen for one person. I do like to cook and entertain. Most likely, IÃ¢ÂÂm going to use Ikea for the cabinets. Still thinking about appliances.

weedyacres, I keep looking at your pics and plans, and I'll just give you some of my thoughts. I'm not a designer, but I did a partial remodel/facelift to a 1920's cottage kitchen, mostly DIY, with help from family members. I used some existing cabinets, some vintage/salvage finds, and a few cheap cabinets from Lowe's. I kept costs down by using a lot of scraps that we'd accumulated from other projects. The main expense was widening a doorway, and building a laminated beam. Without flooring (which still hasn't been started), I spent around $3000. I didn't move plumbing or gas, but moved a 220v line across the room to relocate an electric stove. It seems that you have two choices: 1) Do the least amount of work to make the space liveable for the short time that you'll be there, then make allowances in the sale price for the new owners to update as they wish (my choice if I was purchasing the house from you.) 2) Spend enough now that a buyer/renter will be impressed with the kitchen and be willing to pay enough for you to recoup your investment. In your place I'd choose the first option, and consider keeping the old cabinets--maybe remove the cabinet above where stove was located, to make enough height for the fridge. Move the sink to the opposite wall, and slide a range into the former sink location--you'll be replacing the sink cab anyway. I'd leave the door on the right where it is, with very shallow open shelves on the outside wall, wide enough that getting through that door is comfortable. Then have a standard depth sink/cabinet/counter extend to the laundry wall--that door could be moved over as you've noted in your new plan. A broom closet or freestanding cabinet could go on the other side of the laundry room door. You have the fridge drawn there, but most fridges are more than 24" deep. Put the DW left of the sink, and the freestanding cabinet (which would also be appropriate to the age of the house) could be used for dish storage, close to the door to the dining area. With space and budget constraints, same as in my kitchen BTW, an ideal layout may not be possible. And I know some folks will have the opinion that if you're going to start moving things around, you might as well go all the way. No, worries, keep the comments coming. So, I was in your position, there was no info on this line of cabinets online. To get a sample, I ended up buying the sink cabinet just to take a look at the door in person. Thank goodness it worked out. I really liked the look and texture of the doors. These cabinets are 1/3 or less than custom quotes I was getting in the Bay Area, CA. Experience (I've put together tons of IKEA products in my lifetime, so compared to IKEA the ease of putting together these cabinets is not in line with IKEA's standards and their tolerances compared to IKEA are truly lacking. I would order a cheap one from Home Depot and see how you like it, if you don't like just return it to Home Depot. Just tell them the quality did not meet your expectations. Final impressions: As I said in a previous post, when you put the counter top base layer and screw these cabinets into the wall and put on the quartz counter top, they become rock solid. One of the contractors even sat / knelt on top of the counter top by the sink to finish some trim work. I knelt on it to adjust and put the wall cabinet doors in place (I'm 6'1"). Some finishing notes: Handles are Blankett Handles and the Toe Kicks are IKEA as well. We had to modify the Fabritec Eurostyle toekick clips to fit the IKEA. We shaved them down to size. Upper cabinet is from IKEA and so are the floating Lack Shelves. So, if you really like the door style, like I did, then it is worth the cost and trouble. Overall this kitchen cost me roughly 11 grand including labor and materials. All the appliances are original (carried over from previous kitchen). Range hood is new, but didn't cost an arm and a leg. The ceiling was raised 6" (before recessed fluorescent box dropped the ceiling) and a wall was removed by the dishwasher to open up the space.

I’d try to match the opening to the living room on the dining room side, then make a U-shaped kitchen. Put a small table or two comfy chairs in the bay window space. Definitely no to that first island layout.

Hope others will chime in with more ideas...

- My concern about your layouts is that you have a lot of small/narrow cabinets.

- what corner base cabinet is that in the plan?
With such small real estate, I don't know whether I would recommend dead-cornering it to get a full 3-drawer cabinet, instead of a lazy susan or blind corner which are not as readily useful.

- where will you put the MW if you get a full range?

- can you move the window closer ?South, to give more space near the range? Feels a little tight in that corner.

- with limited space, I suggest putting the trash under the 36" sink base cabinet.
My kitchen is pretty wide, and I still love my decision to put my trash under the sink.

Study hotel kitchens for small spaces that pack in a lot. You don't have enough space to devote that much room to a kitchen. A single 9' wall can house a complete kitchen and would be size appropriate to the overall home size.

I'd go with small appliances and sink base and try to fit a full height pantry cab next to the fridge. I think a range would be a better choice since I believe the main prep zone would be b/w the sink and the range. I don't have any corners in my kitchen, but most find angled cabinets hard to use.

20% of your home devoted to the kitchen IS out of proportion to good space planning. You need to post the entire layout to be able to see how things fit together and if other areas are shorted by having such a relatively large kitchen.

Live wire oak. This image shows the kitchen in relationship to the living room.it's an open area. Bedroom and bath are on other side of wall at bottom of image. And there's a deck Outside the sliding doors at top of the image.
Amanda. If I get a full range the microwave will go in upper cabinet to left of range. The corner cabinet is the IKEA 37" one.with a lazysusan
Sena01. I thought corner cabinet sounded like a good way to deal with corner space. Why don't people like them? Maybe if i just have bottom corner cab but not the top it will look less crowded. ? Thanks for trash can suggestion, amanda.
Holly springs. By hotel kitchen,you mean the ones in extended stay type hotels?

Sorry, I meant the diagonal upper cabinet. Some seem to like a 90 degree easy reach cab there, especially when the opening of the diagonal cabinet is small (I'm not sure how big yours would be next to the window)
