White Plains NY--kids kicked out of car

On one of my news feeds it was reported that Mom threatened to kick her 2 daughters --aprox 10 & 12 out of the car for fighting.--and she did. One found her way home -about 3 miles and the other panicked--Yep, she now is trouble

I feel sorry for all but don't approve of the action.

Yep, I threatened to kick all my kids out over fighting many years ago when we were driving on the freeways in CA. We did stop several times and gave them a very serious talking and yes one did get a swat or so as it was she did-he said--he looked at me etc.

The only time they really got scared was they were really at it and I went from the left lane to the right lane on a 5 lane freeway at 70MPH and stopped. They never said a word until we got home, then they just went to the bedroom and shut the doors until their Dad came home. They really thought they were going to die!. I had to go outside so they would not hear me laugh.

Back when I was a kid, this was a fairly common practice when the end of the rope had been reached, - but the traffic, roads and people and world were very different. Now? A terrible idea -

My parents did this to my younger sister once, but then turned around three minutes later and went back and got her. Boy, she behaved in the car from that point on - it was the only time they actually carried out that "leave you on the side of the road" threat - we ALL learned our lesson on that day *LOL*

However, I can't believe someone would actually leave a kid to walk alone for miles back home, even back then in the 50's.

I just read that and came over hear cuz I just knew someone would be talking about it. ;o)

It was a bad decision, no doubt. The mom did what she didn't want her daughters to do- act out of anger and impulse instead of being rational. She should read "How to Behave So Your Kids Will, Too." That said, I can sympathize.

My kids were all 4 picking at each other, pushing each others' buttons, on a car trip once (not just once, actually). It was just them and me all the way to central Florida. I asked, reprimanded, threatened more than enough. Without another word I took the next exit, pulled into a gas station, parked, got out and closed and locked the doors. I didn't even walk 4 feet from the van, but those kids knew they crossed my line. I had to remove myself and let them think for themselves how badly they were behaving. When I got back in they apologized and the rest of the trip was much more peaceful. I just had to get their attention. In that case, silence and walking away said more than any words directly to them.

I also remember being about 8, my brother 7, when he refused to get in the car to go somewhere. Staged a sit-in on the front steps. So we got in the car and left, went around the block and came back to find him ready to get in the car! ;o) I don't know how if affected my brother, but I know I remember it as a parent- be prepared to follow through if the kid calls your bluff! LOL I've never had to drive off, but I have walked away at, say McD's, and said "OK, by, I'll pick you up next time." I don't get to the door before their sense of self preservation kicks in and they follow me.

I don't know how others will take this... and if this is a pattern of behavior for this mother there is an issue that needs to be addressed. But if this is an isolated incident, I think these girls will get over it. *IF* I kicked my kids out of the car 3 miles from home, they would know how to get home and, I think, they would stick together. (And it would be a while before they fought again, not that I believe the end justifies such means.) And I think they would get over it. I would feel worse than they would. If this is an isolated incident, it seems to me that putting the family through prosecution of the mother (legal and media) would have a bigger negative impact on the girls. Though I did think it strange that the article said the mom later called police and reported the 10 y/o missing, not taking responsibility for what she did.

On another note, the article I read also said the family's house was $2million home. Why is that a relevant detail?

Anyhow, just glad to have a place to have a quick chat about these things, whether folks argree or disagree. I think I'm going to show this article to my 15, 12 and 9 y/o's and see what their response is. Just curious who they will sympathize with. I'll let you know if I hear anything interesting from them.

You're correct reposado, Marilyn was not our salesperson, she is in a different location/bldg in cust svce. She was absolutely wonderful in helping us to resolve our original range situation (I'm waiting to post more details on that 'til all the t's are crossed/i's dotted, you know how it goes). Marilyn had nothing to do with not matching Leibert's price on the Wolf. We'd gone looking at other ranges while waiting to hear how our situation would be resolved. Our search took us to Conn. (to check out a Capital Precision, which seems to be in short supply around these parts), and while on the other side of the TZ, decided to check out Leibert's, to see what they had. We spent a fair am't of time with a salesperson there, discussing the Wolf AG, so we asked for the price. We really just wanted to get an idea as to the cost of the Wolf (we figured we'd be purchasing the new range from Reno's as we'd already been working with them). When we spoke with the mgr at Reno's (who'd handled one of our purchases), we told him the price Leibert's had quoted, and asked if Reno's price was the same, and if not, would they match it. He was surprised that Leibert's was selling the range for that price, and told us if we could get it for that price, we should get it from the other store. We did call again, to give Reno's an opportunity to meet the price, but were told the same thing as before. I asked the salesperson at Leibert's how they were able to sell the range for less, and he told me that they do such a high volume of business for Wolf/SZ, they are allowed to charge what they want. We really and truly wanted to and had planned to make the purchase at Reno's (we'd gotten our entire kitchen's worth of appliances there). We have been fine with them, and as I said, Marilyn was extremely helpful and responsive with our range situation and also with any other appliance questions we may have had. BTW, we know about things being held up. Because we've been waiting to see if/when a range switch would take place, we've been holding off on finishing the (HW) floors. This has held up the installation of our toe kicks on our cabs and a wood panel under our msg ctr (can't wait to see how much "off" the color is since the kicks and panel haven't been exposed to as much sunlight as the cabs!). Since the installer had to wait to come back to install the toe kicks and the panel, our KD's have held off having him come back to adjust/replace some glides, door hinges, my towel bar, etc. Bummer is right!

I grew up with painted cabinets. White ones, even. After a while (several years), the paint didn't looks so good. So they were repainted. Each time took a few coats of paint and the paint started building up. The inset drawers started sticking and the molding details lost their crispness. Later I bought a house that had cherry cabinets. They must be twenty years old and still look great. Moral to this story was that factory finish is much nicer- smoother and more durable- than hand applied. The pics posted of painted cabinets is typically just after painting-not 3-5 years later. One time I do advocate painting wood cabinets is if the cabinet finish has deteriorated beyond repair or yellowed and would need to be completely removed to revarnish. In that case, it's much easier to paint. The other time is if the cabinet is a really cheap grade of inferior wood. (Your cabinets look good in the pic, but I realize it could be different in person.) Whether you paint white or blue depends more on the rest of the house. I do think white has a more generic look to it than a color like butter or sage. I've seen pics of great white kitchens but they've also been expansive with lots of detail. I've also seen several pics of ho-hum white kitchens that are lacking "something". Wood graining does add a subtle texture that standard paint doesn't. Since you're going to paint the walls anyway, why don't you do that first. Then reevaluate whether to paint the cabinets white, a color, or not at all. Maybe photoshopping would help show how possible changes would look.

peaches, there was no criticism in your comments, and you have a right to be puzzled. I'm sure I would be if this were someone else's post. Waiting for the shutters is an excellent idea, as is the suggestion of soliciting opinions here before buying anything. Come to think of it I did the last time, and that's how I ended up with white shades. I may very well end up with white again, especially since my summer bedding, which I'm putting on soon, is black and white.
