Our Hens' Annoying New Habit! Help!
Comments (12)Birds instinctively want to 'go up high' to roost. Make your swingset less attractive for a few weeks by placing scary things like a plastic tarp or an umbrella or two over it just before dusk. Something that will frighten them off or will fall down if they try and jump up on it. Be ready for loads of chicken-y grumbling. Break the swingset roosting habit and make the coop the most desirable place to sleep. :) You can also start a nightly ritual of offering little goodies to eat each night--but ONLY in the coop. Develop a special 'goodie call' such as the old standby, 'chick-chick-chick' and call it when you are handing out goodies. They'll quickly learn what it means. Anyone who doesn't get off the swingset and get their butts into the coop misses out. Chickens are VERY food motivated, and when they see the other girls getting something they are not, they'll come running. I have two hens that persist in roosting in the nectarine tree right at dusk. One is a WCB Polish hen who positions herself so that she can watch the sunset. I think she's just feeding her little chicken soul, because if we don't go out and 'pick the nectarines' before it gets full dark, she'll jump down and go roost in the coop. I have another little tiny banty hen who has learned to jump up and roost across one of the crosspiece 2x4s in the coop. She's so little that she gets pecked and bullied on the normal roosts, so she's gotten clever and sleeps by herself in this tiny little space. :) Velvet ~:>...See Morepop up electrical outlet for kitchen island
Comments (9)Wow. The guys on that inspectors forum seem to take great joy in finding interpretations making something illegal. So you might have some trouble getting it past your local inspector and would need to ask beforehand. It looks to me like it should meet the intent if you had enough of them to match the standard fixed receptacle requirement, and if the UL testing covered the specific type of installation. I don't see why they are comparing this to an extension cord from another room. If the UL testing covered the flexible cord as part of the device, I see no added hazard. You aren't going to overload it, walk on it, or trip over it. Some of them even seemed to be ok with the safety of the cord, but wouldn't count it as meeting the requirement for a kitchen counter. Seems to me if you have the required number always available for use, how it is connected is unimportant....See MoreMost Annoying Husband...
Comments (63)He follows me around like a little goat. I mean literally one or two steps behind me. While I am cooking dinner, going back and forth from the stove to fridge (maybe what, four feet?) he will walk back and forth WITH me, talking all the while. Which of course means I have to walk AROUND him each time, because he is in my way. If we are shopping, and I take two steps over to get something, he will turn the cart around to follow me. Drives me INSANE. DD is the same way, I can't be more than two or three feet away from her at all times. He can't find anything either, especially if it is not exactly where he expects it to be. If I put the salt shaker back four inches over from where I got it, then it has disappeared forever as far as he is concerned. Anything on the door of the fridge ceases to exist as well. It's like a rip in the time space continuum or something. I have said more than once "Are you sure you want me to look for it? Because if I come up there and find it right away, you are in deep trouble!". He usually opts to look around some more (because he knows I will find it right away). But in the end he gives up. I say he has a "broken looker". DD inherited it from him, and she is a girl so it cannot be attached to the Y chromosome, even though most of us suspect it is, since it is usually men that have the problem ;). Comments (22)In addition to being pretty, it's functional. The DW and clean-up sink are on their own, close to the DR, and the fridge is close to the DR on the other side. Which means that one doesn't need to walk too far into the kitchen to return dirty dishes, or to access the fridge. And the cooktop is in a spot that's protected from through traffic, as is the oven. If you prefer the peninsula, zsmith has a great plan, maybe better than the one I posted, since you wouldn't need to cut back the corner. Sink and DW are deeper into the kitchen, but under a window, which is traditional, and what most people expect. And I like that you can plate from the cooktop and serve on the peninsula. I'd move the cooktop toward the window wall, and consider a small prep sink on the end of the peninsula, if you plan to have help in the kitchen....See Morermlanza
