Ugly Raised Concret Porch needs help

The hubby poured a "raised" concrete porch in front of the home, I do not like it. Please recommend an affordable way to dress up the concrete. I've considered putting some tile on it, but have so many irons in the fire, need something affordable that will look good. I think I will plant some boxwoods in front of it, but there will still be concrete showing... *It stands about 2.5-3feet off the ground level.

Yes, I understand ... concrete contractor for remodeling job made a big mistake pouring my front concrete porch, the shape is wrong. The angle does not lead to the front door, as planned. Here are some options I'm considering...1) covering it with flagstone- you can use any pavers- need to consider the thickness. They can be set in with sand mortar. 2)covering it with tongue and groove porch material called AERATIS- AERATIS looks like wood, can be painted with porch flooring or ordered in wood tones. 3) DIY acid etching or staining. You can stain it solid color or semi-transparent. Box stores carry them , like paint in price. Basically you just apply them like paint. If you did not seal the concrete , that is even better. I searched the internet and saw some very beautiful finishes. You can also be creative. A light and dark color together created some lovely effects as per the pics. I figure if it chips I can keep the gallon on hand for touch ups. (this will not help me b/c it is the shape I am changing) but I am considering this for other areas of concern.

You did not say what you don't like about your concrete porch. For what its worth ... it may not be perfect or as you imagined but in the scheme of things... the boxwoods around it, hanging planters and whatever else you put on the porch it'll dress it up so that I wonder if others will notice what you are seeing. I'm at the age and with enough been-there and done-that experiences that since hubby did all that work for you no matter what you can be proud of him and show it off for that reason.

It might help if you let us know what you don't like about it OR what you finally decide to do.

Color could fix all the ills you've listed -- fer sure. The actual building is not that bad, in fact it could be kind of fun. It's on the beach and light yellow might not be your only color option. The cost of paint isn't based on color; a predictable light yellow will cost the same as something a lot more fun. Vinyl siding can absolutely be painted. Good news is that yours is blue so you have more options. If you paint vinyl siding you are restricted to using a paint color that is exactly equal or less than the current color's LRV. Light Reflectance Value. Manufacturers of exterior products like garage doors, entry doors, shutters, decorative elements will list in their documentation with the product the LRV specifications. Use a paint color that pushes that LRV spec and you lose all warranties. So painting vinyl does come with some rules, but like most things in color there is a way to bend the rule. Sherwin Williams has a product specifically for painting vinyl siding and the way the color is crafted gives you a broader range of color choices. It's called VinylSafe and it allows you to paint darker colors on vinyl siding without worrying about warping or buckling. Can only get VinylSafe colors mixed in exterior bases, not interior. The stucco probably had color mixed in. That's a good thing but it's not a forever thing. Even stucco with the color mixed in eventually will need attention, not sure I'd call it maintainence free. If it's a matter of making the facade appealing to renters so you get revenue, then the convenience of built-in stucco color isn't really doing much for ya. Just 'cuz you don't have to paint it doesn't mean people want to live it. Painting that brick is a really good idea, IMO. So, yeah, the disjointed materials and the disparate color scheme is a problem. But painting everything the same light yellow isn't necessarily the right solution --- or maybe I should say the most *inviting* solution you could come up with to give it more curb appeal. Not sure if you were thinking along the lines of painting everything light yellow or not. I do think you have some significant color design opportunities.

I should know better than to ask for your help just before I knew my schedule was about to explode. I'm sorry. Sort of. But sort of not sorry because ...wow! grapefruit, I bet you never knew how lucky you were to not have a big, ugly well pipe as a yard "feature". Apparently, that's where the electrical part of the well pump is housed. The pump itself is under there somewhere. lukki, We're twinsies! My septic is directly off of our back deck. It has a lovely bed of weedy white rocks over the access. I mean, why be subtle? robo, Ooh! I like both of those! Thanks for proving that a pergola can look good on a ranch. And yes, we have our share of windmills and lighthouses here too. The guy down the street has a giant toadstool covering his well. lori, Now that you mention it, I don't see any reason why that pipe needs to be so tall. We had the top off of it to chlorinate the well when we first moved. There is nothing near the top of the pipe other than some wires. I'll look into that. Thanks! bpath, You got me. It's the watering. I just don't think about it until things are starting to show the stress of being too dry. My neighbor tells me that it is not that big of a problem out here because the water table is so high. She's probably right. Our grass in town used to turn brown in the summer without watering. It was green spring through fall out here on the lake last year. That won't help me is I put in those cute windowboxes though ;/ And then we get to Magdalena ... Holy Cow! That looks amazing! In fact, after I showed it to my husband, I think we've decided to just do the repairs that must be done and save our money until we can do this. It's perfect. You even managed to hide our well. I don't know how much money you have to invest, but that area under the eaves might be a great place to display your outdoor sculpture collection, but forget about growing much in the way of plants there, for a whole host of reasons. Same goes for that white gravel bed. To me, the best use of that space, if you want a front porch, would be to put one there, big enough to use, taking up the whole space. Otherwise, you can extend the white stones to fill those areas and set things on them. I do that in front of my house, I have some large pots with plants growing on them, and I do have a bench that I sit on when resting after doing yardwork, which can be set on stone as well as concrete. But honestly, by the time you buy enough rocks to fill the space, you could just have a concrete or brick guy do a porch for you. I'd at least get a quote.

I don't like the diagonal siding at all. The architecture of the back of your house leans more traditional and the diagonal siding sticks out like a 70s sore thumb. I would replace it with perhaps board & batten. Also, the posts holding up your porch roof look like toothpicks. I'd definitely beef them up to at least 6x6 posts, maybe bigger. Your roof is a great charcoal colour. I would paint the posts, doors and the rest of this porch area charcoal to match the roof and make it different from the rest of your trim. One question, the posts that are in the interior of your porch look really odd to me. Are they necessary? Are they structural? If they are, I would try to find a different solution for those. Either get rid of them if you can or build them in somehow. Maybe build a shallow wall coming out from the house on either side of your glass doors that enclose these posts. Where those posts currently are, they look like they are not centered on the glass door. If you enclose them in a shallow wall you could fix this.

I just finished doing something similar to my ugly concrete front porch - used concrete stain (not acid) in multiple colors to look like bluestone, then grinded grout lines between the stones and sealed it. Looks very much like real stone and didn't cost very much to do. You may want to try something like this.

I know this was a long time ago but jhyattmd, do you happen to have any pics of your stained patio? We're going to have a new plain slab poured for our old broken up patio and I'm trying to decide how I might dress it up with stain.
