We have hooks and heavy 33x66 bath sheets and have not had any problems with them drying - I have found that they don't dry as well on bars because the towels have to be doubled over to fit on the bars if you don't have room for 36" bars. Double bars were even worse IME because there ended up being eight layers of thick fabric in a small area. Two towels on one double hook (Delta Victorian, not one I'd recommend) dry just fine. I live in coastal New Hampshire where it is downright malarial in the warm months and arid in the cold; towels are laundered once a week and we have no problems with funkiness. We do also have the issue of towels not being hung neatly on bars, and I think decorative towels are silly (I am pretty much a failure as a girly-girl!). :-) Here's a picture: One way to evaluate whether towels dry sufficiently on hooks where you live would be to get some of the cheap over-the-door hooks from somewhere like Walmart and give it a shot before installing anything permanent.

Ha, Stinky! My DH is..."slow to change". He does the exact same thing in the exact same order every morning and gets all out of sorts when he is forced to make accommodations. I've only been married 4 years, but I've learned it is much easier to change the environment than try to force change by direction. He just digs in his heels. Example: about 6 months ago I wanted to hire housekeeper. DH said it was unnecessary. I dropped the idea for a few months. I then started talking about how the dog got lonely during the day when we are at work and how nice it would be if someone would come keep her company. And now, we have a housekeeper who walks the dog..! I don't think I'm being sneaky or devious, but now we are both happy. Sometimes a different approach is needed. He may say the same things about me. But anyway, that's a long explanation of why simply telling DH that he is making a mess by wadding up the towels on the bars won't work. So having hooks may be my way around it. Back to topic, though, I was thinking of something like these from RH? Do they look like the towel would stay on well?

at least 1 person here did that - maybe they'll see your question and post a pic. it was just a space left open - instead of putting in a drawer. your cabinet maker should know what hardware is needed to hold it. I'd suppose it needs to be just a bit wider than a paper towel roll is long. and deep enough for the big fat rolls if you use those.

Actually, the Scotts at Wegmans is a much better deal $$-wise since Scott rolls have 1,000 sheets, or twice as many as Feathersoft or Windsoft. However, Scott's are 1-ply while Feathersoft and Windsoft are 2-ply, and personally, I just can't go for the 1-ply TP. So if you were to double up on the Scotts, the equivalent of two-ply, equaling 500 sheets a roll, yes, they come out to about the same, unless you can get a shipping deal on the Feathersoft. The Feathersoft is @$25 case with 96 rolls. making it much less expensive than the Scotts at Wegmans, but yes, the shipping fee is what brings it up.
