Good thread on Poly vs. PVC. When I first installed my water lines I considered poly, but figured it to be a 2nd class solution as it was cheaper... Now 22 years later I'm having underground leaks from the 1' sched_40 PVC breaking. This is in the Pacific NW, not real cold but very occational quakes. The problems don't seem to corellate with quakes though... When doing mods/repairs, found the PVC has become brittle as compared with when it was new. I guessed at the time the glued and threaded fittings to be more reliable with PVC, but are the really? I'm ready to replace the 22 year old PVC. The ease of installation of black poly would be great as I too have rocks/stumps to go around. BUT BUT BUT can't help be suspicius of those brass barbed fitting held only in place with a SS hose clamp. Are there any tips/tricks to installing the larger (~1'+) black poly to make the connections as reliable as PVC or make the job go easier? Any situations to avoid with black poly? I have had to do this a few times and use one of those PVC cutters from Home Depot or Lowes (about $10). It is worth the money over the long haul because of the ease and cleanliness of the cut. You don't have to sandpaper the burrs off. Also, when I do what you are going to do, I dig out and expose the pipe about 3-5 ft. on each side of the cut so that the pipe is exposed. Then, you can lift it enough to get a "T" in there. When it springs back, it will not let go under water pressure (and glue). Home Depot has some fittings that can be put in by gluing the top and bottom half on there with PVC glue but I have not tried them yet. The glue is so strong that I guess it would hold but I am too old fashioned to try them yet.

The clothes dryer manufacturers have specifications on the duct work. They want ducting not to exceed a certain length, and they want 4 inch rigid metal ducts. A 4 inch duct has twice the flow capacity of a 3 inch duct. The restriction of a 3 inch duct causes the clothes to take much longer to dry and also stress the fan motor. PVC pipe is known to build up a static charge which causes lint to stick to the surface - thus requiring more frequent cleaning to avoid a possible fire hazard. For long 4 inch metal ducts there are dryer booster fans. The radon people have fans that go into 3 inch PVC pipes that run continuously. What I need is something that will essentially double the flow capacity of the 3 inch PVC pipe while the dryer is running. It can sense the dryer fan pressure or whatever and just ram flow through the pipe and be done at reasonable cost. I just cannot believe that duct manufacturers cannot design and custom build devices like this.

Thanks all, I tried from the bathroom closet: baking soda hairspray peroxide Comet None worked and then I went to the kitchen cabinet and found a brillo pad in the back crevices of the cabinet (I usually don't use them on dishes). The brillo pad took it off with a bit of elbow grease. I got about 90% off and the rest is faint enough that I am very happy!
