Craigslist experts - Do you think I could sell this?

I'm thinking of selling me entire bedroom set. I know the dressers would go, no problem. What about my insanely huge headboard? Any thoughts about a price range I should consider? I usually try to get 50% of what I originally paid for an item, but I just have no clue with this piece.

It's very pretty and looks to be in perfect condition -- definitely, put it out there on Craig's List and see what happens! The only reservation that folks might have might be in picking it up. Would the pieces fit in the back of a pickup truck? As for price, I'd really have no idea. Seems like folks go to CL expecting close to garage sale prices, at least in my area. As an option to CL, do you have a consignment store in your area that would take it?

There was a discussion about winter sowing impatiens on the 'mother forum' some time ago, and it was decided that they were 'not worth the bother' for various reasons. However, I had saved some seed of my own and I sowed them last year on March 8 (I am in Zone 4/5 Ottawa). They sprouted and the seedlings were very small, but I planted them out. They bloomed quite late, and the colours were not true (my orange seed produced the most beautiful pale pink bloom). The concensus was: Since impatiens are inexpensive, the blooms from the WS plants are late,and the bloom colour is unpredictable, it may be preferable to buy the plants from a nursery and enjoy the bloom colour you desire. For me, just the joy of sowing it from seed is enough.

I don't think I could do it, move that is. Not after 25 years of turning a nothing yard into flowers and beautiful shrubs. what I would suggest is collecting seeds from all of your annuals that you possibly can. Take cuttings of all perennials that you can and start rooting them now. If you wait any longer to start rooting them or taking root divisions, it will be too late to try and plant them in your new home. Maybe you should wait till next year and start the plans to sell in the spring. That way you will have all your annual seeds and divisions and root cuttings to start in your new home. Of course, you could do what a neighbor of mine just did. She'd lived in her home for over 40 years and moved into an in-law apartment with her son. This elderly woman dug up just about all of her perennials and annuals then end of july and moved them with her to her new home. She had to have had at least 200 plants with her. She did ask the new owners what, if any, plans they had for her gardens. They where kind enough to tell her they where going to demolish 5 of her garden beds to add on to the house and throw out all of the plants.!!!!! That's all she needed to hear, she started digging 3 weeks before they closed on the house. Yes she gave quite a few seeds and plants. No way where they going into the garbage heap.

And they obviously have put some thought into this." they do have debt. they spend about $950 @ month on car and student loan debt. $950 is a lot money for the next several years. in 5 years they will have spent $57,000 in payments plus whatever interest is there. they should have paid those off with their 20% and re-save. in 2-3 years they would have had their 20% again w/o ANY debt. The poster also mentioned that he and his wife would like to have children in the next 2 or 3 years. May I point out that daycare alone is probably way more than $950/month - so that money may already be encumbered. I think the point we fiscal conservatives are making is not that the OP shouldn't buy a house, it's just that the goal of buying or building a dream house may be out of reach in these uncertain economic times. Actually it is often out of reach for one's first house. The OP absolutely has the means and ability to buy a house and he definitely should move forward. But I happen to think the cost is on the high side and may create future stresses (e.g., HAVING to work to meet a mortgage payment versus being able to downshift one's work schedule to meet family needs). My husband and I have a similar gross income as the OP without car or student loans and there is no way I could imagine paying $2600/month for P&I and taxes and insurance and still have enough money to meet our needs. OTOH, we have two children - can I say they are incredibly expensive? We spend about $100 a WEEK on tutoring, music lessons and sports on my daughter alone. While we can look forward to tutoring ending within the next 6 months (and saving $65 a week), it's not an optional item that we can cut.

People love to tell horror stories, Lily, but there are plenty of happy stories you probably haven't heard. Ten years ago my son was selling the occasional piece of ham radio equipment on eBay, and I asked him to list some of his father's chemical engineering books for me. He said no, he wanted me to learn to sell on eBay myself because i would love it. I was resistant, but he was right--all it took was one good sale for me to love it. Like most of us, I just had to get over the hump of that first listing. It seems intimidating, but eBay wants sellers and they make it easy. As for the horror stories, I have none to tell. When you set up a Paypal account they'll ask to access your bank account. It's a simple matter to open a new checking account (usually free) just for Paypal, keeping a low balance on the very slim chance it could get into the wrong hands. Mine never has more than $300 in it. As for Craigslist, it, too, is easy--plus it's free. Scammers love it but they are usually easy to spot. The Craigslist site issues warnings, spelling out what to look for. A scammer is unlikely describe what you're selling by name; instead, they'll mention your "item." A famous scam offers to pay by Cashier's check. You will quickly get a feel for the authentic email from a real buyer. You don't put your contact information in the ad, unless you want to. I never do. Buyers contact me via an anonymous email address, and I decide which ones I want to respond to. Except for the time I sold a piece of equipment too heavy to move, I meet all my buyers away from my home, at public places. Again, I have no horror stories to report. If you've bought at 40 years worth of auctions, I'll bet you have some stuff collectors would love. You could have a blast doing this, Lily. Start by searching for bedroom items on CL -- and check the prices. Prices do seem very low (great for buyers but not for sellers!) -- and I agree with auntjen on that!

It appears to be oak, which is not the preferred wood right now, so that will likely hurt the price.

Is it possible to sell the two end cabinets of the headboard separately? I would think you could sell those as individual pieces that someone could use anywhere.

Seems like it might be possible to somehow work that headboard unit as an entertainment center, too. What is going on where the bed sits - is there a flat piece of wood below, or what?t

Maybe put it out there for a couple of weeks as a set, then break out the pieces if needed and see how that goes. Since there is no cost involved, it doesn't hurt to give it a go!

Jen, that is a good point. It actualy does break down into enough pieces that it would fit in a truck - probably more than one trip, though. I definitely will add that in the description.

I would actually be happy to get around $600 for the bed, and two dressers. The dressers are cool - lots of cedar lined drawers. So much storage space - and it's half empty. We store almost all of of things in the closet.

I was just on our local Craigslist. There was a similar style headboard on there for $250. I couldn't tell the wood. As above posters have said, it doesn't cost anything to try!

I listed it on CL along with an armoire, and it was all sold by that same evening. They didn't even try to reduce the price!

Dismantling the headboard took forever - SO glad to see it go!
OH NO!!!! I never painted behind the head board and the armoire!!! WHAT was I thinking! :)
