they break really easily.

sooooooooo, I removed a toilet today on a job site for a flooring job. I leaned the lid against the wall for a nano-second and it slid down the wall and broke into pieces. I am completely responsible and will replace the entire toilet at my expense if need be, however, I was wondering if any of you plumbing pros have, or know where I can get a replacement for a Mansfield, bone color lid. The number on the inside of the lid is 032. The number on the inside of the tank is 58. The toilet was made in 1990.

I have tried several plumbing supply places and salvage places, to no avail. Any help or advice is greatly appreciated. TIA,

Without knowing where you're located, I'd say googling "used toilet tank lids" will get you someplace. Here's one place:

I already tried them, am waiting to hear back from them..
Some of the replacements I did find cost more than a new toilet!!

I'll try the HFH site also. Thx again..

newhostalady, if my experience can be a cautionary tale, then, yes, that is a good thing. But they told me that they'd be dropping all the shingles into the dumpster on the driveway and you see what happened in the back. Get things like bird baths, feeders, pots of plants, etc. safely put away because you don't know for sure where things will land, lol. But a solid roof, ....gotta have it, right? Good luck on yours! Phil, I was just thinking that I should get my windows washed because how much worse can it get now with more ladders out there?.....a roofing nail in your shoe, and ilovetogrow finding nails nine months later, those are both good reasons for me to wear better shoes and get a magnet out there. As the plants die back this fall I'll probably be able to find a lot more. Just today I found a piece of shingle and a nail close to one of the bird baths I was filling. For one moment I thought about how bernd said the nail is good for my soil. Then I imagined hitting that nail with my shovel some day and tossed it in the trash. littlebug5, I understand the apprehension that goes with any projects like this. My DH still thinks we need new gutters, ~sigh~. When they built the decks, I got some of that bright caution tape and bamboo stakes. They managed not to ruin some shrubs I had blocked off that way. Maybe that will work for your cherry tree and hydrangea. Good luck to you, too!

The prior owners had a whole house generator installed. It is enormous, i think 60,000 watts, i believe the largest you can have in a residential setting? It has a dedicated 1,000 gallon underground propane tank. It automatically comes on when the power goes out; you only know power has been lost because it flickers momentarily. It powers the entire house, which is pretty large. Personally, I would never have installed such a thing. They left us files on many household appliances, and this thing cost about 20k installed, plus a cement pad and fencing to hide it. My reply was, what, so I can save a couple of pounds of burger in the freezer? Silly. Well, in the 2 yrs or so we have been in the house, there were two hurricanes and an ice storm. I think in toto there has been three weeks without power over this time! I still may not have been impressed until I realized that, if you have well water, no electricity means no water! THAT is the killer. I can usually keep warm, esp w a fpl, and use candles, read a good book. But not being able to flush a toilet? No thanks. So, my advice is, consider it. 1) I would not put in one as large as the PO did, and I don't think it needs to run everything (ours heats our pool and lights our trees ... silly!). 2)BUT, I would not want one that you need to go out and refuel. Often you won't be able to do that easily. I am told we could go three weeks as normal, using our u/g tank. and 3) If you have a generator, do not run it continuously for days on end, even in emergencies. You need to turn it off for a few hours from time to time. PS. Random tip. We would freeze bags of water in the freezer when we had the generator on during the day, and then when we turned the generator off at night, we would fill the fridge with the bags of ice. The next morning the ice was water and we would do it all over again ...

DON'T use vinegar in your washing machine

I have a 2014 LG front loader and my wife has been using white vinegar with every load, not a lot, just poured into the fabric softener and bleach dispensers (we didn't know about not using vinegar in the wash cycle which is when the bleach dispenser is released).. Two years in, the dispenser drawer started to leak out of the front. Then rust streaks started to appear under the dispenser. .. A few more years went by and I decided it was time to take the washer apart to clean the door gasket and try to find out why the dispenser was leaking.. What I found was the hose that goes from the back of the dispenser to the tub was badly deformed, looking like it was partially melted. The crumpled and restricted hose obviously caused the dispenser fluids to back-up and leak out of the front. .. Once I got the front door panel off, I could see that the lower main tub drain hose was also deformed and restricted. I was surprised the washer still functioned. Upper hose Lower hose The only products that have gone into the machine are liquid detergent and vinegar (vinegar was also used for the tub clean cycle). This is regular white vinegar you buy at the grocery store. I found this on LG's website: Can vinegar damage your Washing Machine? Yes, vinegar can harm rubber parts inside a Washing Machine, which will eventually lead to leaks if used too often. Whilst washing your clothes with vinegar is a cost-effective, natural way to soften and deodorize fabrics, avoid using it in your washer too frequently. Only use it sporadically when deep cleaning the machine. Can't be 100% sure, but the vinegar we used is the prime suspect. I replaced the hoses and stopped using vinegar. So far, the issue has not returned. Perhaps LG (and others) should make higher quality rubber for their products?

Back in my first years on my own I tried the set but the lid would never stay up with it on there and after cleaning the toilet decided that was a mistake to buy that set so out it went. Bought one of the soft toilet seats and they were really nice for cold winter days when I had the heat down a bit lower. Now, it doesn't bother me and I keep the heat higher than in those days now that I'm older. I figure a few more therms of gas are no big deal compared to my comfort. I worked and saved, now it's time to enjoy it. I like seeing the old radiators. There's something comforting about them. I just wouldn't want it for my heat source because around here, steam heat is hideously expensive. I like seeing some of the covers people build for radiators. I guess I find it amusing how some get so worked up over a litter box, most of whom have had diaper pails sitting around, changed their kids on all the furniture, many including the kitchen table, and worry about germs. To each their own I guess!

While you're "still looking" for the matching lid, I would gently suggest a new toilet. Their cost for the materials, but you'll install for free. Otherwise, you just keep looking.

Wow, I knew my local family-owned supplier was a gem; i.e. I needed a new lid for a particular circa 1963 Kohler toilet, in a sort of raspberry sherbet purplish-pink... AND THEY HAD IT! (I'm sure it was a std. developer install in my part of town, in the early 1960s.) Used, but mint. Only $25--reasonable!

But back to the O.P., if you're a licensed pro, time is money... and it's also CUSTOMER SATISFACTION/PERCEPTION.

Stop shopping. Stick to flooring. Give customer a new toilet, acceptable to them, slightly higher grade than the old one, write off the minor loss on your taxes. Horse trade the old toilet to the plumber who does the swap, and, being in the biz, I'm sure Mr. Plumber will eventually find a lid... bone is a pretty common color.

PS: Your conscientiousness is commendable, and if a toilet lid is the most incidental damage you've ever caused gutting floors, you're at the head of the pack! Get the floor done, get paid. Quick perusal shows most Mansfield commodes are under $100.

Smile, fess up, make it right, move on to the next job. Besides, everyone likes a new updated toilet to go with their new floor. ("Great news! You're getting an up to date NEW toilet, ON THE HOUSE!") Is the old one low-flush? Might be a REBATE for the new one. ;')

PLUS, you'll get a GREAT recommendation if handled seamlessly.

Found a tank lid! Came across a site called Cheaptoilettanklids.com. No kidding!

I was all ready to purchase a new toilet, and tried one last Google. It's on the way. Thanks everyone for your help.

WOW, $50+shipping&fondling... makes me feel even better 'bout my $25 cash & carry. Dittoes on the Habitat REstores--all kinds of surprises in there.

OTOH, I can't blame Cheaptoilettanklids.com, they DO have to stock an inventory that requires a lot of space (though no climate control, lol), and more importantly, they come through with an obscure item that SAVES YOU THE COST AND *LABOR* of swapping out toilets. (Let's face it, that flange can be anywhere from pristine to nightmare!)

Niche biz indeed! Kudos to them. Doubt they're getting rich, but I'd be curious to know how they ACQUIRE their inventory...?
