Sounds Like Marbles in my Hot Water Heater!
Comments (6)The guy at American Water Heater Co said to put a gallon of vinegar in and just let it sit for six hours, then drain it out, and rinse the tank a few times. I'm not a plumber to be cutting the pipes, otherwise I would try it. What could I lose but a gallon of vinegar and my time! But I don't see any way of getting the vinegar in at this point. If I ever have the tank replaced, I would have a tee put in for future use like this! Yea, yesterday when I was draining the tank, I opened the PRV so that it would drain faster. Now I have a very slow drip coming from it. Probably some residue not letting it seat properly. I'll wait to see if it heals by this afternoon, otherwise I'll be off to replace that also. Everything snowballs!!!...See MoreDoes a freezing pipe sound like a mad elephant?

Comments (10)Stopping sound transfer. 1. - some density 2. - complete air block More complete explanation: 1. At least one layer of dense material. 2. At least one layer of an air block, which could be the above, dense material, or could be foam. Goal is no air flow. So do not let outlets cut into your air block; you have to 100% seal all five sides of the box. Spray Foam is excellent for this. Do not use fiberglas insulation in the wall cavities for this project as it does not meet either criterion #1 or #2. Neither one. It can be used as a minor padding, if you happen to have a ton of it lying around waiting to be used somewhere. Sheets of the cheapest open cell foam are better however. Density: Double layers of 5/8" fire code drywall which is denser and heavier in its body than 1/2" drywall, will be more effective than double layers of 1/2". Density: Buying and installing cast iron for the stack makes sense here. All plumbers will confirm that it makes much much less noise than plastic stacks when water flows down it. Sealing plastic pipes with foam is a workaround, not what I'd call a solution compared to buying cast iron. If you do not put any padding in the wall cavity, you run the risk of letting the wall cavity reverberate like a drum under certain frequencies which cannot be predicted in advance. You may hear higher pitched sounds but not rumbling, for example. So prudence dictates adding some foam in there too. HTH -david...See MoreShaking Pipes - If not water hammer, what is it?
Comments (9)"Often air that builds up in the system will vent itself..." AAVs only allow air to ENTER the DWV system. They NEVER allow anything to escape (unless they are broken). Anything coming out would be sewer gas and smell horribly and possibly be flammable (as in build up and blow up the building flammable). There is rarely enough pressure in a DWV system to move drain line move. Falling water is about the most energetic thing going on. Suplly lines have water pressure all the time. The water has momentum when it is moving, and a fast closing valve can allow this momentum to transfer as pressure spikes to the pipes and create water hammer (an actual pressure spike that can make pipes move and cause damage to pipe joints not designed for moment, or even exceed the pressure rating of the plumbing). "When it happens, no water is being used anywhere in the house. " Close your main cutoff and see if the nose goes away. That would mean it is NOT water hammer (no water moving, no water hammer will occur, especially with no pressure actually available)....See Moreasolo
