Do I need an in-line filter?

I just moved into a house with well water. Builder installed water softener and water seemed fine (no smell or dry skin evident) until a month later. At that time, water reeked of sulfur. We called Culligan because other neighbors expressed satifaction and ended up purchasing an Aquadose chemical feeder which adds chlorine to the water and eliminates the sulfur smell. We also had an under-the-sink purifier installed along with a hook-up to the refrigerator. Now, the builder is willing to install an in-line filter (Pentek "Big Blue" #20). Do I need it? It won't cost me anything up front but I don't want unncessary costs down the road (say for filters). What to do? Should I first have my water tested?
