PD Novel?

I have the white PDN 7" color ereader. I updated the firmware the last time that I was notified that an update was available, that was some time ago. I was wondering if the "Kindle for Android" download will work on my PDN so that I would be able to take advantage of Pixel Of Ink to obtain free ebooks.

yes sure you can add all kinds of apps including kindle app and nook app.

I doubt that you can do that. Amazon tightly controls its books so they can't easily be read on ebook readers other than Kindles. I have two suggestions.

The best one is to download the free Calibre software to your computer. This is a safe, wonderful program that allows you to download books and then easily convert them from whatever format they are in to the format that works on your device. Once you do the conversion, you can then transfer the converted book to your ereader.

Alternatively, there is a workaround that can sometimes be done on Nook devices to get around the Amazon restrictions. However, I'm not going to vouch for this, so proceed at your own risk. If you want to read about this, go to this web site:

The Calibre approach is likely to be the simplest one. You can view the short video that is on the home page for the site, so you'll know what to expect. It's very simple so it doesn't require significant computer skills. I've used it to convert many free ebooks for use on my Galaxy Tablet.

Thank you. This thread has kept me from the gardening and a possible bee sting. I see many old favorites and more exciting, new authors to try. One of my favorites not listed is Robert Van Gulik, Dutch, world reknown expert on China, son of a diplomat I believe and wrote about Judge Dee in the Tang dynasty. Warning, one book has descriptive scene - 'drawn & quartered' for a mean malevolent being. Was Nevada Barr mentioned? Her lonely ranger, Anna Pigeon, works in the natl. parks. Rarely have physical locales' descriptions stayed with me as strongly. I can still go back to the depths of Lake Superior or the Anasazi cliff dwellings. Perhaps a bit on the dark side.

I had a wonderful trip but with no time to read anything but guide books and maps. I found one book by Norah Lofts, "Knight's Acre", at a secondhand book stall at the market in Norwich, found for me by a very helpful man who searched his entire stock. Will read it soon. We stayed at a 5-star B&B outside Norwich, in a house from 1632 with wisteria on the walls. I didn't know there were such luxurious B&B's and much cheaper than the Holiday Inn we had to stay in for the last two nights. The owner had a degree in literature so the house was full of books. My husband and I always had our breakfast at the table next to the window with a windowsill full of books. I used to read a bit by John Donne, one of my favourite poets, waiting for breakfast while my husband read the local newspaper. We covered most of Norfolk, no time for the rest of East Anglia. We visited gardens and nurseries, cathedrals, the Fens and the Broads. I was happy to hear change ringing outside the church of St. Peter Mancroft. We don't have this kind of bell ringing in Sweden and I have wanted to hear it since I read Dorothy L. Sayers' The Nine Tailors with its lengthy descriptions of the mathematics of change ringing. It was beautiful although not melodious in the conventional way. My husband was as fascinated as I was.

I guess I am oblivious to style when the ideas engage me, because I'm one of those who loved the first couple of Dan Brown's I read (reverse order starting with TDVC.) Janalyn, can we credit Atwood with marrying ideas with style if the ideas have been done to death by other authors? Cindy, I enjoyed reading Picoult's The Pact for my book club, but have felt no need to read her further. How do you see her as beating one over the head with her ideas? I tend to lump her with the current crop of writers who I swear are on assignment from their therapists. They don't realize they can use many literary devices to get their points across without tedious blow by blow accounts of dysfunction. Hmmmm. Maybe that means I only buy into the stories if the ideas are those I like. Btw, I once read a George Elliot (or maybe it was a George Sand, I've tried to wipe it out of my memory) short story in which the entire first page was one sentence. Martin, you are right, it isn't exclusive to science fiction. However, I will use a science fiction example to note that I'll probable endure inadequate writing for the ideas more than I'll endure empty style. I don't like the writing style of Arthur C. Clarke at all, but he did have some fascinating ideas. (ducking for cover now) Does Kate Mosse have any fresh ideas? I thought she was reusing old stories. Anya, I've never gotten around to reading Sturgeon, but you have just moved him up on my list. Venusia, sure you didn't have too high expectations of The Birth of Venus what with your self-identification with the goddess? ;) I would have said that David Mitchell's prose, at least in Cloud Atlas showed a wide repertoire of style. I like your description of "lots of tell as opposed to show." I completely agree; it is one of my pet peeves. Mary, Mitchell's narrative approach was what kept me reading Cloud Atlas. Well, that and the fact that we were discussing it here. Sebald is another writer I want to read. I guess I come down on the side of ideas. I read all of Eco, even though I don't particularly like the writing, or maybe it is the translating in his case.

That's not my understanding, but I know you post a lot of good tech info on computers, so you may be right. I'll be interested to hear back from the OP on whether the direct approach works or not.

Oh sure amazon has had a free app for use on windows computers for a long time, you have to install it on the pc and it is exactly like the kindle, the android app is the same thing but for any Android device. I have the kindle app on all my computers and android devices including the phone.
I know several people here have added it to their laptops and netbooks. Super easy to do.
You can find it on the Amazon site and from amazon app store or the android market.

I agree with your last post. I have Kindle for PC on my computer and Kindle for Android on my tablet, but can these apps be downloaded to the Pandigital Nook color ereader? I was under the impression that the Nook ereader did not have the same kind of download and install capability.

She said she had the pandigital Novel tablet that is what I see, I have one of the white 7" pandigital novels, I am assuming that is what we are talking about? I am not seeing mentioned the Nook?
If it is one of the PDN android tablets it should be able to have the kindle app installed, however it could depend on the version of android on the device as to how to get it.

I have no experience with the Nook ereader.

Thanks for your help. I think I'm going to try Calibre before I download the app to my PDN. I have had some problems in the past when messing with my PDN, it's working perfectly now, so I don't want to rock the boat. If the Calibre doesn't meet my needs I guess I'll have to do the app download. Either way I've learned something from the kind teachers here at the KT.

Mare it should be a very easy install it is not a large app I have never had a problem with putting it on any of mine. You will have to in settings allow app installation from other sources, can't remember the exact phrase but the opens it to be able to go to other sites to get the app like Amazon for instance.

Calibre is a great program to have also.
There is also an online free file changer you download the book in kindle format to the computer go to the site upload it choose the file type you want to change it to, like epub, and it does it for you. Very simple.

Let me know how it goes. I am yet to get the Kindle app to work right on my PD Novel. Kudo, B/N, and some other one work fine, just not the Kindle one.

should you want to do conversions of books you bought you would need to use a tool for that removal of DRM this little tutorial tells how to do that and how to use an online converter. Generally the free books will not have DRM to worry with.

If you have kindle books with the .azw type you can just change that to .mobi and then most of the online changers will work, they are the same file structure.

This converting business is proving to be more complicated than I thought. I didn't have Kindle for PC, so I figured out that I needed that b4 Amazon would let me download the free book by Jana De Leon. So, I downloaded Kindle for PC, then Calibre. I then was able to download the free book from Amazon. When I tried to convert the book using Calibre I was told that it was DRMed. So, now it's my understanding that I need another program to unDRM the book. Is the Epubar DRM remover a safe download? I'm assuming it is or you wouldn't have listed it RC. I'm just checking.
