Soapstone experience in Atlanta?
Comments (8)I wanted soapstone too, but most fabricators here did not seem to be very familiar with it (and most I spoke to tried to tell me how much better granite is for a counter, citing maintenance issues with soapstone, etc etc). I found it a frustrating experience, and we ended up getting granite, although mainly for cost reasons. We found the following places that do install soapstone: Stonehenge Atlanta Intown Granite Inman Park Marble and Granite Home Depot Expo The first 3 places were all about $90-100/sf, and mostly get their SS from either G+L or Walker Zanger stoneyards. Or they said they could work with stone that you get from elsewhere (eg M Texeira). This was just too expensive for our budget, although i think its quite reasonable compared to prices in other cities. We did get a bathroom vanity using a SS remnant from Stonehenge ($35/sf including fabrication/installation) -- you may be lucky with a smaller counter and be able to do it from remnants? Expo uses PremierSurfaces, and their price is $69/sf. This was closer to our budget but we were reluctant as Premier were not very helpful over the phone, and it sounded like you couldnt go and choose your slab, and I believe they had only 1 variety of SS. We also considered buying stone from M Teixeira pre-fab and installing ourselves. But this would still have been more than the granite we ended up buying. If you are handy, you could consider buying SS from M Tex and doing the fabrication and installation yourself -- this would be the cheapest route and people on here have done their own DIY soapstone. Granites that look like soapstone (Virginia mist, Black Cambrian, Nordic Black) etc were all about the same price, at least the quotes we got. We ended up getting Black Galaxy granite from Atlanta Intown. Looks nothing like SS but we liked its irregularity and depth. And we got a good sale price on it ($52/sf). I am certain I would have liked SS a lot more, but I do like the money we saved and this is not our forever house -- if it would be, I would have wanted to go for the soapstone somehow. Not sure if she still reads, but Fightingoverfinishes got her SS fabricated by AtlantaIntown so she may be able to give you some advice about them. She bought her stone (Beleza) from Dorado stone, there is a yard out in Rome GA. Sorry this is rambling. Hope this is helpful and good luck with finding your soapstone!...See MoreWho's done pre-fab counters from Teixeira?

Comments (12)I had barocca from M tex installed in my kitchen about 2 months ago. It is soft, but in my opinion that is one of the reasons we wanted it. Our house is 100 years old (built in 1910) and we wanted a kitchen that looks like it's been here since forever. We are hoping it develops patina sooner rather than later. We have two small chips -- one where our kitchen installer dropped a huge metal tool onto the edge of the counter as he was adjusting something (not sure what). We have another tiny chip where the SS fridge handle bangs into the counter every single time you open it (we don't have great clearance). That being said, I love the soapstone and would do it again in a heartbeat. We had friends over this weekend, and we were partying until 4am. The next day, there was tons of stuff spilled all over the counters... red wine, strawberries (from the tarts I made) lime wedges, etc. It sat for at least a full day while I got over my hangover. It cleaned up incredibly easily, no staining or worrying about the SS reacting with the acid or other foods. I was baking like crazy and pulling hot cookies out of the oven and putting the baking sheet directly on the counter...never had to worry about the soapstone scorching. I only have some crappy pictures from my cell phone, but promise I will post some actual pictures soon... I am planning on joining the "finished kitchen club" in the next week or two! Counter (backsplash was installed, but not grouted at this point) Penninsula...See Moregood or bad experience with M. Teixeira?
Comments (28)1. Whenever any company sells a lot and has done so for many years, the following truths can be said to be guaranteed: - that most of the buyers have bought, paid and had their stuff delivered without significant complaint problem or hiccup - that they were satisfied - that some of the buyers (or prospective buyers) had problems I think it is fine for R Teixeira to be active in defending his point of view. 2. Whenever any individual approaches a kitchen renovation... and for the first time in one's life... the following truths can be said to be guaranteed: - that pain will be present as one goes through the learning process - that some vendor somewhere might force you to go away instead of educating you - that such an occurrence can be very painful Last week we read remarks in another thread about one GW participant who used metaphors to describe her complaints. Only a handful commented that the language was either too vague, too inflated, or too psychological to be useful to others. 3. Whenever any forum or group exists... and in stable form too... the following truths can be said to be guaranteed: - that an animal loyalty hierarchy will exist - that this then causes some loyal person to spring to action to protect some other ranked member at some point - that the discussion can then move Away from The Factual Point and revolve only around Loyalty and Conduct. Last week we read remarks in two threads about how much we all appreciate that 1 GW participant who used metaphors to describe her complaints... And we also saw a lot of indirect criticism of the people who spoke to address facts and contain or minimize metaphoric language or psychological conclusions. Be thee all aware. There's not much there, when all is said and done. It was pus busting pain. hth...See Moredseng
