6" should be enough for all spice jars and condiments; it will limit some of the larger oil and vinegar bottle options. Recommend that you measure all the things you currently have in your kitchen (current inventory is usually best predictor of future inventory) that you might want to ever put in these pullouts and see how many things don't fit and whether or not they are frequent or infrequent use items. If you come up with a significant number of frequent use items that don't fit, upgrade, if not - save the money and space. This is what helped me make my decision. Hope it helps.

I think it depends on a couple of things:

(1) Are your cabinets framed, frameless, or inset?
and
(2) Are the pullouts "filler pullouts" or actual cabinets?

This is my take on it....

If you have framed or inset cabinets, filler pullouts have the same OR more room, width-wise than the same size and bigger cabinets. With framed cabinets, you are constrained by the actual size of the cabinet opening.

E.g., if you have cabinets w/1-1/2" face frames around the opening, then a 6" cabinet will only have a 3" opening and the pullout will need to be The 9" cabinet pullout from Rev-A-Shelf has a pullout width of 5". However, Rev-A-Shelf's 6" filler pullout's width is 6" and is designed for a 6" opening...b/c it's mounted b/w two cabinets and there are no face frames and cabinet walls to reduce the opening size.

In another thread (see link below), Alku05 measured her 3" filler pullouts and determined that bottles up to a 2-1/4" diameter fit, so the opening b/w the shelf railings is probably 2-1/4". That means, I think, that the railings take up approximately 3/8" on each side.

So, a 6" filler pullout would most likely have a 5-1/4" [(2-1/4" + 3") OR (6" - 6/8") = 5-1/4"] distance b/w the rails. Now, the pullout for the 9" cabinet is 5" wide and if you account for the 3/8" railing on each side, that leaves 4-1/4" b/w the railings in the 9" cabinet.

If my analysis is correct, then the 6" filler pullout has 1/2" more usable space than the 9" cabinet. Again, this is for framed or inset cabinets. However, even with frameless cabinets, you have to account for the cabinet walls. If they're 3/4", then you will still lose 1-1/2" of opening width.

What am I saying? I'm saying that if you have between 6" & 9" to work with, I would get the filler pullouts rather than cabinets. Base filler pullouts (at Rev-A-Shelf) come in 3", 6", and 9"

I may have over-analyzed this, but that's a byproduct of my occupation. :-) However, it came in very handy when I went through something similar and it helped me realize that even if I'm forced to reduce my two 9" cabinets to 6" each, I will not lose cabinet space. HTH!

Wow - that was a lot of analysis :) I feel like I just asked my husband who is an engineer :) Everything must be analyzed. I prefer to "feel" lol

We have frameless cabinets and it is 2 little metal shelves with rails on the sides - they are 5" wide on the inside, give or take (measured by me, not an engineer! I'm not allowed to measure any more. Design, yes. Measure no...haha)

Engineer~LOL~ I'm not an engineer (thought about it), but definitely scientifically inclined...which makes me prone to "analyzing" everything. I've been in IT (computers) for...well, let's just say since they used punch cards...so analyzing everything I do comes naturally! Pullout...I would consider getting a 9" filler pullout to give you > 8" of usable width.

Can you put filler pullouts right next to a range? I'm pertty sure they need to be supported on both sides.

If you need to go with cabinet pullouts do NOT get 6" cabinets! We have a 6" base cabinet that was supposed to have a pullout in it. Stupid cabinet guy messed up and ordered a regular cabinet instead. They noticed the problem when the cabinet came and told us "No problem, well install the cabinet and add in the pullout when it comes in." Turns out the company's pullout can't be installed after the cabinet is intalled, and there is only ONE aftermarket pullout that will fit in a 6" cabinet and it costs $300+. Neither GC or cabinet guy would pay for it b/c of the price and because we "only paid for a regular cabinet, and that's what we got" even though we were clear throughout the planning process that it was supposed to be a pullout. Anyway, my point is that there are many pullouts to choose from for 9" cabinets and almost none for 6" cabinets.

So, for frameless cabinets, is there an advantage to getting fillers rather than cabinets? Any downside to fillers, as opposed to cabinets?

With my KM 9" framed cab pullout, the usable space inside the inner tray is 4 1/4" wide...

Alku's right...I was thinking of a cooktop rather than range. Filler pullouts cannot be mounted next to a range/stove (or DW, for that matter) b/c the pullouts need cabinet walls on each side to be attached to. In your case, I think I'd rather go the 9" cabinet route.

For others who don't have a choice, you might consider seeing if you could install a 3/4" "wall" adjacent to the range (or DW), there would need to be a way to secure it (to back wall + countertop + floor?). If so, you could go ahead and install a filler pullout (6" + 3/4" space would be needed for wall + pullout) and, after it's installed, secure the "wall".

Helou, for frameless cabinets, you still lose the space that the cabinet walls take up...up to 1-1/2" (for 3/4" cabinet walls). So, filler pullouts may also be better for frameless.
