Just venting - stupid birds!
Comments (10)It's not just squirrels that will eat tomato fruits, it's woodchucks, groundhogs to some of you, raccoons, skunks, rats, mice, deer, etc., and don't forget the slugs ( I have a beautiful brook that runs by my home and then cascades over a 30 ft waterfall to a marshy area below, thus the slugs). Except for rats which don't populate the areas where I've grown my plants, but others have IDed them as perps as well, I've had all the other ones damage fruits. Sometimes you can even tell which critter by looking at the bite marks on the fruits. And I had help with that at the old farm where I was raised and moved back to from Denver in 1982 to take care of elderly parents but still was working full time, b'c my brother is a first class tracker of foot prints as well as mouth prints, if you will. ( smile) Carolyn, who actually is very entertained by the many squirrels here where she now lives. Love to see the reds , small though they are, chase the larger grey ones off and then the older and younger grey ones go at it as well. No way to keep them out of blackoil feeders, so when I call for delivery of Blackoil seeds I think half of it goes to the squirrels and half to the birds. And I've not seen the squirrels in my tomatoes in the now almost 14 years I've been at this new place....See MoreGood Idea or Just Plain Silly?
Comments (6)The moving of the walls will be in the next few years, not months. We want to open a wall and make a great room between the kitchen and family room. We will be changing the kitchen layout quite a bit as well, but again, we are talking a couple of years from now. The back side of the house  all the bedrooms  will not change. I think it would be foolish to lay hardwood now when we know we will be making large changes in the next few years  unless we could fairly easily remove and reuse that wood. But I really hate to live with what is there for the next several years. Some of the floors had nasty carpet that we have already removed, so there is just bare concrete there now. Another room has bad linoleum that is lifting around the edges. Another has tile that is broken and missing in places. put in your floor---the right way Do you guys not like the lock and fold stuff? One of the products we are looking at is the Teragren Stranded Bamboo. This is a click-lock product that appears to be of very high quality. It is also very expensive. We canÂt afford to lay 3000 sq ft of flooring twice. You still think it a foolish idea?...See MoreIs my KD trying to screw me or is he just stupid???
Comments (5)A lot of so-called KDs, particularly at big box stores, are really just cabinet order clerks. I don't want to generalize because a friend of mine had an excellent KD at a HD who went over and above and did an excellent job. It's good you found this out early - I'd suggest you shop around a lot more and do a lot of your own research as you've already started doing....See MoreDoes this floor look stupid? pics
Comments (30)I agree, make the hall cabinets different in some way, paint or darker stain. You can also consider adding brackets or corbels under the upper cabinets to give it a different look. I recently bought some arched ones from Home Depot for less than $10 a piece. Check in the aisle where the decorative wood/baseboards are. As for Ikea BB, it's fine. I've used it in the past and it's great, BUT they haven't had it in stock for quite a while and they have been vague about when it will be re-stocked. The Craft Art has really nice stuff too with more wood options. Also, check your area and call around, you might be able to find a nice stone remnant. It's a small area, it might be nice to have a really pretty piece of stone if it's cheap. Here's some more inspiriation: Ikea BB, really nice: My last suggestion has to do with the main kitchen upper cabinets. I'd suggest moving the cabinets all the way to the ceiling and adding a shelf below. That way you gain more space vertically. You can use the lower shelf for things you don't mind showing, like coffee cups, small plates, etc. Or under your main dish cabinet, build in a plate rack. You can buy kits, or make one with 1x2's and dowels. There are instructions online. Here's a picture of the added shelf: Here is a link that might be useful: Raising upper cabinets... the blog post...See Moreingrid_vc so. CA zone 9
